Heat Dissipation During Hovering And Forward Flight In Hummingbirds, Don Powers, Bret W. Tobalske, J. Keaton Wilson, Keeley R. Corder Dec 2015

Heat Dissipation During Hovering And Forward Flight In Hummingbirds, Don Powers, Bret W. Tobalske, J. Keaton Wilson, Keeley R. Corder

Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science

Flying animals generate large amounts of heat, which must be dissipated to avoid overheating. In birds, heat dissipation is complicated by feathers, which cover most body surfaces and retard heat loss. To understand how birds manage heat budgets during flight, it is critical to know how heat moves from the skin to the external environment. Hummingbirds are instructive because they fly at speeds from 0 to more than 12ms−1, during which they transit from radiative to convective heat loss. We used infrared thermography and particle image velocimetry to test the effects of flight speed on heat loss from specific body …

Leadership Density: An Exploratory Correlational Study Of K-8 Teachers' Balanced Scorecards And Perceptions Of Leadership, Jason David Edwards Dec 2015

Leadership Density: An Exploratory Correlational Study Of K-8 Teachers' Balanced Scorecards And Perceptions Of Leadership, Jason David Edwards

Doctor of Education (EdD)

The purpose of this study was to explore possible correlations between how individual teachers experience leadership density and their balanced scorecard totals. The literature review conceptualizes leadership density at the intersection of leadership theory and healthy school culture. Leadership density is then operationalized to a vetted theoretical framework and corresponding instrument. Existing data was derived from a public lottery-based K-8 charter school. As a balanced feedback mechanism for teachers, the site school employed an annual bonus scorecard calculator. Each teacher’s balanced scorecard included academic growth, supervisor evaluation, and parent surveys.

This research aimed to expand scholarly understandings of how teachers …

The Prophetic Hope Of Emerging Adulthood: Emerging Together Toward An Abundant Life, Adam David Pallay Dec 2015

The Prophetic Hope Of Emerging Adulthood: Emerging Together Toward An Abundant Life, Adam David Pallay

Doctor of Ministry

I am studying hope within Emerging Adulthood in order to bring clarity to the cultural conversations surrounding Millennials and faith so that emerging adults can have the tools to move toward and experience an abundant life. The conversation around Emerging Adulthood is often limited to the Millennial generation. This is problematic because it paints Emerging Adulthood as a rebellious generation rather than a natural stage of human development. Within this generation framework, emerging adults are viewed as needing to be fixed and/or assimilated; therefore, their voices and contributions get minimized until they decide to fall in line with the status …

The United Methodist Church And The Willingness To Embrace Change: Attracting Members Of The Emerging Generation And A Return To Vitality, Jody Glenn Ray Dec 2015

The United Methodist Church And The Willingness To Embrace Change: Attracting Members Of The Emerging Generation And A Return To Vitality, Jody Glenn Ray

Doctor of Ministry

Christian culture within the United States has been experiencing phenomenal change related to shifts in the larger U.S. culture, as well as shifts taking place in the Church. As such, five sets of research questions were presented in this phenomenological study. These consisted of - What is the current state of the Church? Is the Church divided doctrinally, theologically, and in areas regarding polity? If so, what is causing this division? What are the primary causes of the decline in membership currently being experienced by the United Methodist Church? What are the greatest challenges facing the Church? What are the …

Current Concepts Of Muscle And Tendon Adaptation To Strength And Conditioning, Jason Brumitt, Tyler Cuddeford Nov 2015

Current Concepts Of Muscle And Tendon Adaptation To Strength And Conditioning, Jason Brumitt, Tyler Cuddeford

Faculty Publications - College of Physical Therapy

Injuries to the muscle and/or associated tendon(s) are common clinical entities treated by sports physical therapists and other rehabilitation professionals. Therapeutic exercise is a primary treatment modality for muscle and/or tendon injuries; however, the therapeutic exercise strategies should not be applied in a “one-size-fits-all approach”. To optimize an athlete’s rehabilitation or performance, one must be able to construct resistance training programs accounting for the type of injury, the stage of healing, the functional and architectural requirements for the muscle and tendon, and the long-term goals for that patient. The purpose of this clinical commentary is to review the muscular and …

The Genesis Of 'Hungarism': Bishop Ottokár Prohászka And The Extremist Right In 1920s Hungary, Csaba Fazekas Nov 2015

The Genesis Of 'Hungarism': Bishop Ottokár Prohászka And The Extremist Right In 1920s Hungary, Csaba Fazekas

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

Ottokár Prohászka (1858–1927) was a famous and well-known Hungarian Catholic cleric, starting from 1905, when he became bishop of Székesfehérvár. His life and works often got into the center of discussions, not only among historians and ecclesiastical circles, but also among politicians. At the beginning of the 20th century, Prohászka was also extremely popular with liberals, as his activities represented a promise to renew and modernize Catholicism. Prohászka imagined this modernization on the basis of the social principles of Catholicism, and considered the spread of a “Jewish” mentality, alien to the Hungarian nation, as the fundamental problem.

Factors Contributing To Students Seeking An Alternative Secondary School Setting, Brian Crawford

Doctor of Education (EdD)

This is a case study of six students who chose to leave a comprehensive high school that has a reputation for academic excellence. Through a triangulation of data from semi-structured private interviews with the students and their school counselors and the students’ academic records, the details of the students’ experiences at a high school exposed some of the personal factors and school-based factors that influenced their decision to leave. All of these students struggled academically, socially, or emotionally. The major thematic categories for reasons the students left that emerged from the interviews were student mobility, mental illness, socio-economic pressure, academic …

Multi-Dimensional Cross-Confessional Approach To The Study Of Religiosity In Belarus: Need And Conceptualization, Svetlana Karassyova Nov 2015

Multi-Dimensional Cross-Confessional Approach To The Study Of Religiosity In Belarus: Need And Conceptualization, Svetlana Karassyova

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

Construction of a cross-confessional model for studying religiosity is proposed based on a widened definition of religion and its interpretation as a two-part phenomenon including experience (inner part) and a system of presentation of the experience (outer part). The system of religion is understood as a three-dimensional unity of beliefs, activity, and institutions; religiosity as involvement into the system of the named dimensions. Each dimension of involvement is marked with empirical features. Each feature is scaled in a range from formal (outer) involvement to transforming (inner). The combination of involvement into each dimension (set by the features) gives a degree …

Social Emotional Learning In A Guatemalan Preschool Sample: Does Socioeconomic Status Moderate The Effects Of A School-Based Prevention Program?, Leihua Edstrom, Heather A. Mildon, Lesliann Davila, Amanda B. Clinton

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Researchers evaluated the effectiveness of a universal social skills program and compared social emotional knowledge on individual skills interviews with 100 Guatemalan preschool children from resource rich (N = 47) and resource poor (N = 53) backgrounds. Participant ages ranged from 3- to 6-years-old. SEL was evaluated prior and subsequent to receiving a school-based social emotional educational program. Results were analysed in terms of effectiveness of SEL by error type. Data show that preschool children from both poor and wealthy families made significant gains in social-emotional knowledge as a result of SEL instruction. In order to better understand …

Hungary: Amended Church Law Remains At Variance With Osce Standards And The European Convention On Human Rights, Aaron Rhodes, H David Baer Nov 2015

Hungary: Amended Church Law Remains At Variance With Osce Standards And The European Convention On Human Rights, Aaron Rhodes, H David Baer

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

The statement was submitted by FOREF (Forum for Religious Freedom Europe) at the 2015 OSCE Human Dimension Implementation meeting held this past September in Warsaw, Poland. The statement calls attention to continuing concerns with the state of religious freedom in Hungary. As readers of OPREE will most likely recall, Hungary's anti-liberal government, led by Viktor Orbán, introduced a law on the "legal status of churches" in 2011 which, among other things, stripped numerous minority religious groups of legal status. In 2014 the European Court of Human Rights found that, in implementing this new law, Hungary had violated the right of …

Building Self-Efficacy In Peer Relations: Evaluation Of A School-Based Intervention, Shaun Davis Nov 2015

Building Self-Efficacy In Peer Relations: Evaluation Of A School-Based Intervention, Shaun Davis

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

This study employs a longitudinal, cohort-sequential design (Schaie, 1965) to evaluate the effectiveness of Kelso’s Choice (KC), a behavioral intervention program, in 3 cohorts of 3rd and 4th grade students from a rural elementary school over the course of 2 academic years. The study evaluates the impact of KC on development of social self-efficacy, as measured in 2 domains: (a) social self-efficacy, as measured by student reports from the Children’s Self- Efficacy in Peer Interactions (CSPI; Wheeler & Ladd, 1982), the Social Problem Solving Measure (SPSM; Dodge, Bates, & Pettit, 1990) and teacher reports from the Social Competence Scale (SCS; …

Religious Diversity And The Macedonian Model Of Secularism, Aleksandar Spasenovski Nov 2015

Religious Diversity And The Macedonian Model Of Secularism, Aleksandar Spasenovski

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

The geographical position of the Republic of Macedonia continues to shape its religious landscape as dramatically as in the times of Byzantium or communism. Taking into account the aforementioned, this paper will encompass the legal, political and sociological aspects of the Macedonian model of secularism. In this respect, the content of the constitutional provisions suggests that Republic of Macedonia most broadly defines the right to equality, guaranteeing the same rights, independently from the religious determination of its citizens, among other things. The state also guarantees the freedom of religion, allowing its citizens to freely practice their religion either alone or …

Preservice Teachers’ Pictorial Strategies For A Multistep Multiplicative Fraction Problem, Jae M. Baek, Megan H. Wickstrom, Jennifer M. Tobias, Amanda L. Miller, Elif Safak, Nicole Wessman-Enzinger, J. Vince Kirwan Oct 2015

Preservice Teachers’ Pictorial Strategies For A Multistep Multiplicative Fraction Problem, Jae M. Baek, Megan H. Wickstrom, Jennifer M. Tobias, Amanda L. Miller, Elif Safak, Nicole Wessman-Enzinger, J. Vince Kirwan

Faculty Publications - College of Education

Previous research has documented that preservice teachers (PSTs) struggle with under- standing fraction concepts and operations, and misconceptions often stem from their understanding of the referent whole. This study expands research on PSTs’ understanding of wholes by investigating pictorial strategies that 85 PSTs constructed for a multistep fraction task in a multiplicative context. The results show that many PSTs were able to construct valid pictorial strategies, and the strategies were widely diverse with respect to how they made sense of an unknown referent whole of a fraction in multiple steps, how they represented the wholes in their drawings, in which …

The Effects Of Diversity Training On Mental Healthcare Professionals, Andrea Elizabeth Theye Oct 2015

The Effects Of Diversity Training On Mental Healthcare Professionals, Andrea Elizabeth Theye

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Previous research has indicated that the United States is experiencing a rapid growth in its racial and ethnic diversity. Although diversity trainings are common place, many of these trainings do not include outcome measurements to ensure that training goals are met and reactions are favorable. The current study expands the research by evaluating the change in attitude, selfreported culturally competent behavior, and knowledge as a result of the training as well as reactions to the training through the use of pre and post-training measures. Mental healthcare workers (n = 47) completed a pretest, received the diversity training, and then completed …

Teaching At-Risk High School Students Communication Competence Skills Through Facework And Improved Self-Monitoring, Kevin Jones, Jeff Birdsell Oct 2015

Teaching At-Risk High School Students Communication Competence Skills Through Facework And Improved Self-Monitoring, Kevin Jones, Jeff Birdsell

Faculty Publications - Department of Communication and Cinematic Arts

The relationship between communication apprehension and at-risk students has been given a fair amount of attention in academic research. While it has been determined that at-risk students tend to have higher degrees of communication apprehension,1 little research has been done to explore what other communication skills deficiencies at-risk students might possess. Two studies were conducted to assess a group of 29 at-risk student’s communication abilities. In the first study, we compare the students’ competence and communication apprehension to national averages and discover that the students find themselves above average in competence but also more apprehensive about communicating. The second study …

The Warrior Journey: A Hope Enhancement Intervention For Veterans With Combat-Related Ptsd, Wesley H. Fleming Oct 2015

The Warrior Journey: A Hope Enhancement Intervention For Veterans With Combat-Related Ptsd, Wesley H. Fleming

Doctor of Ministry

Veterans with combat-related PTSD often report a loss of hope due to their traumatic experiences. Chaplains and mental health practitioners seek to improve functioning among veterans suffering from mental health disorders, but need common language and methods to work together toward clinically meaningful gains. Among all the theories of hope reviewed, Hope Theory most closely supports criteria established to provide a framework from which interventions can be developed to increase hope among veterans with combat-related PTSD. Further, Hope Theory principles align with biblical theology, providing opportunity for collaborative efforts between Christian chaplains and clinicians to develop and use interventions based …

The Social Conscience Of The Saint John's Bible I -- The Invitation To Forgive, Today And Always, Paul N. Anderson

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

The Bible is not a safe book. It confronts, disturbs and challenges as well as being comforting, instructive and convicting. As arguably the most impactful book in human history, the reason is that it continues to speak to contemporary audiences -- sometimes in ways that sometimes surprise us -- today and always.

Breaking Barriers That Divide Christians And Muslims In Nigeria And Building A Redemptive Relationship, Frederick Chukwuma Obodoagha Sep 2015

Breaking Barriers That Divide Christians And Muslims In Nigeria And Building A Redemptive Relationship, Frederick Chukwuma Obodoagha

Doctor of Ministry

Although Nigeria is a secular state, religion functions there as an expression of political identity and figures prominently in conflicts over resources, land, and political offices. Increasing clashes between religious groups, predominantly Muslim and Christian, have taken the nation from what used to be peaceful coexistence to violent disharmony. In this atmosphere of fear and hate, Christians are called to be peacemakers, building redemptive relationships with Muslims. This dissertation explores practical ways of forging peaceful Christian-Muslim relations. The introductory chapter describes the religious conflict in Nigeria, demonstrating how religious, communal, ethnic, and social divisions degenerated into violence as a result …
