Access And Engagement Of Moodtools, An Mhealth Application For Depression, Langting Su Dec 2020

Access And Engagement Of Moodtools, An Mhealth Application For Depression, Langting Su

Psychology Theses

mHealth (mobile health) serves as a potential solution for circumventing barriers to traditional psychotherapy, but few studies evaluate mHealth technologies available in real-world settings with real-world users. This study evaluated the extent to which MoodTools, a self-help app for depression, circumvents barriers to traditional psychotherapy and engages users. App behavior from 159,00 Android users were assessed. Results showed that MoodTools could circumvent barriers to traditional psychotherapy, as it was downloaded in 198 countries, and the number of users was positively correlated with rates of unmet mental health need in the US. App use during and outside of traditional business hours …

Default Mode Functional Connectivity, Aerobic Exercise, And Depressive Symptoms: A Resting-State Fmri Study, Andrew Gradone Aug 2020

Default Mode Functional Connectivity, Aerobic Exercise, And Depressive Symptoms: A Resting-State Fmri Study, Andrew Gradone

Psychology Theses

Depressive symptoms are common in older adults. Previous studies have shown that aerobic exercise is effective in treating depression and improves brain function. The goal of the current study was to determine the interrelationships between aerobic exercise, default mode network (DMN) functional connectivity, and depressive symptoms in thirty-eight healthy older adults. Results showed that (a) increased connectivity within the DMN and to the sgACC is associated with greater depressive symptoms at baseline, (b) decreases in functional connectivity within the DMN after a 12 week exercise intervention were greater for participants in the aerobic group relative to the control group, and …

Moderating Effect Of Cardiovascular Risk Factors On The Relationships Of Physical Activity With Mood And Cognitive Function In A Diverse Sample, Alexia Minto May 2020

Moderating Effect Of Cardiovascular Risk Factors On The Relationships Of Physical Activity With Mood And Cognitive Function In A Diverse Sample, Alexia Minto

Psychology Theses

This study investigated the effects of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors on the relationships among physical activity (PA), mood and cognition in a diverse sample of middle-aged to older adults. Scores on neuropsychological tests and self-report questionnaires from 62 adults were analyzed. Multiple regression analyses were used to examine the main and interactive effects of PA and CVD risk burden on cognition and mood when controlling for age and race. CVD risk was associated with greater benefits of PA, while higher CVD risk was associated with either no benefit or lower cognitive scores. Results indicate that middle-aged to older adults …

Exploring The Relationships Among Mindfulness, Attention And Interpretation Bias, And Depressive Symptoms In Emerging Adults, Meghan Goyer May 2020

Exploring The Relationships Among Mindfulness, Attention And Interpretation Bias, And Depressive Symptoms In Emerging Adults, Meghan Goyer

Psychology Theses

Theoretical and empirical work suggesting associations between (1) mindfulness and depression and (2) cognitive biases (CBs) and depression lay the groundwork for novel questions about how to model mindfulness, how mindfulness and CBs are linked, how CBs are associated with one another, and how CBs may explain the association between mindfulness and depression. The present study derived a model of mindfulness, from which a structural model was built to explore relationships among factors in the model, including attention bias (AB), interpretation bias (IB), and depressive symptoms in a sample of emerging adults. Findings suggested a bi-factor Exploratory Structural Equation Model …

The Effects Of Repeated Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (Rtms) On The Speeded Identification Of Happy Faces In Depressed Adults, Brian L. Tang Jan 2020

The Effects Of Repeated Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (Rtms) On The Speeded Identification Of Happy Faces In Depressed Adults, Brian L. Tang

Psychology Theses

Anhedonia (defined as the inability to experience pleasure) is a symptom that is difficult to treat in patients with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). Prior research suggests that the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) is a major underlying mechanism in the pathophysiology of depression. Therefore, we investigated whether repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) treatment to the left DLPFC would predict a reduction in one facet of anhedonia symptomatology—namely, reward derived from positive social stimuli (i.e., smiling human faces)—in 26 depressed adults. The results revealed no significant effects of rTMS treatment on either accuracy or speeded reaction time during a novel behavioral …
