The present study was numerically inquired the heat transfer performance and fluid flow characteristic of a helical micro double-tube heat exchanger (HMDTHX) using the finite volume method. The tube length was considered to be constantly equal to 30 mm, and 12 different configurations were modeled by changing in turn number and pitch length (P) for Reynolds numbers of 50, 100, 150, and 200. The findings indicated that the heat transfer would enhance by applying any helix angle in the straight tube. However, it had an optimum point which varied by Reynolds number (Re). Rising Re caused overall heat transfer coefficient …

Modeling Of A Heat-Induced Buckling Of Plates Using The Mesh-Free Method, Humberto Mejia Jul 2014

Modeling Of A Heat-Induced Buckling Of Plates Using The Mesh-Free Method, Humberto Mejia

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the process of engineering design of structural shapes, the flat plate analysis results can be generalized to predict behaviors of complete structural shapes. In this case, the purpose of this project is to analyze a thin flat plate under conductive heat transfer and to simulate the temperature distribution, thermal stresses, total displacements, and buckling deformations. The current approach in these cases has been using the Finite Element Method (FEM), whose basis is the construction of a conforming mesh. In contrast, this project uses the mesh-free Scan Solve Method. This method eliminates the meshing limitation using a non-conforming mesh. I …

Solution Of Nonlinear Transient Heat Transfer Problems, Donovan O. Buckley Nov 2010

Solution Of Nonlinear Transient Heat Transfer Problems, Donovan O. Buckley

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the presented thesis work, meshfree method with distance fields was extended to obtain solution of nonlinear transient heat transfer problems. The thesis work involved development and implementation of numerical algorithms, data structure, and software. Numerical and computational properties of the meshfree method with distance fields were investigated. Convergence and accuracy of the methodology was validated by analytical solutions, and solutions produced by commercial FEM software (ANSYS 12.1). The research was focused on nonlinearities caused by temperature-dependent thermal conductivity. The behavior of the developed numerical algorithms was observed for both weak and strong temperature-dependency of thermal conductivity. Oseen and Newton-Kantorovich …

Numerical Investigation On The Heat Transfer Enhancement Using Micro/Nano Phase-Change Particulate Flow, Keqiang Xing Nov 2007

Numerical Investigation On The Heat Transfer Enhancement Using Micro/Nano Phase-Change Particulate Flow, Keqiang Xing

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The introduction of phase change material fluid and nanofluid in micro-channel heat sink design can significantly increase the cooling capacity of the heat sink because of the unique features of these two kinds of fluids. To better assist the design of a high performance micro-channel heat sink using phase change fluid and nanofluid, the heat transfer enhancement mechanism behind the flow with such fluids must be completely understood. A detailed parametric study is conducted to further investigate the heat transfer enhancement of the phase change material particle suspension flow, by using the two-phase non-thermal-equilibrium model developed by Hao and Tao …
