Cross-Talk Between The Oxytocin And Vasopressin Systems In The Brian: Roles In Social Behavior, Zhimin Song

Neuroscience Institute Dissertations

Oxytocin (OT) and arginine vasopressin (AVP) are closely related nine amino acid neuropeptides primarily produced in the hypothalamus and released both in the peripheral and central nervous systems. For over 100 years, OT and AVP have been known for their roles in uterine contraction/milk letdown and blood vessel constriction, respectively. Over the past few decades, the roles of OT and AVP in the central nervous system have been extensively investigated in the regulation of a variety of complex social behaviors including sex, parenting, pair bonding, social play, and aggression. High levels of structural similarities exist between OT and AVP and …

Anonymity And Anti-Gay Aggression In An Online Sample: The Effect Of An Audience On Gender Role Enforcement, Bradley Goodnight

Psychology Dissertations

This study tested the hypotheses that 1) authoritarian and traditionally masculine men respond to depictions of male-male intimacy with anger, 2) this anger predicts aggression toward gay men, and 3) anonymity moderates this effect. Data from 978 men were collected from Amazon Mechanical Turk, an online participant pool and survey delivery mechanism. Results from SEM analyses confirmed hypotheses 1 and 2, indicating that traditionally masculine and authoritarian men experience anger in response to a video clip depicting male-male intimacy, b = .22, SE = .08, p < .01, and that this anger predicts greater aggression against a gay male target than a heterosexual target, b = .53, SE = .17, p < .01. The hypothesis that anonymity influences the link between anger and aggression was not supported.

Sex Differences In The Effect Of Prenatal And Perinatal Fluoxetine Exposure On Adult Aggression And Avoidance In The Syrian Hamster, Ryan J. Slaby

Neuroscience Honors Theses

Anti-depressants are commonly used to treat major depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. 17% of women experience major depression during pregnancy, where up to 10% of pregnant women use antidepressants. 20% these women use Prozac (fluoxetine) to treat major depressive symptoms, which crosses the placental barrier and is present in breast milk. Little is known about how exposure to developmental fluoxetine affects adulthood behaviors such as agonistic and submissive behaviors, especially in females. Furthermore, the effects of developmental fluoxetine exposure on aggression and avoidance in Syrian hamsters have not been studied. Therefore, we explored how prenatal and perinatal exposure to fluoxetine …
