Global Capitalism, Immigrant Labor, And The Struggle For Justice, William I. Robinson, Xuan Santos
Global Capitalism, Immigrant Labor, And The Struggle For Justice, William I. Robinson, Xuan Santos
Class, Race and Corporate Power
Around the world borders are militarized, states are stepping up repressive anti-immigrant controls, and native publics are turning immigrants into scapegoats for the spiraling crisis of global capitalism. The massive displacement and primitive accumulation unleashed by free trade agreements and neo-liberal policies, as well as state and “private” violence has resulted in a virtually inexhaustible immigrant labor reserve for the global economy. State controls over immigration and immigrant labor have several functions for the system: 1) state repression and criminalization of undocumented immigration make immigrants vulnerable and deportable and therefore subject to conditions of super-exploitation, super-control and hyper-surveillance; 2) anti-immigrant …

The Effect Of Rapport Building In Police Interrogations: Can Rapport Improve The Diagnosticity Of Confession Evidence?, Daniella K. Villalba
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Police investigators rely heavily on eliciting confessions from suspects to solve crimes and prosecute offenders. Therefore, it is essential to develop evidence-based interrogation techniques that will motivate guilty suspects to confess but minimize false confessions from the innocent. Currently, there is little scientific support for specific interrogation techniques that may increase true confessions and decrease false confessions. Rapport building is a promising possibility. Despite its recommendation in police interrogation guidelines, there is no scientific evidence showing the effect of rapport building in police interrogations. The current study examined, experimentally, whether using rapport as an interrogation technique would influence participants’ decisions …

A Critical Examination Of The Experience Of Being A Gay Officer In The Masculinized Industry Of Law Enforcement, Joshua C. Collins
A Critical Examination Of The Experience Of Being A Gay Officer In The Masculinized Industry Of Law Enforcement, Joshua C. Collins
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The overarching purpose of this collected papers dissertation was to examine the experience of being a gay officer in the masculinized industry of law enforcement (LE). In general, in LE careers, gay men are less accepted, perceived as less capable and less masculine, and typecast or pigeonholed into certain roles. Yet, research on the lived experiences of gay male law enforcement officers (LEOs) is scant. This dissertation unfolded across three studies and four collected papers.
Study #1, a structured literature review of masculinized industries, supported a forward-looking understanding of what makes an industry masculinized, namely that these industries perpetuate implicit …

Understanding Rapport-Building In Investigative Interviews: Does Rapport's Effect On Witness Memory And Suggestibility Depend On The Interviewer?, Jenna M. Kieckhaefer
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Most investigative interviewing protocols, including the National Institute of Justice’s 1999 guidelines on collecting eyewitness evidence, recommend building rapport with cooperative witnesses to increase the quality and quantity of details obtained at recall. To date, only three published articles have empirically addressed the effects of rapport-building on adult witness memory, and all suggest an increase in witness accuracy under certain conditions. However, to our knowledge no research has addressed the importance of the investigator when building rapport and whether rapport can increase witness susceptibility to suggestive-leading questions – the aim of the current research. Specifically, this project examined the effects …

Identification Of Characteristic Volatile Organic Compounds Released During The Decomposition Process Of Human Remains And Analogues, Norma Iris Caraballo
Identification Of Characteristic Volatile Organic Compounds Released During The Decomposition Process Of Human Remains And Analogues, Norma Iris Caraballo
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The manner in which remains decompose has been and is currently being researched around the world, yet little is still known about the generated scent of death. In fact, it was not until the Casey Anthony trial that research on the odor released from decomposing remains, and the compounds that it is comprised of, was brought to light. The Anthony trial marked the first admission of human decomposition odor as forensic evidence into the court of law; however, it was not “ready for prime time” as the scientific research on the scent of death is still in its infancy.
