Almost nineteen (19) percent of the United States population lives in rural areas according to the 2010 Census. Deficiencies in diversity of skilled labor, business support networks, and consumer demand have resulted in major barriers to economic prosperity in many of these areas. State and local governments commit valuable time and resources to economic development programs to revitalize rural communities. Recent studies have revealed that students are ambivalent about contemplating entrepreneurship as a career, and that only a few anticipate following a career in entrepreneurship after graduation. Moreover, within the start-up industry, the gender gap is still evident. Underpinning economic growth is the emergence of entrepreneurial ventures with the potential to grow that boost job creation and provide new sources of products for mature companies.
