The purpose of this study was to determine if there was an association between the parent’s knowledge of child passenger safety laws and the use of child passenger safety restraints. A review of current literature demonstrates barriers to incorrect use of child passenger safety seats. The purpose of this Capstone Project study was to answer the question: Does self-care education improve knowledge and decrease 30 day readmission rates in a class of heart failure patients that are at high risk for exacerbation? The study used a randomized control design with a pre-test/post-test. A convenience sample of 50 African Americans diagnosed with heart failure were entered; control group (n=25) and experimental group (n=25). Breastfeeding is recognized as the gold standard for infant nutrition. Women enrolled in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) give birth to over half of the infants born in the US and over 50% of manufactured formula is sold to WIC participants. The aim of this study was to determine the breastfeeding self-efficacy score and to evaluate if there was a relationship between breastfeeding self-efficacy scores and initiation and duration of breastfeeding in a sample of women enrolled in a WIC program. This dissertation was designed to examine the impact of Conversation, Help, Activity, Movement, Participation, Success (CHAMPS), a classroom management program in elementary schools in a district in North Carolina. The participants included principals and teachers who attended a 2-day training course and implemented the CHAMPS program at their schools.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between preceptor mentorship to athletic training students and first-attempt success on the Board of Certification (BOC) exam. Adult learning theory provides the theoretical framework. The study followed a mixed-method approach, using a focus-group discussion to gain a qualitative understanding of results from the online survey.

The purpose of this study was to determine the level of implementing a middle school concept in three private Christian schools using Daniel Stufflebeam’s CIPP model of program evaluation. The National Middle School Survey was used to measure faculty and administrative perceptions of both the value and actual implementation of middle school concepts that to this point have not been formally evaluated in each school. Additionally, student levels of cognitive and psychological engagement and global life satisfaction were measured using the Student Engagement Instrument and Multidimensional Students’ Life Satisfaction Scale.

This research study analyzed the impact of teacher self-efficacy and student engagement on eleventh-grade South Carolina U.S. History and Constitution end-of-course state exam scores. Research questions centered on analyzing the relationships between the variables of teacher efficacy, student engagement, and student achievement as measured by the Teachers’ Sense of Efficacy Scale, Van Amburgh Active Learning Inventory Tool, South Carolina U.S. History and the Constitution end-of-course exam scores, and U.S. History teacher interviews. This dissertation was designed to examine the impact of computer-aided instruction (CAI) on student achievement in a business education course and examine student perceptions of the CAI of use, Programmed Logic for Automated Teaching Operations (P.L.A.T.O.). Students not achieving to their highest potential was a problem. This study sought to understand the impact of self-efficacy and professional development on the implementation of specific Web 2.0 tools in the elementary classroom. There were three research questions addressed in this QUAN-Qual study. Quantitative data were collected through three surveys with 48 total participants: the Web 2.0 tools Utilization Instrument (Pan & Franklin, 2011), the Web 2.0 Utilization Self-Efficacy Instrument (Pan & Franklin, 2011), and the Standards Assessment Inventory 2 (Learning Forward, 2011). This dissertation is a mixed-methods research study on the role grade-level configuration plays on meeting the developmental needs of young adolescents. This study reviews the history of the middle school, explains the controversy over grade span configurations, and articulates the developmental needs of young adolescents and what schools should provide to ensure the success of their students.

This case study examined the impact of small class size using small group instruction with ability grouping for early literacy intervention. In this study, data were analyzed to determine the impact small class size, paired with small group instruction for intervention, had on students in terms of attaining grade-level proficiency standards. DIBELS data and facilitator interviews were analyzed from first and second grade intervention and traditional classes to determine the effectiveness of small class size and ability grouping for students to achieve grade-level proficiency in literacy. The purpose of this dissertation was to determine the effects of repeated reading on readers identified as below grade in sixth and seventh grade. The study was set in a rural middle school located in the foothills of North Carolina.

Students selected for the study were identified utilizing Lexile levels to identify them as below grade level for sixth and seventh grade. Once students were identified, the teachers used Curriculum Based Measures (CBMs) to determine their current fluency levels. The amendments made to Title IX allowed single-gender education to become a viable option for addressing those gaps in achievement. This research examined the variables that influence breastfeeding in first time mothers. The study utilized Fishbein and Ajzen’s Theory of Reasoned Action as the theoretical framework. The sample included 147 first time mothers and utilized a descriptive design with a retrospective chart review. The descriptive study allowed for the identification of variables and patterns or characteristics of first time mothers who chose to breastfeed. Associations between several demographic variables and breastfeeding were identified in this study. By identifying variables that have a significant influence on breastfeeding, focused action plans can be developed to improve both maternal and infant health outcomes.

This capstone project examined nursing students' technology acceptance of podcasting as a tool for nursing skill acquisition. Technology acceptance was determined by measuring the students' perceived competence of the skill along with the perceived usefulness and ease of use of the provided podcasts. A convenience sample of 49 first semester nursing students from an associate degree and practical nursing program participated in the project. The purpose of this study was to examine the level of incivility among registered nurses in the hospital setting. A non-experimental descriptive quantitative design was used.The Nursing Incivility Scale (NIS) was sent to all registered nurses (653) employed at the hospital via email with a response rate of 24% (n=158). The NIS has source specific subscales included. The results indicated that nurses did have experiences with incivility at this facility with the sources being identified as General Hostile Climate, Nurse Gossip and Rumors, Physician Abusive Supervision and Patient and Visitor Displaced Frustration.

The purpose of this quasi-experimental capstone project was to evaluate the impact of high fidelity, student-directed, obstetrical simulation upon chain-of-command self-efficacy of baccalaureate nursing students. The convenience sample, composed of 48 junior nursing students, was randomly divided into four simulation groups, and then further randomly divided into active or observational status. Active participants planned interventions and participated in high fidelity obstetrical simulations related to patient safety and chain-of-command initiation. Active and observational students participated in a combined debriefing session.
