Underreported Yet Overcrowded: Negligent Deaths And Prison Overcrowding In The Context Of Missing Prison Data In The United States, Chloe Sellers May 2023

Underreported Yet Overcrowded: Negligent Deaths And Prison Overcrowding In The Context Of Missing Prison Data In The United States, Chloe Sellers

Sociology Theses

With the highest incarceration rate in the world, the inability to provide adequate health care and facilities in United States prisons is paramount, especially given unequal incarceration rates by race. This study analyzes 1998 and 1999 National Prisoner Statistics from the U.S. Department of Justice. Using the context of federal funding incentives and truth-in-sentencing laws, which drastically increased sentence lengths and overcrowding, this study explores the relationship between overcrowding and unnatural deaths among incarcerated populations at the state-level. The inability of United States prisons to address health and safety needs and the overwhelming lack of reporting and preventable deaths among …

Whiteness In Black Spaces: An Extended Case Study Of Historically Black Colleges And Universities, Tiara Giddings

Sociology Theses

Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have been noted for their ability to create an environment that fosters black intellectuality, specifically for students who are systematically excluded from white academic spaces. At a time with heightened racism on college campuses, it is important to examine the purpose and significance of HBCUs in today’s perceived post racial society. Utilizing an extended case method, I explore how students at HBCUs discuss their experiences on campus and the extent to which HBCU students conceptualize race and racial events using the white racial frame and black anti-racists counter frames. Semi-structured interviews reveal a coexistence …

Attitudes Toward Interracial Marriage In The United States Military: Black-White Contrasts, Leanna R. Greenwood

Sociology Theses

In the midst of increasing multiracial identification and diversity in the United States, I examine whether White and Black military veterans hold different attitudes toward interracial marriage than those held by their coethnics in the general population. Using the General Social Survey, I examine the likelihood of military members opposing marriage between a close relative and a partner of a race different from the respondent’s own, and whether their views are significantly different from their non-military coethnic counterparts. I use binary logistic regressions to assess whether opposition toward interracial marriage varies by military status and race. Results indicate that Whites …

Race, Online Health Resources And Their Contribution To Health Disparities, Elizabeth Keck

Sociology Theses

With increasing usage of the Internet for a variety of activities, including health information seeking, there is opportunity for the technology to have a pivotal impact on reducing health disparities. Using a Fundamental Causes framework (Link and Phelan 1997), this thesis explores whether or not Internet usage for health information seeking reduces racial health disparities. Using data from the Pew Research Center this study examined active and passive health information seeking and the impact they have on health outcomes among blacks, whites, and Hispanics. The health conditions included self-rated health, high blood pressure, diabetes, lung disease, and heart disease. The …

Rolling Manhood: How Black And White Men Experience Disability, Alexis A. Bender

Sociology Theses

Sociologists have only recently paid attention to how men experience physical disability. However, current research continues to ignore how different racial groups experience it. The goal of this study was to examine how black and white men experience life with a physical disability. Using qualitative research techniques involving in-depth, face-to-face interviews with 10 black and 10 white men, I focus on how meanings of disability and masculinity shift after a traumatic injury. Using symbolic interactionism and social construction as theoretical frameworks, I examine how these men formed and modified meanings for disability and masculinity through social interactions. I also analyze …
