Please, Read The Comments: Exploring The Racial Dialectic Of Online Racial Discourse, Ifeanyichukwu U. Ukpabi

Sociology Theses

More people than ever before are living significant portions of their social lives online due to advancements in internet technology. Over the last few years, we have begun to see the most public discussions of racism increasingly occur online, to be later embedded in the public’s consciousness. It is therefore important for race critical scholars to observe how digital spaces affect racial discourse in the United States. Utilizing a race critical perspective, I explore comment section reactions to counter-framing articles to examine contemporary racial discourse. Through a discourse analysis, I find that counter-framing articles initiate the racial dialectic by inviting …

A Shift In Gender Representations And Narratives In Super Bowl Commercials, Ashley M. Rockwell Dec 2016

A Shift In Gender Representations And Narratives In Super Bowl Commercials, Ashley M. Rockwell

Sociology Theses

Despite the wide, diverse, and captive Super Bowl television audience, there are only a few studies—none longitudinal—that have examined gender representations in Super Bowl commercials. Scholars have demonstrated that advertisements influence our behaviors and attitudes and can reinforce and reflect dominant ideologies (Garst and Bodenhausen 1997; Kilbourne 1999; Smeesters and Mandel 2006). This study examines how the gender narratives and representations in 665 Super Bowl advertisements that aired between 2005 and 2016 changed over time. Based on this content analysis, gender representations and narratives of Super Bowl commercials shifted to become more egalitarian. While there was a general trajectory toward …

Hegemonic Masculinity In Men With Schizophrenia: Complicity And Strategic Performance, Christopher Vidmar Dec 2016

Hegemonic Masculinity In Men With Schizophrenia: Complicity And Strategic Performance, Christopher Vidmar

Sociology Theses

Using secondary analysis of in-depth interviews of men with schizophrenia (N=59), in this thesis I explore the interplay between the performance of hegemonic masculinity and the treatment career of men with serious mental illness (SMI), and in doing so begin a conversation about how mental health providers can better address issues of masculinity. My findings are that significant barriers to masculinity performance are caused by the diagnosis and treatment of SMI, leading to roll loss, subsequent stress, and strategic modification of masculinity performance to attain hegemonic complicity. I identify six emergent themes and three masculinities within the data, and offer …

Social Support And Mental Health Among Homeless Youth: A Multi-Group Sem Model Of Non-Lgbt*, Lgb, And Trans* Youth In Metro-Atlanta, Morgan Justice Aug 2016

Social Support And Mental Health Among Homeless Youth: A Multi-Group Sem Model Of Non-Lgbt*, Lgb, And Trans* Youth In Metro-Atlanta, Morgan Justice

Sociology Theses

LGBT* youth are over-represented among homeless youth and they face unique circumstances from their non-LGBT* homeless peers, such as increased risks of psychological distress (Fredriksen-Goldsen et al. 2014). Through multi-group, structural equation modeling, I compare the effects of time homeless on mental health outcomes (e.g., psychological distress) as measured by the Kessler 6 (K6) scale mediated by social support across non-LGBT*, LGB, and trans* groups. Findings indicate that social support is a significant mediator between the time a youth is homeless and their mental health outcomes, regardless of LGBT* status. Youth who are homeless six months or longer have worse …

Unequal Beauty: Exploring Classism In The Western Beauty Standard, Leah Kozee Aug 2016

Unequal Beauty: Exploring Classism In The Western Beauty Standard, Leah Kozee

Sociology Theses

The Western beauty standard revolves around three main attributes: thinness, youth, and whiteness. Combined, this ideal corresponds with privilege. Past studies have explored how racism and ageism are embedded in the beauty standard, but little work has explored how classism is included in the Western beauty standard. Utilizing the classical theoretical work of Bourdieu and Simmel, I explore the ways in which the Western beauty standard is dependent upon privilege and cultural capital. Using the methodology of a content analysis, the current study examines four women’s fashion and beauty magazines. I find that the both the language and the imagery …

Should Good Girls Like Bad Sex: Depictions Of Kink In Cosmo, Kiersten Kummerow Brown Aug 2016

Should Good Girls Like Bad Sex: Depictions Of Kink In Cosmo, Kiersten Kummerow Brown

Sociology Theses

Kink has become a more widely discussed sexual practice over time. Recent pop culture releases like the publication of Fifty Shades of Grey have increased this discussion. Cosmopolitan magazine (Cosmo) is one of the most well-known women’s magazines in the world and its sexual advice is one of its defining characteristics. Using both quantitative and qualitative approaches, I examine Cosmo’s depictions of kink from 1996 to 2014. Cosmo was more likely to mention kink in later years than in earlier ones, and its mentions of kink in later years were more likely to be positive. These mentions …

Self-Care Practices Of Populations At Risk For Hiv, Nasim Mahboubi Fluker May 2016

Self-Care Practices Of Populations At Risk For Hiv, Nasim Mahboubi Fluker

Sociology Theses

Studies have shown that health outcomes are disproportionately worse for homeless individuals as compared with individuals with stable housing (Brickner, Scanlan, and Conanan 1986); however, the unique coping mechanisms that they employ to protect their health have been largely understudied. Better understanding of attitudes and behaviors that individuals adopt to maintain their health, collectively termed “self-care” is imperative to the design and implementation of effective public health interventions for this population. The purpose of this thesis is to better understand both the barriers and coping strategies of transient populations. The two research questions guiding this thesis are: What barriers to …

Race, Online Health Resources And Their Contribution To Health Disparities, Elizabeth Keck May 2016

Race, Online Health Resources And Their Contribution To Health Disparities, Elizabeth Keck

Sociology Theses

With increasing usage of the Internet for a variety of activities, including health information seeking, there is opportunity for the technology to have a pivotal impact on reducing health disparities. Using a Fundamental Causes framework (Link and Phelan 1997), this thesis explores whether or not Internet usage for health information seeking reduces racial health disparities. Using data from the Pew Research Center this study examined active and passive health information seeking and the impact they have on health outcomes among blacks, whites, and Hispanics. The health conditions included self-rated health, high blood pressure, diabetes, lung disease, and heart disease. The …

Attitudes Toward Marriage And Long-Term Relationships Across Emerging Adulthood, Kaitlin A. Hippen May 2016

Attitudes Toward Marriage And Long-Term Relationships Across Emerging Adulthood, Kaitlin A. Hippen

Sociology Theses

The current study expands upon existing developmental research on marital attitude change by examining how attitudes toward marriage and long-term relationships may vary across emerging adulthood. Utilizing five waves of data from the Center on Young Adult Health and Development’s College Life Study, discrete-time survival analysis and latent basis growth curve analysis are employed to assess the change—and predictors of such change—in three measures of relationship attitudes (desire for marriage, desire for long-term relationships, and importance of marriage and long-term relationships) of over 900 college students. Results indicate positive change in all three measures of attitudes, with most emerging adults …
