Helping Middle School Students Acknowledge And Navigate Anxiety: An Action Research, Teresa Jones, Amanda Riggs, Nai-Cheng Kuo
Helping Middle School Students Acknowledge And Navigate Anxiety: An Action Research, Teresa Jones, Amanda Riggs, Nai-Cheng Kuo
Current Issues in Middle Level Education
Teachers and school counselors have the responsibility not only to build a positive school climate in which students want to perform and stretch themselves academically and socially, but also to create an environment in which students know that their teachers and school counselors are aware of their needs, anxiety, and other factors preventing them from reaching their potential. In the present study, we used an action research design to help students acknowledge their anxiety and know how to navigate it. The results indicate that most students exhibited lower anxiety before and during the test, while their anxiety level was the …

Redefining “Normal:” Textual And Visual Rhetoric Of Women With Disabilities, Hannah Sincavage
Redefining “Normal:” Textual And Visual Rhetoric Of Women With Disabilities, Hannah Sincavage
Honors College Theses
The field of disability studies holds that disability is a political and cultural identity, not just a medical condition. The rhetoric attached to disabled bodies makes them seem negative, while the rhetoric attached to abled bodies is positive. This negative rhetoric applies to visual rhetoric as well, resulting in disabilities being largely ignored in the fields of advertisement. As they are now finally being incorporated, this brings up certain questions about the issues regarding the exploitation and representation of people with disabilities. The representation of bodies in advertising affects and alters how society considers and perceives the actual bodies that …
Classroom Management Techniques To Improve Efficiency, Confidence, And Positivity, Aaron K. Eubanks
Classroom Management Techniques To Improve Efficiency, Confidence, And Positivity, Aaron K. Eubanks
Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference
The dynamics of the southern rural classroom are extremely diverse, and creating a classroom environment conducive to that can be tricky. Students learn best when they feel confident in the direction of the class and their ability to be successful. This session will provide a guide for teachers to follow when developing and sequencing classroom management strategies in order to improve the learning environment in the classroom. Positive communication strategies can improve the classroom environment, school culture, and also transfer to a positive home environment. The ability to build positive communication skills in students will ultimately lead to their utilization …
Re-Engage Students With “Check And Connect”, Tara Davis, Tony Feldmann
Re-Engage Students With “Check And Connect”, Tara Davis, Tony Feldmann
Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference
One of the most effective dropout prevention programs is Check & Connect. Check and Connect is for K-12 students that show signs of disengagement with school and who are at risk of dropping out. The foundation of Check & Connect (C&C) is building a trusting relationship between the student and a caring mentor. A mentor builds a strong relationship with students, systematically “Checks” on students, “Connects” with students, and partners with parents/families, functioning as a liaison between home and school and striving to build constructive family-school relationships.
Check & Connect is empirically supported through rigorous research and has shown to …

Integrating The Five Practices Of Exemplary Leadership Model Into Entrepreneurship Education, Eduardo R. Díaz, Celsa G. Sánchez-Vélez, Lorena Santana-Serrano
Integrating The Five Practices Of Exemplary Leadership Model Into Entrepreneurship Education, Eduardo R. Díaz, Celsa G. Sánchez-Vélez, Lorena Santana-Serrano
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning
Entrepreneurship educators can assess their students by focusing on leadership self-efficacy dimensions that align with desirable entrepreneurship behaviors. To support this claim, we used the Student Leadership Practices Inventory (S-LPI) to survey a group of 46 undergraduate students in Mexico and 49 undergraduate students in Spain that were involved in entrepreneurship education programs. Independent samples t-tests show statistically significant differences between the two groups. We also compared the whole sample in terms of gender and found no differences. We propose that educators integrate Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership model into de design and assessment of their curricular and co-curricular entrepreneurship …
Students, Universities And Employers: Why We All Win When We Promote Social Justice Through Sotl, Jeannette M. Wade, Anderson Bean, Stephanie Teixeira-Poit
Students, Universities And Employers: Why We All Win When We Promote Social Justice Through Sotl, Jeannette M. Wade, Anderson Bean, Stephanie Teixeira-Poit
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning
This essay discusses the benefits of promoting social justice through the scholarship of teaching and learning. We start by highlighting the prevalence of injustices and discrimination (racism, sexism, homophobia, heteronormativity) experienced on college campuses in the US. We go on to highlight the (1) outcomes associated with social justice centered teaching and learning activities and (2) ways this approach makes students more valuable to potential employers upon graduation. We conclude with a call for campus wide promotion of social justice as both micro (classroom) and macro (university) level interventions are needed to truly create equitable learning spaces.

Students’ Perceptions Of Course Syllabi: The Role Of Syllabi In Motivating Students, Lindsay B. Wheeler, Michael Palmer, Itiya Aneece
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning
In this mixed methods study, researchers explored students’ perceptions of different types of syllabi, the course, and the instructor articulated through the syllabi. Students were randomly assigned to read one of two US History syllabi: a content-focused syllabus (CFS), characterized as a traditional, content-focused, policy-laden syllabus; or a learning-focused syllabus (LFS), characterized by strong learning objectives, authentic assessments, and a positive, motivating tone. Results show that LFS participants (n=61) had significantly more positive perceptions of the document, the course, and the instructor described by the document than CFS participants (n=66). LFS participants found, for example, more of the syllabus components …
Shedding Light On Student Learning Through The Use Of Lightboard Videos, Peter D. Rogers, Diana T. Botnaru
Shedding Light On Student Learning Through The Use Of Lightboard Videos, Peter D. Rogers, Diana T. Botnaru
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning
This mixed-method study examined the effect of Lightboard videos on student learning and perceptions in a Flipped Classroom Model (FCM). The study targeted 68 civil engineering undergraduate students at a 4-year public university in Southeastern USA. Lightboard videos were intentionally alternated between two consecutive semesters. Within the same section of the course, classes without Lightboard videos served as a control group and classes with Lightboard videos served as a study group. Both sections were taught by the same instructor utilizing the same materials and assessments for the class. Student academic performance was measured using in-class assignments. Additional quantitative and qualitative …

Fluid Shift And Fluid Resuscitation In Burn Patients With The Use Of Bio-Electrical Impedance Spectroscopy To Monitor Fluid Levels, Temitope D. Obielodan
Fluid Shift And Fluid Resuscitation In Burn Patients With The Use Of Bio-Electrical Impedance Spectroscopy To Monitor Fluid Levels, Temitope D. Obielodan
Honors College Theses
The purpose of this research is to explore the current methods of fluid resuscitation and other possible methods of measuring the body fluid levels of burn patients in order to fully understand the fluid increase patterns in the torso area. This will be done primarily by focusing on the concept of bio-electrical impedance spectroscopy to measure the fluid levels only in the human torso area. Three similar tests were carried out by measuring the resistance values after ingesting 500ml of water. This was repeated until a total of 1500ml of water was ingested. It was found that the resistance in …
Adolescent Male Behaviors As Portrayed In The Disney Sitcom Hannah Montana, Erin T. Maurer
Adolescent Male Behaviors As Portrayed In The Disney Sitcom Hannah Montana, Erin T. Maurer
Honors College Theses
This research project uses content analysis to examine themes related to toxic masculinity and misogyny in the sitcom Hannah Montana. In particular, the sitcom’s child character Rico Suave is shown to be misogynistic when interacting with women. There is little literature on the topic of representation of toxic masculinity as shown in child characters, but there are many examples in modern media, such as the trope of the child being attracted to the babysitter, the lifeguard, and the friend of an older sibling. Using similarly-formatted transcripts from seasons two, three, and four, I pulled all lines of dialogue and stage …
