The Inclusion Of Queer History In School Curriculum And Its Influence On Students’ Wellbeing, Maia Stephens

This study used a mixed methods approach to help determine how individuals worldwide recall their history curriculum. The inclusion, if any, of queer historical figures was discussed. The study’s aim was to discover any connection between the inclusion of queer historical figures and a potential increase to all students' well-being and academic growth. The study employed an initial survey as well as follow-up interviews to determine the participants' education, experiences, and views of themselves at the time. The study concluded that the lack of inclusion of queer curriculum had a negative effect on students wellbeing and the potential inclusion of …

Historians of the Civil Rights Movement in Georgia have primarily focused on how the national movement unfolded in the city of Atlanta. More recent scholarship has highlighted the role Martin Luther King Jr. played in Albany; however, many of these analyses focus on figures within the larger movement rather than focusing on local, grassroots organizers. Additionally, their primary focus tends to be on the role of Black men, leaving behind the voices of Black women who led alongside them. The Jared A. Fogel collection is comprised of eighty-five historic photographs ranging from 1860-1960. The photographs depict primarily queer men using figurative body language to indicate their sexuality. The first thirty-one photographs have descriptions provided by original collector, Patrick Hobgood.

Reframing The Role Of Renaissance Women: Anne Boleyn As A Humanist, Kara E. Guthrie

Recent work by historians like Sarah Ross (The Birth of Feminism: Women as Intellectuals in Renaissance Italy and England, 2008) reframes the role of gender in the Renaissance. Humanism, as well as reformist ideas about the church, spread widely across Europe during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries among learned women. In England, these changes are still usually associated with men like Sir Thomas More or Henry VIII himself. Research into Anne Boleyn’s correspondence and library suggests that she directly participated in women’s intellectual circles, playing an important and ignored role at the English court in that regard. Child Naming Practice And Changing Trends In Modern Japan, Noriko Mori-Kolbe

The Coastal Review: An Online Peer-reviewed Journal

Given name is a cultural component that reflects family life. The present study is a literature-based research on newborn baby naming practice in Japan from 1912-2018. Based on existing literatures on naming, examples and surveys on given names, an overview of a naming pattern in Japan is presented and discussed within a sociocultural framework. Historical observations of baby names include popular female and male names and their recent trends. The study also shows that in Japan computerization has changed learning method, information transmission method and communication modes, and that digital natives name their children in different ways than older generations.

Navy recruitment posters from World War II are an important piece of American culture. The iconic signage can be seen in antique stores and textbooks alike. However, these posters provide more than just bold imagery and vintage decor. Por el cielo y más allá invites the reader to reflect upon populist discourses paving the way for discrimination and marginalization; especially those aimed at a different gender, ethnic group, national origin or even an academic sub-specialty. Those who were persecuted in the past are now the ones harassing, and use the ambiguity of words as their tool. Words, in turn, enslave but also help set the others free. The memories of those marginalized are perpetuated through education, letters, poems and songs. They oppose the official discourse and invite the reader to avoid monolithic discourses and embrace tolerance and diversity.

Each year increasing numbers of Mexican-heritage students are served by teachers with little knowledge of the history and diversity of the Mexican American community. This article introduces teachers to Mexican American history and diversity while taking a useful and critical look at children’s picture storybooks regarding Mexican-heritage peoples in the U.S. Ideas in the article regarding how to select, compare and contrast these picture books in the classroom will allow teachers to learn about their Mexican-heritage students, counter prejudices and stereotypes, and more effectively reach out to build academic and personal connections with these students.
