Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing Student Projects

Pre-suicidal behaviors are displayed in various ways depending on gender, age, geographical location, and socio-political status. Certain related principles from various disciplines, including psychology, sociology, and biology, can be incorporated into creating an algorithm to guide clinical nursing practice in identifying suicidal behavior(s) that may lead to suicide attempts.

Purpose/Methods: This Quality Improvement (QI) project utilized a Level I, randomized controlled trial, non-equivalent group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design to assess the effectiveness of the suicide algorithm’s educational lesson plan.

Covid-19 Immunization In Refugees And Migrants: Principles And Key Considerations: Interim Guidance, World Health Organization

Security Research Hub Reports

Although everyone is affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, the impact is not shared equally. The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed vulnerabilities and exacerbated existing inequalities within and between low- and high-income countries. These inequalities have had the biggest impact on the poorest and most vulnerable people, which may include refugees and migrants (particularly those in irregular situations). These groups often have vulnerabilities that are heightened by this pandemic. On 31 August 2021, the World Health Organization (WHO) has published an Interim Guidance entitled COVID-19 immunization in refugees and migrants: principles and key considerations. This document, which draws on a recent WHO …

Addressing Health Inequalities In Latin America: The Role Of Social Protection, Lais Abramo, Simone Cecchini, Heidi Ullmann

Security Research Hub Reports

"After more than a decade of progress in various areas of social development, since 2015 poverty has increased, labor market indicators have deteriorated, and the reduction of income inequality has stagnated in Latin America. These trends are of concern as they can affect health indicators and exacerbate profound health inequalities. This situation demands integrated policy responses that can create synergies between different sectors. There is growing recognition of the role of social protection in the eradication of poverty and the reduction of inequality. Various social protection mechanisms buffer against the costs of accessing health services directly and indirectly. By expanding …

Workplace Incivility Toward Individuals With Disabilities, Secure Attachment Style, And Mental Health: Focus On Mediator And Moderator Effects, Mia Heikkila

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Despite the value of workplace civility, civility has been replaced by social exchanges that include statements and behaviors deemed largely unacceptable and undeniably rude. One type of rude behavior that appears innocuous is called workplace incivility, yet incivility disturbs efficient functioning among employees, intensifies work stress, and poses a grave financial hazard to an organization. Literature expressly on incivility toward individuals with disabilities is virtually non-existent, although emerging literature reveals that employees with disabilities are at a greater risk of experiencing workplace mistreatment vis-à-vis employees without disabilities. This quantitative study investigated the role of workplace incivility with respect to individuals …

Mortality In Rohingya Refugee Camps In Bangladesh: Historical, Social, And Political Context, Parveen K. Parmar, Rowen O. Jin, Meredith Walsh, Jennifer Scott

Security Research Hub Reports

Fifty-two maternal deaths occurred between September 2017 and August 2018 in the Rohingya refugee camps in Ukhia and Teknaf Upazilas, Cox's Bazar District, Bangladesh. Behind every one of these lives lost is a complex narrative of historical, social, and political forces, which provide an important context for reproductive health programming in Rohingya camps. Rohingya women and girls have experienced human rights violations in Myanmar for decades, including government-sponsored sexual violence and population control efforts. An extension of nationalist, anti-Rohingya policies, the attacks of 2017 resulted in the rape and murder of an unknown number of women. The socio-cultural context among …

Essays On Women's Issues And Economic Development, Amy Ramnarine Jul 2017

Essays On Women's Issues And Economic Development, Amy Ramnarine

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is composed of three essays under the recurring theme of women’s issues, child health and economic development. In the first chapter, I examine the effect of Child Marriage on the health outcomes of offspring in Bangladesh. I use an exogenous variation in drought and flood shocks as an instrument for Child Marriage and measure children’s health outcomes by stunting, from the height-for-age index. I develop a theoretical model to show that the decision to marry a daughter early is driven by the type of income shocks that a household is exposed to. From the empirical estimation, I find …

Social Networks, Health & Hispanic Gay Men Living In South Florida, Victor Christian Vila

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Aging Hispanic populations are expected to increase in the United States (U.S.) to 21.5 million by 2060 according to the National Council on Aging (NCA) (2014). Although actual estimates vary, Gates (2013) asserts that over one million Hispanics identify as gay or bisexual and their unique needs must be explored (Clover, 2006; Cohn & Taylor, 2010; Fenkl, 2014). Unfortunately, few studies examine aging Hispanic men who identify as gay or bisexual according to the National Hispanic Council on Aging (NHCOA) (2013). The objective of the current study was to extend the limited research on aging gay/bisexual men in the southeastern …

The current study was a cross-sectional examination of data collected during an HIV risk reduction intervention in south Florida. The purpose of the study was to explore the relationships between neighborhood stress, parenting, attitudes, and adolescent sexual intentions and behavior. The Theory of Planned Behavior was used as a model to guide variable selection and propose an interaction pathway between predictors and outcomes.

Potential predictor variables measured for adolescents ages 13-18 (n=196) included communication about sex, parent-family connectedness, parental presence, parent-adolescent activity participation, attitudes about sex and condom use, neighborhood disorder, and exposure to violence. Outcomes were behavioral intentions and …
