All The Beef To The Heels Were In: Advertising And Plenty In Joyce's Ulysses, Mindy Jo Ratcliff Dec 2009

All The Beef To The Heels Were In: Advertising And Plenty In Joyce's Ulysses, Mindy Jo Ratcliff

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Privileging a historicist approach, this document explores the presence of consumer culture, particularly advertising, in James Joyce's seminal modernist novel, Ulysses (1922). It interrogates Joyce's awareness of how a broad upswing in Ireland's post-Famine economy precipitated advertising-intensive consumerism in both rural and urban Ireland. Foci include the late-nineteenth century transition in agriculture from arable farming to cattle-growing (grazier pastoralism), which, spurring economic growth, facilitated the emergence of a strong farmer rural bourgeoisie. The thesis considers how Ulysses inscribes and critiques that relatively affluent coterie's expenditures on domestic cultural tourism, as well as hygiene-related products, whose presence on the Irish scene …

Bias In Closed Population Capture-Recapture, Candace M. Lynn Dec 2009

Bias In Closed Population Capture-Recapture, Candace M. Lynn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Our primary question was the effect of departures from assumptions on population estimates obtained using three maximum likelihood population size estimators: M0 (all individuals have the same capture probability on all occasions), Mb (behavior is affected by prior capture) and Mt (all individuals have the same capture probability that varies by occasion). After examining the initial results and observing substantial negative bias (underestimates), we attempted to model the bias for M0 and Mb capture scenarios as these situations had consistent patterns. The Mt scenario with its erratic behaviors was not modeled. We noted that M0 and Mt performed equally well …

Kernel-Based Interior-Point Algorithms For The Linear Complementarity Problem, Jason N. Brandies Dec 2009

Kernel-Based Interior-Point Algorithms For The Linear Complementarity Problem, Jason N. Brandies

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, we consider the Linear Complementarity Problem (LCP), which is a well-known mathematical problem with many practical applications. The objective of the LCP is to find a certain vector that will satisfy a set of linear inequalities and (non-linear) complementary equation. A kernel-based primal-dual Interior-Point Method (IPM) for solving LCP was introduced and analyzed. The class of kernel functions used in this thesis is a class of so-called eligible kernel functions that are fairly general. We have shown for a positive semi-definite matrix M, that the algorithm is globally convergent and has very good convergence properties. For some …

An Assessment Of Perceived Crop Damage In A Tanzanian Village Impacted By Human-Elephant Conflict And An Investigation Of Deterrent Properties Of African Elephant (Loxodonta Africana) Exudates Using Bioassays, Rebekah R. Karimi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Human-elephant conflict (HEC) is on the rise in East Africa as habitat that was formerly occupied by elephants and other wildlife is being converted to farmland. African elephants (Loxodonta africana) will raid agricultural fields to feed on crops, and many agriculturalists attribute the majority of their crop damage to elephants. The first two objectives of this study were to evaluate the accuracy of this perception by comparing perceived crop damage by elephants and other factors to the actual, quantified crop damage, as well as to evaluate the effectiveness of deterrent methods against wildlife used by local farmers in a Tanzanian …

Intersecting Spaces: A Narrative Exploration Of Intersectionality And African American Female School Psychologists, Natasha Vannoy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The roles of school psychologists practicing within the public school systems are often defined quantitatively. The focus is often how many students are assessed, what assessment measures provide the most useful snapshots of the students and how the psychometric information will be used for educational planning. Moving away from the numerical aspects of the role, this study examines the narrative voices of the few among many. Reflecting upon the shifting demographics within the field of school psychology, as well as the low number of minority school psychologists within the field, I am examining how African American women within the field …

The Persistance Of National Ideology And Myth: Attempting To Re-Define German National Identity In Post-War Europe, Danielle L. Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Germany emerged from post-war Europe economically, politically, and culturally devastated. The process of rebuilding the state meant severing German society from its pre-war roots, changing international and domestic acuity of the German people as violent and racially defined. These postwar leaders, however, were unable to convincingly portray and create a modern nation to shatter the myth of German origins, and accordingly shifted the blame for Germany's situation on Nazi leaders. Absolution of the German people meant denying opportunities for popular self-critique, creating an atmosphere which unwittingly condoned the Romantic national myth. Earlier articulated by the Nazis, this original movement urged …

Effects Of Testosterone And Training On Performance In The Non-Territorial Lizard (Aspidoscelis Sexlineata), Jennifer L. O'Connor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In territorial lizards, testosterone (T) has been suggested as a possible mediator of seasonal increases in endurance and bite force, which are important for maintaining territories and winning male-male competitions. Aspidoscelis sexlineata, a non-territorial lizard, has elevated bite force and endurance during the breeding season when T levels are elevated (Gowan 2008). Here, I investigated the effects of experimentally elevated T levels on bite force and endurance. Tonic-release implants elevated T levels for 2 weeks; however, they failed to increase performance during that time. Endurance decreased for all lizards in the lab study; suggesting that captivity negatively affects endurance. A …
