Development And Evaluation Of Blind Spot Detection Safety System Based On 2d-Lidar Technology As An Optimization For Adas Systems, Timothy J. Sutton
Development And Evaluation Of Blind Spot Detection Safety System Based On 2d-Lidar Technology As An Optimization For Adas Systems, Timothy J. Sutton
Honors College Theses
Distracted driving poses a significant safety hazard and will only exacerbate as the number of modern-day distractions increases. To mitigate this problem, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) features, such as blind spot detection, have been pivotal for the safer operation of vehicles. Towards the same objective, the goal of this research is to utilize 2D LiDAR sensors to create a blind spot detection system that will detect objects and surfaces that are outside of the driver’s field of view. A comparative analysis was conducted by developing a 2D LiDAR-based system utilizing NVIDIA Jetson Orion Nano and Python alongside an ultrasonic-based …
A Philosophical Look Into The Morality And Legality Of Abortion, Alexis J. Agnew
A Philosophical Look Into The Morality And Legality Of Abortion, Alexis J. Agnew
Honors College Theses
In his Nicomachean Ethics, Greek philosopher Aristotle posits an understanding of ethics and how human life is characterized by the “good.” Aristotle argues that (I) ethics involve humans possessing a rational capacity and specific function; (II) ethics are habitual, and the “doctrine of the mean” is used to gauge proper action; and (III) justice is linked to virtue. A moral issue that can be analyzed through Aristotle’s Ethics, as well as works of contemporary philosophers, is abortion. Abortion has been a controversial topic and has been brought before the Supreme Court to determine its morality and legality. Using …

Teaching Employment Skills To Carla Within Inclusive Postsecondary Education, Kelly R. Kelley, Kelly A. Clark, Larry Fisher
Teaching Employment Skills To Carla Within Inclusive Postsecondary Education, Kelly R. Kelley, Kelly A. Clark, Larry Fisher
The Journal of Case Learning and Exceptional Learners
The purpose of this intervention-based case study is to provide an overview of an intervention aimed at improving employment skills for Carla, a 22-year-old female with intellectual disability enrolled in an inclusive postsecondary education program (IPSE). One specific aim of the IPSE is to prepare graduates for competitive integrated employment and inclusive community opportunities. Data has consistently indicated that individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) experience poorer employment outcomes compared to their peers without disabilities (Lipscomb et al., 2017) and one barrier to employment for individuals with IDD include lack of soft skills. One intervention that has been developed …

Maturing Manga: An Analysis Of Adult Themes In Shōnen Manga, Audrey Leahy
Honors College Theses
Manga is a Japanese form of visual storytelling comparable to comic books and graphic novels that has seen a significant increase in popularity abroad in the twenty-first century. In Japan, manga is published in magazines intended for particular target audiences. The two most prominent of these are shōnen, manga for young men, and seinen, manga for adult men. This paper examines these demographics and explores the growing similarities between these two demographics. The research compares the adult content and themes of manga in both shōnen and seinen manga. The series Dorohedoro and Chainsaw Man were analyzed both quantitatively for amounts …
The Effect Of A Gratitude Intervention On Acute Pain Toleration, Cynthia Ware
The Effect Of A Gratitude Intervention On Acute Pain Toleration, Cynthia Ware
Honors College Theses
Gratitude interventions are emerging as a method to improve physical health outcomes; however, gratitude’s effect on pain perception and the autonomic response is understudied. Recent research suggests the perigenual anterior cingulate cortex is activated in gratitude interventions and is also involved in the perception of pain and the activation of the sympathetic nervous system. In this study, we investigated the effect of state gratitude induction on pain through the use of the cold pressor method. We found that although there were no significant differences in self-reported unpleasantness, participants in the gratitude condition reported a higher intensity of pain. Nevertheless, participants …
Between Censure And Liberalization: The Press And Publishing In Second Empire France, Oana M. Iancau
Between Censure And Liberalization: The Press And Publishing In Second Empire France, Oana M. Iancau
Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History
Napoleon III's ambition to construct a paradoxical liberal empire encountered a major obstacle in the realm of the press, which chafed under censure and forced the Emperor to consider the ramifications that absolutism would have for his reign, given France's revolutionary history. The article traces the history of censure under the Second Empire, to identify Napoleon III's motivations for liberalization and its consequences for his regime.

Toward Modernization: Using Strategic Development To Address Deficits In The Juvenile Justice System, David A. Mcleod, Emily A. Roberts
Toward Modernization: Using Strategic Development To Address Deficits In The Juvenile Justice System, David A. Mcleod, Emily A. Roberts
National Youth Advocacy and Resilience Journal
The Juvenile Justice System was established on the premise of rehabilitative action for behaviors that have led youth to the criminal justice system. However, the system has increasingly moved away from this original concept toward a punitive model. The authors present how this movement resulted in the devolution of human rights for the youth involved, a decrease in public safety, and a radical departure from fiscal responsibility related to the theoretical origins of rehabilitation. Studies on topics ranging from costs of correctional centers to trauma experienced by youth in these systems, along with many others, are compared to identify specific …
Desistance As A Signal Of Rehabilitation: Understanding Public Perception And The Moderating Role Of Redeemability, Jasmyn Stevens
Desistance As A Signal Of Rehabilitation: Understanding Public Perception And The Moderating Role Of Redeemability, Jasmyn Stevens
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The criminal offender label is enduring and comes with significant real-world consequences. While there is a wealth of literature on offender rehabilitation, less emphasis has been placed on the varying ways that individuals define this concept. The goal of this study is to understand how variations in both punitiveness and rehabilitative definitions affect general beliefs about desistance from crime. Additionally, belief in redeemability is examined as a moderator of this relationship. Using data from an anonymous, national-level, opt-in survey collected through Amazon’s Mechanical Turk (MTurk) platform, I test three hypotheses using logistic regression. Results indicate that while increased punitiveness is …
Campus Safety Data Gathering, Classification, And Ranking Based On Clery-Act Reports, Walaa F. Abo Elenin
Campus Safety Data Gathering, Classification, And Ranking Based On Clery-Act Reports, Walaa F. Abo Elenin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Most existing campus safety rankings are based on criminal incident history with minimal or no consideration of campus security conditions and standard safety measures. Campus safety information published by universities/colleges is usually conceptual/qualitative and not quantitative and are based-on criminal records of these campuses. Thus, no explicit and trusted ranking method for these campuses considers the level of compliance with the standard safety measures. A quantitative safety measure is important to compare different campuses easily and to learn about specific campus safety conditions.
In this thesis, we utilize Clery-Act reports of campuses to automatically analyze their safety conditions and generate …

Effect Of Training Modality On Intention To Exercise Among Law Enforcement Cadets Post Academy, Nicholas Hunt
Effect Of Training Modality On Intention To Exercise Among Law Enforcement Cadets Post Academy, Nicholas Hunt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Police academies are typically the first formalized job-task-oriented exercise training for law enforcement officers (LEOs). Research has demonstrated that cadets are at higher risk of injury during the academy. Physical training (PT) is a critical component of LEO academy efforts to build occupational skills to meet job demands. Although research is beginning to investigate the efficacy of different training modalities, more research is needed to understand the impact of academy training load and modality on occupational readiness and interest in maintaining exercise behaviors post-academy. PURPOSE: to investigate the relationships between different physical training modalities and intention to continue physical training …

Emergency Preparedness And Response: Examining Rural Hospitals (Rhs) Communication Systems Before, During, And After A Natural Disaster, Geremy D. Lloyd
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: Rural Hospitals (RHs) have distinctive characteristics that constitute unparalleled challenges. One of those challenges is the ability to communicate effectively in a disaster, impacting the various effects on the affected society. Research has shown that effective emergency preparedness and response (EPR) communication is paramount when communicating informed details about emergent events. Despite the evolving complexities of communication and the technology associated with disaster communication, very few studies have successfully investigated RHs communication systems before, during, and after a natural disaster. The purpose of this study was to examine and assess RHs communication systems and to highlight the strengths, identify …
