Expectations, Challenges, And Frustrations: Faculty And Administrator Perceptions Of Quality And Assessment, Fred A. Koslowski Iii

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The purpose of this study was not to evaluate the means or methods by which outcomes assessment and quality are being enacted in higher education, or take sides in the raging state and federal policy debate on institutional accountability and efficiency, but rather to describe the reactions, feelings, and perceptions of one particular institutions internal stakeholders to the increasingly shrill rhetoric on such topics. The present research sought to provide a voice for current faculty and administrators who will be responsible for implementing these renewed calls for assessing educational quality: specifically, their perceptions of the value, challenges, opportunities, and frustrations …

A second purpose was to use these reflective journals to evaluate how well the program prepared the students for their role as future school leaders by examining how well their experiences aligned with the ELCC standards.

Web-Enhanced Instruction: A Mixed Bag, Carol Mullen Oct 2005

Web-Enhanced Instruction: A Mixed Bag, Carol Mullen

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Professionals are being expected to function in a progressively complex environment in all fields (Twale & Kochan, 2000). Technology plays a significant role in this challenge (Diem, 2002; Karlen, 2001), particularly for educational leaders (Mendis, 2002). Teaching and leading have become increasingly multifaceted art forms with the advent of learning technologies. University and school faculty are being expected to design, deliver, and assess successful online courses (Fuks, Gerosa, & de Lucena, 2002; Mendis, 2002), often without the necessary training and support (Walker, 2002). As face-to-face contact becomes reduced through online environments, effective communication becomes essential and barriers more pronounced (e.g., …

Academic Leadership In The Research University: Responsibilities For Faculty Governance, Michael Miller, Richard Newman Jul 2005

Academic Leadership In The Research University: Responsibilities For Faculty Governance, Michael Miller, Richard Newman

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Faculty working in research-intensive university environments find a variety of challenges to their time, energies, and resources, including finding balance between the traditional areas of teaching, research, and service. In most research universities, the research focus becomes all encompassing, and institutional service commitments are called into question. The current study of over 500 faculty in research university environments demonstrates the need for shared governance to be clear and purposeful in its work and intentions in order to muster faculty support.

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Volumes of research have documented the implementation of peer assessment in higher education (Falchikov, 1986; Huba & Freed, 2000). The literature doesn’t denote the impact of peer assessment on teacher education students. This study filled that void by investigating first-year teacher education students’ views of peer assessment.

Leadership Excellence: Constructing The Role Of Department, Pamela Benoit Apr 2005

Leadership Excellence: Constructing The Role Of Department, Pamela Benoit

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The role of department chair in today’s colleges and universities is much different and more multifaceted than it was just a decade ago. Academic department chairs must conduct performance reviews, oversee budgets, carry out strategic planning, and negotiate their department’s identity within highly complex institutions (Hecht, Higgerson, Gmelch, & Tucker, 1999). Evidence gathered from ACE workshops indicated that as many as two-thirds of the chairs had no prior administrative experience and yet they face a demanding role requiring a wide range of talents (Hecht, Higgerson, Gmelch, & Tucker, 1999).

Leading Community College Distance Education, John Adams Apr 2005

Leading Community College Distance Education, John Adams

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Technological, demographic, and competitive changes in distance education (DE) pose complex leadership and strategic issues for community colleges. Leaders must establish institutional and academic objectives, develop financial and technological strategies, and organize, market, and evaluate DE initiatives. Their objectives and strategies should anticipate and help shape the developing competitive environment in which their colleges operate. This qualitative case study examined DE administrative and staff leadership roles, organization structures, and strategies at three Midwestern community colleges with expanding DE programs. Leadership teams were small. New roles and organizational structures were evolving, and the colleges were maintaining strong video delivery while developing …

Preserving The Future Of Rural Schools And Communities In The Plains, G. Mills Apr 2005

Preserving The Future Of Rural Schools And Communities In The Plains, G. Mills

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

There is a well-documented pattern in rural areas across the plains, as well as in other parts of the United States, of population loss and the associated consolidation or closing of literally thousands of rural schools. There is also dramatic evidence of the demise of a great many, once prosperous, small communities surrounding those same schools. It is time for more effective and sustained intervention, particularly in strengthening a sense of ‘citizenship of the place’ in those communities, especially among current school-aged children. Without this kind of thoughtful change in philosophy, the pattern of decline will continue to be repeated. …

Strengthening Academic Programs With Proactive Fiscal Management And Other Innovative Strategies, David Buckholdt Apr 2005

Strengthening Academic Programs With Proactive Fiscal Management And Other Innovative Strategies, David Buckholdt

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Price pressures in the form of escalating tuition will continue to impinge upon colleges and universities in an unabated fashion. While distance learning experiments and electronic assisted teaching may provide some relief in training-centric sectors of higher education, the university enterprise remains a labor intensive endeavor. Technology and healthcare expenses will continue to grow at most institutions at a rate far above the cost-of-living index. Public institutions are finding strong resistance to additional support based on tax revenue. Private institutions are increasingly being questioned about the “valueadded” they provide and whether it justifies their premium tuition.

This study reports on the use of outdoor experiential training as a methodology for accelerating the group citizenship and leadership behaviors of undergraduate students. Using the emotional intelligence foundational skills of interpersonal competence and intrapersonal insight as a frame of reference for skill acquisition and measurement, it outlines the results of a self-assessment instrument and a small group problem solving exercise. Students reported a significant increase in group citizenship skills and the problem solving exercise indicated behavioral manifestations of these skills. The importance of incorporating the lessons of outdoor experiential training into an engaged classroom environment, mythological limitations, and opportunities …

An Examination Of Successful Leadership Power Base Perceptions, Tom Tworoger, Robert Preziosi Jan 2005

An Examination Of Successful Leadership Power Base Perceptions, Tom Tworoger, Robert Preziosi

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

This research investigated the relationship between the leader's perception of their power base and the follower's perception of the leader's power base. Two research questions focused the research. Leaders attempt to influence follower behavior (Weber, 1947; Lewin, 1951; Dahl, 1957). Hersey (1969) suggests that leadership equals influence. Furthermore, leadership is closely related to the concept of power (Stodgill, 19 74). Yukl (1989) concluded that French and Raven's work (1959) enjoyed wide acceptance in trying to define the type of leadership. The Power Perception Profile developed by Hersey and Natemeyer (1979) includes French and Raven's (1959) five power bases, French and …

Presence Of Informed Trading In Options Markets: An Experiment Using Monte Carlo Simulation, Rafiqul Bhuyan, Mohammad Robbani, Yuxing Van Jan 2005

Presence Of Informed Trading In Options Markets: An Experiment Using Monte Carlo Simulation, Rafiqul Bhuyan, Mohammad Robbani, Yuxing Van

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

Using Monte Carlo Simulation we show that informed trading take place in the options market. Our results indicate that at-the-money option contracts are less likely to be information based trades. Using Black-Scholes model to evaluate call and put options, we find that with positive and negative information shocks, informed investors are better off trading out-of-the-money and/or in-the-money-options. This is clear evidence that investors with inside or superior information would take advantage of options' leverage effect, Black (1975). Our analysis sheds light on the direction to revisit the models proposed by Easley et al (1998) and Chan et al (2002). We …

A Leadership Primer: Managerial Leadership Defined And Discussed From The Perspective Of Four Leadership Models, Timothy Heinze Jan 2005

A Leadership Primer: Managerial Leadership Defined And Discussed From The Perspective Of Four Leadership Models, Timothy Heinze

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

Managerial leadership is difficult to comprehensively define. A holistic understanding of managerial leadership is best obtained through examining and integrating multiple models. Four leadership models are reviewed from a historical, definitional, and applicatory perspective. The four models include three well-known, heavily researched theories (situational, transformational, and path-goal) and one relative newcomer (grass roots). Each model provides significant insights into the nature of true leadership, and the combination of these four models provides a holistic overview of leadership. After reviewing each model, the paper addresses points of convergence and divergence in order to provide a comprehensive understanding of managerial leadership.

Earnings Whisper Forecasts As Predictors Of Security Returns: Support For The Miller Price Optimism Model, Rebecca Abraham, Charles Harrington Jan 2005

Earnings Whisper Forecasts As Predictors Of Security Returns: Support For The Miller Price Optimism Model, Rebecca Abraham, Charles Harrington

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

This study provides empirical support for the Miller (1977) model which sets forth that security returns reflect the opinions of optimists in markets where more rational and pessimistic trading is excluded by high short-sale costs. Using the differential between earnings whisper forecasts and analysts’ consensus forecasts as a proxy for heterogeneous expectations of earning, this study finds that for stacks with higher differentials, optimistic valuations dominate resulting in significantly lower future security returns than for stocks with lower differentials. Low differentials stacks are shown to resemble value stacks while high differential stocks display the characteristics of glamour stocks.

Leader Development And Emotional Competence: Authentic Leadership, Self-Awareness, And Personal Integrity, Nathan Keller, James Quick, Marilyn Macik-Frey, David Gray, David Mack, Cary Cooper Jan 2005

Leader Development And Emotional Competence: Authentic Leadership, Self-Awareness, And Personal Integrity, Nathan Keller, James Quick, Marilyn Macik-Frey, David Gray, David Mack, Cary Cooper

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

Can leadership be taught? (Doh, 2003) The dramatic growth of leadership academies, institutes, and programs from political science to business and psychology to reserve officer training corps for U.S. military services makes this a compelling question. We say "yes" and then: How can it be taught? And how are leaders developed? Ours is a developmental theory for teaching leaders and suggests that emotional competence is at the heart of developing authentic leaders with personal integrity.

Deny The Consent To Be Governed: Risk Leadership Theory, Curtis Brungardt Ph.D., Chris Crawford Jan 2005

Deny The Consent To Be Governed: Risk Leadership Theory, Curtis Brungardt Ph.D., Chris Crawford

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

Denying the consent to be governed: Risk leadership theory takes a radical approach to leadership change, and organizational improvement. It departs from the traditional and contemporary views of leadership where the leader/power figures serve as the change agents for their organizations. Instead, most change agents are not the recognized leaders/power figures, but rather are the lower and middle level employees because power structures reassert stability and squash change when risk is felt. Organizational leaders, as well as lower and middle level employees, need to recognize the weaknesses of contemporary change models that are top-down and reinforce status quo quick fix …
