Exploring The Role Of Work–Family Conflict On Job And Life Satisfaction For Salaried And Self-Employed Males And Females: A Social Role Approach, Anthony Adepoju

Business Administration Dissertations

ABSTRACT

Job satisfaction and life satisfaction have been two of the most researched social constructs for many decades. This study looks into the relationship that exists between job satisfaction, life satisfaction, and work–family conflict among salaried and self-employed male and female employees. It adds to existing literature by using Social Role Theory as a basis for explaining the variation in these relationships among males and females, and also makes the argument that gender is a propelling force in explaining the perceived conflict and its effect on life and job satisfaction. It also adds to existing literature by evaluating the above …

Self-Directed Work Team Transition: Leadership Influence Mediates Self Determination Theory To Describe Variation In Employee Commitment, John Hoffman May 2017

Self-Directed Work Team Transition: Leadership Influence Mediates Self Determination Theory To Describe Variation In Employee Commitment, John Hoffman

Business Administration Dissertations

Self-Directed Work Teams (SDWT) are strategic organization designs based on the belief that the time required to make good decisions decreases when employees are empowered to tap their tacit job knowledge. Because this strategy requires employees to think differently about the way they perform their jobs, the supervisor plays a critical role in SDWT implementations. If leaders fail to adequately manage the challenges associated with the transition to the SDWT structure, employee commitment towards the team and organization at large may suffer, putting the realization of SDWT benefits at risk. To better understand this complicated process, this research describes a …

Demographic Factors As Significant Indicators For Short And Long-Term Investments In Industrialized, Emerging, And Frontier Countries, Rodrigo De León González May 2017

Demographic Factors As Significant Indicators For Short And Long-Term Investments In Industrialized, Emerging, And Frontier Countries, Rodrigo De León González

Business Administration Dissertations

Investment decision making has always been one of the most important fields to explore in business. Even when approaches to decision making vary by time and region, and sometimes are more intuitive than rational, new technologies and a better access to worldwide information encourage business people to make decisions based on systematically obtained information. In the era of information, when we usually have a data surplus more than a lack of it, building new theoretical frameworks that cluster the main factors that investors should consider before making an investment overseas is highly valuable for companies.

This analysis contributes with a …

Gender And Ethnic Diversity In Us Boardrooms: Is The Glass Ceiling Stifling Firm Financial Growth?, Dionne Roberts

Business Administration Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to explore the relationship between diversity within the boards of directors of American companies and firm financial growth. Specifically, this study sought to determine the question of whether a relationship exists between medium-term growth in a firm’s accounting returns and the inclusion of a) minority women, b) ethnic minorities, or c) women on its board of directors. The supporting analysis for this inquiry included an in-depth examination of the five-year growth rates in ROE, ROA, and profit margins of 439 companies between 2011 and 2015. These companies operate across eight industry groups and are …

Women In Entrepreneurship And Corporate Business: A Qualitative Study Of First Generation Businesswomen, Margaret Mcalister May 2017

Women In Entrepreneurship And Corporate Business: A Qualitative Study Of First Generation Businesswomen, Margaret Mcalister

Business Administration Dissertations

Recent studies have revealed that students are ambivalent about contemplating entrepreneurship as a career, and that only a few anticipate following a career in entrepreneurship after graduation. Moreover, within the start-up industry, the gender gap is still evident. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore how and why women choose to pursue a career in either entrepreneurship or the corporate world, through the framing theory of Eagly’s Social Role Theory of Gender Difference. The researcher explored this phenomenon through a qualitative research method and a multiple case study design. The target population for this study was composed …

Local Bias Among U.S.-Based Hedge Funds, Mikhail Stukalo May 2017

Local Bias Among U.S.-Based Hedge Funds, Mikhail Stukalo

Business Administration Dissertations

I examine local bias in hedge fund portfolio selection, using Section 13-F original and confidential holding filings. Using Coval and Moskowitz (1999) measure, I find that local bias is present among U.S.-based hedge funds. The holdings of funds are on average 20-67 km closer to hedge funds than the market. I also find that size and leverage of a company serve as determinants of local bias, with the preference of hedge funds for smaller and more levered local companies. I suggest an alternative model for assessment of local bias that yields results further supporting the hypothesis of the existence of …

Sharing The Love: The Mediating Role Of The Partner In The Employment Relationship, Kathleen Stone May 2017

Sharing The Love: The Mediating Role Of The Partner In The Employment Relationship, Kathleen Stone

Business Administration Dissertations

Employee benefits are a pivotal part of the exchange between employer and employee (Lucero & Allen, 1994). The average cost of an employee benefits program is about one-third of an employee’s base salary ("Employer Costs for Employee Compensation Summary," 2016). Because a major goal of benefits programs is to maximize employee retention, human resources departments have evolved their benefits packages as preferences in the workplace change, for example offering employees more flexibility, giving employees time to serve their community and providing them with wellness incentives (Ko & SeungUk, 2014). While the employee is the primary beneficiary of company-provided benefits, additional …

The Influence Of Perceived Csr Engagement On Millennial Employee Turnover Intentions, Joey Helton May 2017

The Influence Of Perceived Csr Engagement On Millennial Employee Turnover Intentions, Joey Helton

Business Administration Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between perceived CSR and employee turnover intentions among workers, and to examine relationships between specific dimensions of perceived CSR and turnover intentions. It was also the purpose of this study to examine the mediating effects of person-organization fit and the moderating effects of employee generation on perceived CSR-turnover intentions relationships. Both descriptive statistics and inferential statistics were used in this study. Descriptive statistics helped to understand the demographic information and the characteristics of the study variables. Based on the inferential statistics, when controlling for the gender and organizational characteristics, CSR …

Relationship Of Proactive Personality, Financial Planning Behavior And Life Satisfaction, Lisa Smith May 2017

Relationship Of Proactive Personality, Financial Planning Behavior And Life Satisfaction, Lisa Smith

Business Administration Dissertations

The present study examines relationships among differences in personality, financial planning behaviors, and retirement life satisfaction. The hypothesized sequence of relationships is: PersonalityàFinancial Planning BehavioràRetirement Life Satisfaction. The study adds to prior research by clarifying the hypothesized role that proactive personality (as opposed to other personality variables such as the Big Five) has as a predictor, and also by showing how differences in discrete types of financial planning behavior influence retirement life satisfaction and mediate effects of proactive personality on satisfaction. This study tests these linkages while also addressing limitations and ambiguity in prior research regarding these potentially important effects …

The Role Of Leadership In Adoption Of Waste-To-Energy (Wte) In Nigeria, Jahan Moghadam

Business Administration Dissertations

The use of Renewable Energy (RE) has considerably increased in the last several years. Innovative forms of sustainable alternative energy production, such as solar and wind, have now become recognized energy sources. Following suit, this paper has reviewed Waste-to-Energy (WtE), an innovative and evolving form of RE, and its possible adoption in Nigeria to address both the energy crisis and the pollution problem. The theoretical framework of this paper utilizes the genesis of Fishbein and Ajzen’s (1975) theory of reasoned action (TRA), expanding on renewable energy studies using TRA such as Bang, Ellinger, Hadimarcou, and Traichal (2000) Mishra, Akman, & …

The Simultaneous Pursuit Of Exploitation And Exploration In A Small Owner-Managed Service Firm, Dawn Wade Apr 2017

The Simultaneous Pursuit Of Exploitation And Exploration In A Small Owner-Managed Service Firm, Dawn Wade

Business Administration Dissertations

Small owner-managed service firms must have the ability to create thoughtful and intriguing ideas to satisfy the needs of their clients. These firms use a diversified operating model which requires each project to be unique, which in turn requires an innovative strategy that is difficult to maintain. These firms need to exploit their current base by being creative and making each solution better than the last while also creating strategies to attract new clients. To satisfy both needs, service firms wanting both incremental and radical change must be able to simultaneously seek out new solutions. This type of dual approach …

Advisory Firm Employee Ownership And Performance In Separately Managed Accounts, Samuel W. Yates Apr 2017

Advisory Firm Employee Ownership And Performance In Separately Managed Accounts, Samuel W. Yates

Business Administration Dissertations

I describe in detail the structure of separately managed accounts (SMAs) and how those accounts compare to and differ from mutual funds and hedge funds. I then examine how employee ownership of advisory firms — that is, firms in which employees have partnership or stock interests — affects the performance, idiosyncratic risk, and R-square of each firm’s SMA portfolios. In testing 14,484 different portfolios from more than 1,100 different advisory firms from 1995 to 2015, I find that SMAs at firms with employee ownership outperform SMAs at firms without it. The greatest impact is in the 25–50% employee-ownership range. Positive …

The Effects Of An Employment Tax Enforcement Regime On Us Small Business And Proprietor Payment Compliance, Rafael Dacal Mar 2017

The Effects Of An Employment Tax Enforcement Regime On Us Small Business And Proprietor Payment Compliance, Rafael Dacal

Business Administration Dissertations

This study attempted to identify ways to improve voluntary compliance and minimize taxpayer burden, but also tries to understand the behavior of taxpayers’ compliance given the compliance regimen. Most explicitly, it attempted to identify ways to improve payment compliance using regimens already utilized in other parts of the tax code. The research question was whether different tax regimes, such as safe harbor, can change the behavior of employment tax payment for small business or self-employed taxpayers. The idea was to determine if a safe harbor provision can reduce the proclivity of authorized individuals to implement a payroll tax dilemma strategy …
