Investigation Of Memory Related Cortical Thalamic Circuitry In The Human Brain, Puck C. Reeders
Investigation Of Memory Related Cortical Thalamic Circuitry In The Human Brain, Puck C. Reeders
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examined the role of medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and the hippocampus (HC) in episodic memory, and provides a novel approach to identify the midline thalamus mediating mPFC-HC interactions in humans. The mPFC and HC are critical to the temporal organization of episodic memory, and these interactions are disrupted in several mental health and neurological disorders. In the first study, I provide evidence that the mPFC is involved in ordinal retrieval, and the HC is active in temporal context retrieval in remembering the order of when events happen. In the second study, I focus on the anatomical basis of …
Exercise, Cognition, And Cannabis Use In Adolescents, Ileana Pacheco-Colón
Exercise, Cognition, And Cannabis Use In Adolescents, Ileana Pacheco-Colón
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Heavy and/or chronic cannabis use has been associated with neurocognitive impairment and decline, often in domains such as memory and executive functioning. On the other hand, exercise has been linked to positive effects on brain and cognitive health across the lifespan, as well as to better substance use outcomes. Despite this, little is known about the ways in which exercise could help prevent or ameliorate adverse cannabis-related outcomes among adolescents.
Through three separate studies, the current dissertation examines interrelations among exercise, cognition, and cannabis use in children and adolescents in an effort to determine whether exercise can prevent or ameliorate …
The Impact Of Stress On Episodic Memory In The Workplace, Jennifer Houston
The Impact Of Stress On Episodic Memory In The Workplace, Jennifer Houston
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this dissertation was threefold: to identify the relationship between experience of stress and episodic memory encoding and retrieval, to examine the interpersonal factors of personality and psychopathology that impact how individuals cope with or mitigate workplace stress, and to pinpoint how interpersonal differences and memory processes impact the workplace outcomes of job satisfaction and motivation. The results suggest that the relationship between work stressors and memory processes does exist, that personality and psychopathology play a significant role in the relationship between stress and memory, and that the experience of negative memories moderates the relationship between work stress …
Assessing Cognitive Interview Mnemonics And Their Effectiveness With Non-Native English Speakers, Bryan Keith Wylie
Assessing Cognitive Interview Mnemonics And Their Effectiveness With Non-Native English Speakers, Bryan Keith Wylie
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The cognitive interview is a widely recommended forensic interviewing strategy which elicits more details than comparison interviews. However, little research has attended to which of its component mnemonics drive the overall effect. Furthermore, some mnemonics—like asking witnesses to recall in reverse order—are cognitively demanding. Responding to cognitively demanding interview mnemonics may be challenging for witnesses who are already under heavy cognitive load, such as non-native English speakers. Speaking a second language is a cognitively difficult task that may leave non-native English speakers with limited cognitive resources to devote to complex interviewing mnemonics. Other mnemonics, though, may be particularly beneficial for …
Commemorative Bodies: (Un)Making Racial Order And Cuban White Supremacy In Little Havana's Heritage District, Corinna Jeanne Moebius
Commemorative Bodies: (Un)Making Racial Order And Cuban White Supremacy In Little Havana's Heritage District, Corinna Jeanne Moebius
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation unearths memory- and place-making practices, processes and “racializing regimes of representation” in Little Havana’s heritage district, now a major tourism destination in Miami, Florida. It draws on extensive ethnographic fieldwork, interviews, and consultations of various archives that span decades back to the 1960s and trace the origins of the district in plans for a “Latin Quarter.”
My analyses borrow from and combine various bodies of scholarly work to examine and deconstruct the use of always multi-vocal “commemorative bodies” for the production of racial narratives that are embedded in--and give shape to--acts of memorialization and commemoration.
By examining the …
A Field Study Examining The Effect Of High Intoxication Levels And Identification Format On Witnesses' Memory For Faces And Events, Christopher Altman
A Field Study Examining The Effect Of High Intoxication Levels And Identification Format On Witnesses' Memory For Faces And Events, Christopher Altman
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Members of the legal system (e.g., experts, jurors, investigators) are often skeptical of the information provided by intoxicated witnesses given the negative stigma surrounding alcohol and memory. However, studies examining the relationship between alcohol and witness memory often find that alcohol has no effect on peoples’ recall or their ability to identify a previously seen face. While insightful, the validity of these findings has been questioned given the low-moderate blood alcohol concentration (BAC) levels tested in these predominantly laboratory-based studies, which may not be high enough to consistently expose the cognitive deficits alcohol is expected to create. The present study …
Exposure To Estrogenic Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals And Brain Health, Mark Preciados
Exposure To Estrogenic Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals And Brain Health, Mark Preciados
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The overall objective of this dissertation was to examine exposures to the estrogenic endocrine disrupting chemicals (EEDCs), phthalates, bisphenol-A (BPA), and the metalloestrogens cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), and manganese (Mn) in an older geriatric aged-population and examine associations with brain health. Given the evidence that EEDCs affect brain health and play a role in the development of cognitive dysfunction and neurodegenerative disease, and the constant environmental exposure through foods and everyday products has led this to becoming a great public health concern. Using a bioinformatic approach to find nuclear respiratory factor 1 (NRF1) gene targets involved in mitochondrial dysfunction, that …
Multimodal Imaging For Enhanced Diagnosis And For Assessing Progression Of Alzheimer’S Disease, Chunfei Li
Multimodal Imaging For Enhanced Diagnosis And For Assessing Progression Of Alzheimer’S Disease, Chunfei Li
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A neuroimaging feature extraction model is designed to extract region-based image features whose values are predicted by base learners trained on raw neuroimaging morphological variables. The main objectives are to identify Alzheimer’s disease (AD) in its earliest manifestations, and be able to predict and gauge progression of the disease through the stages of mild cognitive impairment (EMCI), late MCI (LMCI) and AD. The model was evaluated on the ADNI database and showed 75.26% accuracy for the challenging EMCI diagnosis based on the 10-fold cross-validation. Our approach also performed well for the other binary classifications: EMCI vs. LMCI (72.3%), EMCI vs. …

Eliciting A Perpetrator Description Using The Cognitive Interview: Influences On Investigative Utility, Geri Satin
Eliciting A Perpetrator Description Using The Cognitive Interview: Influences On Investigative Utility, Geri Satin
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Cognitive Interview (CI) has been shown in over one hundred studies to enhance eyewitness recall. However, no study has explored whether the CI improves police job performance. The current study was the first to test the practical value of the CI in a criminal investigation, testing participants’ performance on key police tasks using either a perpetrator description elicited from a CI or from a standard police interview (SI).
In an earlier study, student witnesses were exposed to a simulated robbery and were then interviewed using either a CI or an SI to elicit a description of the robber (comprised …
Memory, Processing Speed, And The Effects Of Cognitive Exercise On The Aging Brain, Alexis D. Yero
Memory, Processing Speed, And The Effects Of Cognitive Exercise On The Aging Brain, Alexis D. Yero
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the current study was to investigate, and expain, the effects of an intervention known as “The Five Task Approach” (TFTA); a cognitive intervention hereby utilized within the realm of the geriatric population, as a means of taxing and strengthening cortical areas associated with memory, and visual processing. This study revealed that even short-term exposure to cognitive activities, and therapeutic cueing known to tax areas connected to visual perception, may have an effect on one’s global cognition, generalized memory, and the accuracy of one’s visual perception. It was demonstrated that even brief cognitive intervention geared at taxing cortical …
Optimizing Main Memory Usage In Modern Computing Systems To Improve Overall System Performance, Daniel Jose Campello
Optimizing Main Memory Usage In Modern Computing Systems To Improve Overall System Performance, Daniel Jose Campello
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Operating Systems use fast, CPU-addressable main memory to maintain an application’s temporary data as anonymous data and to cache copies of persistent data stored in slower block-based storage devices. However, the use of this faster memory comes at a high cost. Therefore, several techniques have been implemented to use main memory more efficiently in the literature. In this dissertation we introduce three distinct approaches to improve overall system performance by optimizing main memory usage.
First, DRAM and host-side caching of file system data are used for speeding up virtual machine performance in today’s virtualized data centers. The clustering of VM …

Eyewitness Choosing Behavior: The Role Of Ecphoric Experience And Non-Memorial Cues, Brian S. Cahill
Eyewitness Choosing Behavior: The Role Of Ecphoric Experience And Non-Memorial Cues, Brian S. Cahill
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Researchers’ attempts at understanding the processes underlying witness choosing behavior have focused on applying models that predict that identifications will be primarily driven by memorial factors. However, research has shown that several non-memorial variables affect witness choosing behavior (e.g., administrator influence, clothing bias, co-witness information); thus a full understanding of the processes underlying witness choosing behavior needs to account for these effects. While the memory-based models do attempt to provide explanations for the effects of non-memorial based variables on choosing behavior they all do so within a memorial context. However, I will argue a lineup task is not simply a …
Attentional Competition: Weapon Focus, Encoding Time, And Memory Accuracy Correlations Between Crime Scene Items, Seyram Kekessie
Attentional Competition: Weapon Focus, Encoding Time, And Memory Accuracy Correlations Between Crime Scene Items, Seyram Kekessie
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The present study examines the relationships between recognition and recall accuracy of faces, and recognition and recall accuracy of objects. Secondly, this study examines the influence of weapon presence on description and identification accuracy, and whether encoding time moderates the effect. 713 participants watched an image that was either displayed for five seconds or twenty seconds, and either included a weapon or no weapon. Subsequently, they were asked to give descriptions of what they saw before viewing a lineup that either included the perpetrator or was made up of innocent suspects. Results indicated that witnesses’ description accuracy of the crime …
Can Intersensory Redundancy And Social Contingency Enhance Memory In Bobwhite Quail Hatchlings?, Namitha Raju
Can Intersensory Redundancy And Social Contingency Enhance Memory In Bobwhite Quail Hatchlings?, Namitha Raju
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Recent findings indicate that bimodal-redundant stimulation promotes perceptual learning and recruits attention to amodal properties in non-human as well as human infants. However it is not clear if bimodal-redundant stimulation can also facilitate memory during the postnatal period. Moreover, most animal and human studies have employed an operant paradigm to study memory, but have not compared the effectiveness of contingent versus passive presentation of information on memory. The current study investigated the role of unimodal versus bimodal presentation and, the role of a contingent versus passive exposure in memory retention in the bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus). Results revealed …
Optimizing Storage And Memory Systems For Energy And Performance, Luis Enrique Useche
Optimizing Storage And Memory Systems For Energy And Performance, Luis Enrique Useche
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Electrical energy is an essential resource for the modern world. Unfortunately, its price has almost doubled in the last decade. Furthermore, energy production is also currently one of the primary sources of pollution. These concerns are becoming more important in data-centers. As more computational power is required to serve hundreds of millions of users, bigger data-centers are becoming necessary. This results in higher electrical energy consumption. Of all the energy used in data- centers, including power distribution units, lights, and cooling, computer hardware consumes as much as 80%. Consequently, there is opportunity to make data-centers more energy efficient by designing …
Memory Conformity: Actors And Bystanders, Mariana E. Carlucci
Memory Conformity: Actors And Bystanders, Mariana E. Carlucci
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation explored memory conformity effects on people who interacted with a confederate and of bystanders to that interaction. Two studies were carried out. Study 1 was conducted in the field. A male confederate approached a group of people at the beach and had a brief interaction. About a minute later a research assistant approached the group and administered a target-absent lineup to each person in the group. Analyses revealed that memory conformity occurred during the lineup task. Bystanders were twice as likely to conform as those who interacted with the confederate. Study 2 was carried out in a laboratory …
Estrogen And Lithium: Facilitating Factors Involved In Brain Cell Signaling Pathways, James J. Valdes
Estrogen And Lithium: Facilitating Factors Involved In Brain Cell Signaling Pathways, James J. Valdes
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Learning and memory in adult females decline during menopause and estrogen replacement therapy is commonly prescribed during menopause. Post-menopausal women tend to suffer from depression and are prescribed antidepressants – in addition to hormone therapy. Estrogen replacement therapy is a topic that engenders debate since several studies contradict its efficacy as a palliative therapy for cognitive decline and neurodegenerative diseases. Signaling transduction pathways can alter brain cell activity, survival, and morphology by facilitating transcription factor DNA binding and protein production. The steroidal hormone estrogen and the anti-depressant drug lithium interact through these signaling transduction pathways facilitating transcription factor activation. The …
