SUMMARY

Hospitals are connected to people's social and economic conditions because they play a vital role in society’s view of wellness and well-being. “Despite a huge dedication of resources to healthcare in the United States, the medical system does not deliver safe, effective, efficient, patient-centered, timely, and equitable care as recommended by the Institute of Medicine (Bush, 2007).” Hospitals' challenges are with maintaining sustainable care …

An Exploratory Study Of The Factors Affecting Hospital Performance: Safety, Clinic Care, Patient Experience, Efficiency And Cost, Shevon Lewis

Business Administration Dissertations

Healthcare systems have interrelated, collaborative, and interdependent elements from the human aspects to facilities geared towards providing people with medical care. This dissertation explores healthcare reform in the context of hospital value-based purchasing programs. Hospital performance is a byproduct of a hospital’s characteristics, demonstrated through organizational behavior—a key driver towards an institution’s overall success and sustainability. Hospital value-based purchasing (VBP) program is a Centers for Medicare & Medicaid services (CMS) initiative that rewards acute-care hospitals with incentivized payments for the quality care provided to Medicare beneficiaries ((HHS), 2017). The program adopts a philosophy of measurement and promotes an appraisal mechanism …

The Future Of The Aicpa Peer Review Program: The Impact Of Age, Henry Okwuchukwu Onwumbiko

Business Administration Dissertations

The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and its state accounting boards across the United States of America are aware of practitioners’ difficulty in recruiting and retaining young and qualified certified public accountants (CPAs), but researchers have not examined the reasons why or the effects or recruitment issues on the peer review program (PRP; aicpa.org, (2019)). Some literature has addressed reasons why college students choose accounting as their major discipline, but no research has ventured to examine the choices community CPAs make on joining the Peer Review Program (PRP).

In this study, I argue that younger CPAs choose whether …

Digital Innovation Towards A Service-Dominant Business: A Clinical Inquiry Into Georgia Pacific's Connected Restroom Initiative, Jung Hwan Kim

Business Administration Dissertations

The rapid and pervasive digitalization of businesses has spawned value creation by changing the nature and structure of products and services. At the same time, organizations have been challenged to cope with dynamic business landscapes as they apply digital technologies to renew their competitive positions. In this context, we aim to explore how organizations develop digital innovation initiatives to transform a traditional product-dominant business towards a service-dominant one and how the initiatives are constituted and entangled within and across the initiative stages. Based on close collaboration with Georgia-Pacific Consumer Products Professional Division (GP PRO), we explore the path trajectory of …

Does Board Connectedness Contribute To Firms Performance During A Financial Crisis?, Rajendra Prasad Gangavarapu Nov 2020

Does Board Connectedness Contribute To Firms Performance During A Financial Crisis?, Rajendra Prasad Gangavarapu

Business Administration Dissertations

This study examines the relationship between board connectedness and future firm performance during the crisis period, and whether performance varies with the firm's age and growth opportunities. This study distinguishes between the effect of various board centrality measures on firm performance during a crisis. We find that board connectedness does help future firm performance during a financial crisis. For all firms, future performance for the highest quintile of connected firms outperforms the lowest quintile by approximately 1% per year on average in the 2008–09 crisis period. The impact of connectedness on firms’ future performance during the crisis period is more …

A Phenomenological Analysis Of Information Security Reporting: A Paradoxical Perspective, Robin L. Moore Nov 2020

A Phenomenological Analysis Of Information Security Reporting: A Paradoxical Perspective, Robin L. Moore

Business Administration Dissertations

Current information security research has focused on security threats, prevention of incidents, and federal regulations for reporting incidents. However, we know little about how the behavior of information security professionals impacts security. Against this backdrop, this dissertation seeks to understand the drivers of tensions that information security professionals encounter in the performance of their job functions, which result in paradoxical tensions while reporting on the security of organizational assets. The findings of this study reveal how information security professionals respond to inherent tensions as they become salient, and how these salient tensions often become paradoxical in nature as they are …

Sustainable Organization Of A Lean Six Sigma Program: A Competing Values Perspective, Marilyn J. Tom Aug 2020

Sustainable Organization Of A Lean Six Sigma Program: A Competing Values Perspective, Marilyn J. Tom

Business Administration Dissertations

Lean Six Sigma has been adopted by tens of thousands of organizations as a process improvement methodology to cut costs, increase efficiencies, and drive shareholder value. However, the majority of organizations fail to reap the benefits intended by the methodology and experience challenges in sustaining the Lean Six Sigma program long-term. Although guidance exists for organizations to successfully implement Lean Six Sigma, there is a dearth of literature on the inner workings of large-scale organizations as they maintain and sustain long-term Lean Six Sigma programs. To address this gap, we provide a retrospective in-depth case study of a Fortune 500 …

Organizational Innovativeness Among Employees In An It Operations Organization: A Self-Determination Theory Perspective, Darrell D. Crull

Business Administration Dissertations

According to research, organizational innovativness is a key component in a firm’s short- and long-term success. How a firm achieves organizational innovativenss is a hotly debated topic. While much of the literature focuses on sales, marketing, and other customer-facing departments, I investigate network administrators and system administrators in the IT operations departments of firms. In this study, I propose several factors that lead to organizational innovativness by focusing on the IT operations department. Self-determination theory (autonomy, competence, and relatedness) and job attitudes (intention to stay, job satisfaction, and organizational commitment) are utilized to determine job performance and organizational innovativness. Motivation …

Factors Affecting The Financial Performance Of Us Children’S Hospitals: An Exploratory Study, Jimmy Mahgoub

Business Administration Dissertations

Financial performance is a key indicator of success and competitive advantage for organizations. This paper presents an exploratory study of factors affecting financial performance of US children’s hospitals using secondary data collected by the American Hospital Association. The dataset included all children’s hospitals in the United States. Prior studies explored factors around financial performance of hospitals in general, but to date, there is no enough literature that focuses on children’s hospitals to explore which factors impact financial performance independently and simultaneously. While many factors may affect financial performance, but this study found that: health care accessibility, number of services offered, …

Career Transitions In The Digital Age: Mastering The Art Of Communicating Career Direction Clarity, Daphne J. Schechter

Business Administration Dissertations

As the nature of work has evolved, the process of career transition and job search has evolved as well. During the world’s transformation from analog to digital, the tenure of an individual’s career went from one person, one company, to one person, many companies. Today, the average person changes jobs 12 times during his or her career. In the digital age, career tools are more ubiquitous, candidates have a broader reach, and communication is instantaneous. Although technology change is generally positive for those in career transition, candidates are expected to articulate clearly what they seek in a position and prepare …

The Role Of Collaborative Governance In Blockchain-Enabled Supply Chains: A Proposed Framework, Denise Mccurdy May 2020

The Role Of Collaborative Governance In Blockchain-Enabled Supply Chains: A Proposed Framework, Denise Mccurdy

Business Administration Dissertations

The blockchain age is dawning. Firms large and small are teaming up with partners and solution providers to deploy blockchain, especially in supply chains, often called the “sleeping giant” use case. But blockchain is still new, and despite early successes in simulated environments, how companies need to collaborate in a blockchain world is unclear.

To help close the blockchain collaboration research gap, this design science study explores the technological and ecosystem business decisions required to deploy an interoperable blockchain solution. The research partially builds a supply chain artifact, and the challenges experienced by the design team prompts further investigation with …

The cold chain third-party logistics (3PLs) industry is comprised of 250 companies in the United States, representing a $5.7 billion dollar market (G. C. C. Alliance, 2019). The cold chain 3PL industry manages the storage of the food products the manufacturers produce and the logistics activities on behalf of the shipper. Currently, it is reported that over 94 billion pounds of food are stored in cold chain 3PL warehouses, with a projected growth to $2 billion dollars of goods and services tracked annually by 2023 (G. Leadership Style And Organizational Structure Alignment: Impact On Innovativeness And Business Performance, Charles Ifedi May 2020

Leadership Style And Organizational Structure Alignment: Impact On Innovativeness And Business Performance, Charles Ifedi

Business Administration Dissertations

Organizations strive to achieve competitive advantage and deliver superior performance by adequately utilizing and coordinating the resources available to them. Employees are a key resource in an organization, but it is the chief executive officer (CEO) in particular, who leads and coordinates all the resources of the organization, that has the most impact on the organization’s fortunes. Even though the CEO may utilize many leadership styles and behaviors, each CEO has an innate or preferred leadership style. Organizations are structured differently, which has an impact on the way their activities are coordinated.

In this paper, I argue that if an …

Factors Influencing Surgeon Adoption Of Technology In The Medical Device Industry, Sean Reynolds May 2020

Factors Influencing Surgeon Adoption Of Technology In The Medical Device Industry, Sean Reynolds

Business Administration Dissertations

The medical device industry can be quite competitive, and companies that succeed tend to provide innovative solutions that are adopted by surgeons for clinical use in surgery. However, successful clinical adoption of technology is often problematic for some companies, and this research aims to determine which behavioral factors influence surgeon adoption of technology in the medical device industry. This empirical investigation uses the Technology Acceptance Model 2 (TAM2) to test the relationships between technology acceptance and variables that impact surgeon behavior. This research examines spine surgeons’ adoption of 3D-printed implants used in surgery, and the results suggest that subjective norms, …

Millennials (Generation Y) are now entering and developing in the job market. This research evaluates available literature from a socialization theory lens to examine the motivations of Generation Y and understand their attitudes toward professional certification compared to baby boomers and Gen X. The world is a dynamic and turbulent place. Organizations of all types regularly face the dual challenge of learning from the emerging realities of their environment and using that knowledge to accurately adapt to remain competitive. Often, the changes required to remain competitive demand a significant and irretrievable strategic investment of resources and changes in the status quo of how the organization will function going forward. Such strategic changes are often communicated …

Identity Work In Career Transition: Lessons For Human Resources Development In The Verification Of Identity In Career Transition, Jennifer Crenshaw

Business Administration Dissertations

Human Resource Development has for the last few decades accepted a career transition process with elements focused on teaching the mechanics of outplacement and onboarding. Execution of this standard career transition process relies on a pedagogical approach. This qualitative study explored the lived experience of Army veterans in career transition through the lens of identity. Identity theory has taught us that identities are reflexive and we edit our identity to create stability in our self-concept. The outcome of this phenomenological study combines the development of new skills, new citizenship behaviors and the individual’s need to adjust their own identity as …

Influence Of Developer Sentiment And Stack Overflow Developers On Open Source Project Success: An Empirical Examination, Johnson Rajakumar

Business Administration Dissertations

The collaborative effort of software developers around the world produces Open Source Software (OSS) products, and most importantly, the source code of the software product is shared publicly. A recent survey of 1300 IT professionals by Black Duck Software showed that the percentage of companies using open source software grew from 42% to 78% between 2010 and 2015. There has been a significant increase in the formation of self-organizing virtual teams to produce open source software products and services. The current literature does not address the factors affecting the success of open source projects through the lens of self-organizing virtual …

Crowdfunding provides a convenient method with which to collect funding from an immense base of investors without geographic boundaries and intermediaries. In recent years, it has become entrenched as a surrogate funding source to traditional external finance for entrepreneurs. This paper offers an exploration of factors that propel crowdfunding ventures from a dataset of 182,216 projects and over $2 billion in funding from the two most common crowdfunding platforms based on rewards, namely, Kickstarter and Indiegogo. While previous studies have identified certain elements that lead to success in crowdfunding campaigns, this study delves into the pivotal success factors influencing funding …
