Role Of Selenium In Viral Infections With A Major Focus On Sars-Cov-2, Sabrina Sales Martinez, Yongjun Huang, Leonardo Acuna, Eduardo Laverde
Coronavirus Research at FIU
Viral infections have afflicted human health and despite great advancements in scientific knowledge and technologies, continue to affect our society today. The current coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has put a spotlight on the need to review the evidence on the impact of nutritional strategies to maintain a healthy immune system, particularly in instances where there are limited therapeutic treatments. Selenium, an essential trace element in humans, has a long history of lowering the occurrence and severity of viral infections. Much of the benefits derived from selenium are due to its incorporation into selenocysteine, an important component of proteins known as selenoproteins. …

Tri-Level Hierarchical Coordinated Control Of A Largescale Electric Vehicle Charging In The Smart Grid, Tawfiq M. Aljohani
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Electric Vehicles (EVs) are considered one of humanity's greatest hopes to combat the climate change crises in light of their great potentials to reduce Greenhouse Gases (GHG) emissions from two main sources: the electric power industry and the fossil-based transportation sector. To help expedite the large-scale adoption of EVs on the roads, optimal solutions are needed to overcome the technical and operational barriers that face the electrical network. This is due to the introduction of significant load levels from EVs; a substantial number is expected during peak demand hours. This dissertation addresses the various interaction between different parts of the …

Dramáticas Del Aprendizaje Mediado Por Tecnologías En Tiempos De Arrojo A La Virtualidad, Lucrecia Sotelo

Tutelar La Soberanía Del Que Lee (Y Juega). Una Reflexión Inspirada En Walter Benjamin, María Emilia López
Tutelar La Soberanía Del Que Lee (Y Juega).

Tobacco is a risk factor of head and neck cancer (HNC) and smoking cessation alone may reduce HNC risk by 70%. Soluble CD44 (solCD44), a cell surface receptor linked to cell proliferation and migration, and total protein (TP) levels can detect early HNC. This study aims to determine whether salivary solCD44 and TP levels in oral rinses change following a smoking cessation program. 150 smokers provided oral rinse samples at baseline and at a 12-month follow-up after participation in a smoking cessation program. Assays to measure levels of solCD44, TP, and cotinine, a metabolite used as a biomarker of tobacco …

Evaluation Of An Educational Intervention Regarding The Importance Of Practicing Sun Protective Behaviors Among Racially Diverse College Students: A Quality Improvement Project, Alexandra Jade Palumbo, C. Victoria Framil
Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing Student Projects
Any sun exposure one receives is considered a future risk related to the development of skin cancer. The color of one’s skin and an individual’s race are two key factors that can greatly contribute to one’s potential risk. Young adults have been shown to participate in risky behaviors. Racially diverse individuals are noted to have decreased knowledge related to sun safety and practicing protective behaviors. This quality improvement (QI) project was implemented in a virtual setting within a majority minority serving urban university. Participants included Florida International University’s (FIU) students.
A comprehensive literature search was completed and it revealed a …
Postpartum Depression: Improving Screening And Outcomes Amongst Providers, Jessica Diane Hoke, Rosa Roche
Postpartum Depression: Improving Screening And Outcomes Amongst Providers, Jessica Diane Hoke, Rosa Roche
Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing Student Projects
This quality improvement project aimed to educate clinicians and improve their knowledge regarding postpartum depression (PPD) to increase this population's outcomes. The post-birth period yields the best results for self-reporting and self-recognition of PPD (Martin, Norris, and Martin, 2020). When the clinician educated the client about PPD before birth, it prepared the patient with the knowledge required to be autonomous and informed regarding PPD and early intervention. Doing this allowed the patient to seek help earlier and treatment if signs and symptoms of PPD develop before their postpartum visit. To evaluate education to the participant, the clinician took a pre-test, …

The HEI QI project was performed at East Pompano Pediatrics outpatient clinic in Pompano Beach Florida. Outpatient providers and their care assistants at East Pompano Pediatrics in Pompano FL, were the target population (N=9), 100% of the sample were women, (n=3) were Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs), …
A Paradigm Shift: The Implementation Of Utilizing Dexmedetomidine And Propofol For Laryngeal Mask Airway Insertion, Linnet Flores, Ann Miller, Emie Dieudonne
A Paradigm Shift: The Implementation Of Utilizing Dexmedetomidine And Propofol For Laryngeal Mask Airway Insertion, Linnet Flores, Ann Miller, Emie Dieudonne
Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing Student Projects
ABSTRACT
Background: Laryngeal mask airway (LMA) is a common airway device used intraoperatively for anesthetic airway management. The insertion of LMA requires anesthesia and adequate suppression of airway reflexes. The factors that affect the insertion and positioning of LMA are jaw relaxation, mouth opening, episodes of coughing or movement during insertion, and the depth of anesthesia. If all these parameters are satisfactory, then there will be a minimal hemodynamic stress response, which is required for LMA insertion. In search of an optimum drug, recent studies have suggested that dexmedetomidine is superior to fentanyl as an anesthetic adjuvant in decreasing the …

The Use Of Virtual Reality In Patients Undergoing Regional Anesthesia And Its Impact On Patient Satisfaction, Anxiety, And Pain Level: An Evidence-Based Education Module, Iris Molina, Valerie Diaz
Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing Student Projects
Background: Anxiety and pain experienced when regional anesthesia (RA) is implemented can hinder patient care due to the nature of the procedure. Throughout the implementation of RA, virtual reality (VR) can distract patients from noisy, scary, and uncomfortable environments and alleviate these feelings at different points in the patient care experience. This problem is often overlooked and addressed incorrectly. An educational module will be presented with the findings of the investigation to the certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNA) to inform them about the benefits virtual reality may have on patients undergoing regional anesthetic techniques.
Objectives: The literature review aimed to …
Improving Skin Cancer Knowledge And Prevention Among College Students: A Quality Improvement Project, Rebecca Behnejad, Ivette Hidalgo
Improving Skin Cancer Knowledge And Prevention Among College Students: A Quality Improvement Project, Rebecca Behnejad, Ivette Hidalgo
Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing Student Projects
Skin cancer is among the most common diagnosed cancers worldwide, as incidence rates have continued to be on the surge (Compres et al., 2020). Incidents of basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and malignant melanoma (MM) are still increasing. This trend can be counteracted by means of primary and secondary prevention because the main risk factor for skin cancer is ultraviolent (UV) exposure. Thus, early detection of skin cancer can be cured successfully. Despite suggestions of early screening, lack of knowledge and behaviors regarding skin cancer prevention and awareness are still prevalent among the college student population. Clinicians …
Utilization And Documentation Of Hospital Admission Depression Screening: A Quality Improvement Project, Kimberly A. Mcneese
Utilization And Documentation Of Hospital Admission Depression Screening: A Quality Improvement Project, Kimberly A. Mcneese
Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing Student Projects
Background: Connections between inflammation and the brain appear to be driving the development of depression in modern times. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is inherently a chronic inflammatory illness, and evidence supports a bidirectional relationship between CVD and depressive disorders. Depression is a mental health condition that is commonly comorbid in individuals with CVD, exacerbates other chronic diseases, and negatively affects health outcomes. Individuals with CVD are at a higher risk of experiencing depressive symptoms and developing depressive disorders than members of the public. Clinicians are not aware of the high levels of comorbidity between CVD and depression. Early detection of depressive …

Parent/Legal Guardian Knowledge Of Asthma Prevention Management In Children Diagnosed With The Disease: A Quality Improvement Project, Ivette Hidalgo, Jasmine Lema
Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing Student Projects
Abstract
In the pediatric population, asthma is the most common chronic disease, and the most common cause of acute hospitalizations. A review of literature was completed to find a clear correlation between increased knowledge, reinforcement, feedback, and better asthma control. It is postulated that an emphasis on increasing parental/legal guardian knowledge on asthma management and treatment could increase parental/legal guardian confidence and competence in caring for a child with an acute asthma exacerbation, while addressing parental/legal guardian needs in terms of health literacy. This Quality Improvement (QI) project aimed to increase parental/legal guardian competence and confidence in managing their child’s …

Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing Student Projects
Background: Virtual reality (VR) is a relatively new technology that has garnered medical researchers' attention. VR is a computer-generated depiction of an immersive environment that can be viewed through a headset.1 This multi-sensory immersion provided by VR hypothetically distracts the patient from pain and can reduce pain levels in patients experiencing pain.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to improve anesthesia provider knowledge on the value of virtual reality and its effects as a distraction to reduce pain levels. A literature review including primary research studies addresses the PICO question: "Can immersive virtual reality be used as an …
High Performance Computing Framework For Tera-Scale Database Search Of Mass Spectrometry Data, Muhammad Haseeb, Fahad Saeed
High Performance Computing Framework For Tera-Scale Database Search Of Mass Spectrometry Data, Muhammad Haseeb, Fahad Saeed
School of Computing and Information Sciences
Database peptide search algorithms deduce peptides from mass spectrometry data. There has been substantial effort in improving their computational efficiency to achieve larger and more complex systems biology studies. However, modern serial and high-performance computing (HPC) algorithms exhibit suboptimal performance mainly due to their ineffective parallel designs (low resource utilization) and high overhead costs. We present an HPC framework, called HiCOPS, for efficient acceleration of the database peptide search algorithms on distributed-memory supercomputers. HiCOPS provides, on average, more than tenfold improvement in speed and superior parallel performance over several existing HPC database search software. We also formulate a mathematical model …
Examining The Effects Of Neighborhood Factors And Geography On Racial/Ethnic Disparities In Achieving Sustained Viral Suppression, Rahel Dawit
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Sustained viral suppression (all viral load tests/mL in a year) decreases the risk of HIV transmission and disease progression to AIDS for people with HIV. Racial/ethnic minorities living with HIV are particularly challenged by barriers, including neighborhood factors, to maintain viral suppression. This dissertation examined the contribution of neighborhood and geographic factors on racial/ethnic disparities in achieving sustained viral suppression. A cross-sectional analysis of secondary data collected in 2017 for 6491 clients enrolled in the Miami-Dade County Ryan White Program (RWP) was conducted.
The first study examined the moderating role of neighborhood level factors on the association between race/ethnicity and …
The Use Of Continuous Perioperative Dexmedetomidine Infusion To Reduce Opioid Consumption In Adult Patients Undergoing Spinal Lumbar Surgery: A Quality Improvement Project, Michael Otte, Fernando Alfonso, Jampierre Mato
The Use Of Continuous Perioperative Dexmedetomidine Infusion To Reduce Opioid Consumption In Adult Patients Undergoing Spinal Lumbar Surgery: A Quality Improvement Project, Michael Otte, Fernando Alfonso, Jampierre Mato
Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing Student Projects
Background: Exposure to opioids, preoperatively or during surgery, is a significant risk factor for developing opioid addiction and may increase the risk of acute tolerance and chronic use. More specifically, spinal lumbar surgery is associated with increased opioid requirements to counter associated pain secondary to lumbar manipulation. Currently, there is a lack of studies that exemplify the anesthetist’s role in minimizing narcotic use while effectively managing pain for this patient-specific population. Dexmedetomidine, an alpha-2 agonist, administered as a continuous infusion, has been shown to reduce opioid consumption in spinal lumbar surgery patients.
Context: The implementation phase of this quality improvement …

Title
An Evidence-Based Comparison of Decontamination Strategies for the Safe Utilization of Post-Decontaminated N95 Filtering Facepiece Respirators by Anesthesia Providers
Background/Purpose/Question
Because the current pandemic threatens a limited supply of N95 filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs), many anesthesia providers have resorted to the decontamination and reuse of single-use FFR. There is little evidence of the relative safety and efficacy of the different decontamination methods. The lack of concrete evidence and guidance regarding the reuse of FFR is a cause for concern for anesthesia providers, who are at constant risk of exposure to airborne diseases. This evidence-based review seeks to answer the …
The Utilization Of Dexmedetomidine As An Anesthetic Adjunct In Spinal Anesthesia To Reduce Perioperative Consumption Of Opioids, Jillian Gil, Fernando Alfonso, Anika Dianez
The Utilization Of Dexmedetomidine As An Anesthetic Adjunct In Spinal Anesthesia To Reduce Perioperative Consumption Of Opioids, Jillian Gil, Fernando Alfonso, Anika Dianez
Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing Student Projects
Background: Opioid consumption is at an alarming rate in the United States. Their side effects have attracted debates on whether they are indispensable and continuously prompt further consideration of alternative approaches. Recent studies have suggested that dexmedetomidine has a good analgesic profile and can reduce opioid consumption. Additional studies are warranted to establish whether dexmedetomidine as an adjunct therapy can influence opioid consumption in surgical units.
Objectives: This literature review aimed to evaluate the current randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on the impact of dexmedetomidine as adjunct therapy on opioid consumption and further recommend best available practices on the current issue. …
Practitioners' Learning About Healthcare Supply Chain Management In The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Public Procurement Perspective, Andrea S. Patrucco
Practitioners' Learning About Healthcare Supply Chain Management In The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Public Procurement Perspective, Andrea S. Patrucco
Coronavirus Research at FIU
Purpose The procurement and supply of crucial healthcare products in the early stages of the COVID-19 emergency were chaotic. To prepare for future crises, we must be able to describe what went wrong, and why, and map out ways to build agility and resilience. How can this be done effectively, given the highly complex and diverse network of actors across governments, care providers and supply chains, and the extreme uncertainty and dynamism in the procurement system and supplier markets? The purpose of this study was to capture learning from practitioners in real time in a way that could frame and …
