Lewis encountered—and greatly admired—authors involved in occult theory and practice.1 The first such figure was William Butler Yeats, the second, more than two decades later, Charles Williams. Lewis reacted to their occult preoccupations in quite different ways, even while acknowledging his continuing fascination with the subject.
