Managing Small-Medium Cities In A Time Of Globalization: Experiences And Evidence From Florida’S Public Managers, Nadine V. Wedderburn Dec 2009

Managing Small-Medium Cities In A Time Of Globalization: Experiences And Evidence From Florida’S Public Managers, Nadine V. Wedderburn

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examines how public management practitioners in small and medium-sized Florida cities perceive globalization and its impact on public management practice. Using qualitative analysis, descriptive statistics and factor analysis methods, data obtained from a survey and semi-structured interviews were studied to comprehend how public managers view the management and control of their municipalities in a time of globalization. The study shows that the public managers’ perceptions of globalization and its impact on public management in Florida’s small-medium cities are nuanced. Whereas some public managers feel that globalization has significant impacts on municipalities’ viability, others opine that globalization has no …

Resource, Strategies, Location Determinants, And Host Country Location Choice By Emerging Market Firms, Naveen K. Jain

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The extant literature had studied the determinants of the firms’ location decisions with help of host country characteristics and distances between home and host countries. Firm resources and its internationalization strategies had found limited attention in this literature. To address this gap, the research question in this dissertation was whether and how firms’ resources and internationalization strategies impacted the international location decisions of emerging market firms. To explore the research question, data were hand-collected from Indian software firms on their location decisions taken between April 2000 and March 2009. To analyze the multi-level longitudinal dataset, hierarchical linear modeling was used. …

Roof And Wall Vents Study Under Simulated Hurricane Winds, Peeyush S. Kawade Dec 2009

Roof And Wall Vents Study Under Simulated Hurricane Winds, Peeyush S. Kawade

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ventilation might seem like a minor consideration, but when properly installed, it can extend the life of the attic and roof structure of residential buildings saving huge dollar amounts in repair costs. The objectives of this study were to measure the wind effect on different kind of vents as the problem is vents are subjected to high wind loads during hurricane events and often fail causing water penetration and damage of interior contents. Wind-induced failure of rooftop vents during a hurricane may result in large openings in the roof that will allow water to penetrate into the building, a puncturing …

Does Hope Matter? The Influence Of Dispositional Hope On Persistence In A Developmental Writing Course, Stephen S. Madison Nov 2009

Does Hope Matter? The Influence Of Dispositional Hope On Persistence In A Developmental Writing Course, Stephen S. Madison

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine hope’s unique role, if any, in predicting persistence in a developmental writing course. Perceived academic self-efficacy was also included as a variable of interest for comparison because self-efficacy has been more widely studied than hope in terms of its non-cognitive role in predicting academic outcomes. A significant body of research indicates that self-efficacy influences academic motivation to persist and academic performance. Hope, however, is an emerging psychological construct in the study of non-cognitive factors that influence college outcomes and warrants further exploration in higher education. This study examined the predictive value of …

Think Before You Eat: Calories And Exercise Equivalents Presented On Menus At Point-Of-Choice, Charles Stuart Platkin Nov 2009

Think Before You Eat: Calories And Exercise Equivalents Presented On Menus At Point-Of-Choice, Charles Stuart Platkin

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although calorie information at the point-of-purchase at fast food restaurants is proposed as a method to decrease calorie choices and combat obesity, research results have been mixed. Much of the supportive research has weak methodology, and is limited. There is a demonstrated need to develop better techniques to assist consumers to make lower calorie food choices. Eating at fast food restaurants has been positively associated with weight gain. The current study explored the possibility of adding exercise equivalents (EE) (physical activity required to burn off the calories in the food), along with calorie information as a possible way to facilitate …

Physiological Performance Measures And Tolerance Limits Of Estuarine Indicator Species In South Florida, Pamela Marie Bachman Nov 2009

Physiological Performance Measures And Tolerance Limits Of Estuarine Indicator Species In South Florida, Pamela Marie Bachman

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Current water management practices in South Florida have negatively impacted many species inhabiting Florida Bay. Variable and high salinity has been identified as a key stressor in these estuaries. The comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP) includes water redistribution projects that will restore natural freshwater flows to northeastern Florida Bay. My studies focused on the following central theme and hypotheses: Biological performance measures (i.e., growth, reproduction, survival), behavior (i.e., habitat preference and locomotor behavior) and diversity of estuarine fish will be controlled by changes in salinity and water quality that will occur as a result of the restoration of freshwater flow …

Rigid And Non-Rigid Point-Based Medical Image Registration, Nestor Andres Parra Nov 2009

Rigid And Non-Rigid Point-Based Medical Image Registration, Nestor Andres Parra

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The primary goal of this dissertation is to develop point-based rigid and non-rigid image registration methods that have better accuracy than existing methods. We first present point-based PoIRe, which provides the framework for point-based global rigid registrations. It allows a choice of different search strategies including (a) branch-and-bound, (b) probabilistic hill-climbing, and (c) a novel hybrid method that takes advantage of the best characteristics of the other two methods. We use a robust similarity measure that is insensitive to noise, which is often introduced during feature extraction. We show the robustness of PoIRe using it to register images obtained with …

Aerodynamic Load Characteristics Evaluation And Tri-Axial Performance Testing On Fiber Reinforced Polymer Connections And Metal Fasteners To Promote Hurricane Damage Mitigation, Iván R. Canino-Vazquez Nov 2009

Aerodynamic Load Characteristics Evaluation And Tri-Axial Performance Testing On Fiber Reinforced Polymer Connections And Metal Fasteners To Promote Hurricane Damage Mitigation, Iván R. Canino-Vazquez

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Damages during extreme wind events highlight the weaknesses of mechanical fasteners at the roof-to-wall connections in residential timber frame buildings. The allowable capacity of the metal fasteners is based on results of unidirectional component testing that do not simulate realistic tri-axial aerodynamic loading effects. The first objective of this research was to simulate hurricane effects and study hurricane-structure interaction at full-scale, facilitating better understanding of the combined impacts of wind, rain, and debris on inter-component connections at spatial and temporal scales. The second objective was to evaluate the performance of a non-intrusive roof-to-wall connection system using fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) …

The Relationship Between Classroom Interactions And Exclusionary Discipline As A Social Practice: A Critical Microethnography, Debra M. Pane Phd Nov 2009

The Relationship Between Classroom Interactions And Exclusionary Discipline As A Social Practice: A Critical Microethnography, Debra M. Pane Phd

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Exclusionary school discipline results in students being removed from classrooms as a consequence of their disruptive behavior and may lead to subsequent suspension and/or expulsion. Literature documents that nondominant students, particularly Black males, are disproportionately impacted by exclusionary discipline, to the point that researchers from a variety of critical perspectives consider exclusionary school discipline an oppressive educational practice and condition. Little or no research examines specific teacher-student social interactions within classrooms that influence teachers’ decisions to use or not use exclusionary discipline. Therefore, this study set forth the central research question: In relation to classroom interactions in alternative education settings, …

Energy-Efficient Self-Organization Of Wireless Acoustic Sensor Networks For Ground Target Tracking, Malaka J. Walpola Nov 2009

Energy-Efficient Self-Organization Of Wireless Acoustic Sensor Networks For Ground Target Tracking, Malaka J. Walpola

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With the developments in computing and communication technologies, wireless sensor networks have become popular in wide range of application areas such as health, military, environment and habitant monitoring. Moreover, wireless acoustic sensor networks have been widely used for target tracking applications due to their passive nature, reliability and low cost. Traditionally, acoustic sensor arrays built in linear, circular or other regular shapes are used for tracking acoustic sources. The maintaining of relative geometry of the acoustic sensors in the array is vital for accurate target tracking, which greatly reduces the flexibility of the sensor network. To overcome this limitation, we …

Effective Reconfigurable Antenna Designs To Enhance Performance And Enable Wireless Powering, Shishir S. Punjala Nov 2009

Effective Reconfigurable Antenna Designs To Enhance Performance And Enable Wireless Powering, Shishir S. Punjala

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With the increase in traffic on the internet, there is a greater demand for wireless mobile and ubiquitous applications. These applications need antennas that are not only broadband, but can also work in different frequency spectrums. Even though there is a greater demand for such applications, it is still imperative to conserve power. Thus, there is a need to design multi-broadband antennas that do not use a lot of power. Reconfigurable antennas can work in different frequency spectrums as well as conserve power. The current designs of reconfigurable antennas work only in one band. There is a need to design …

A Methodological Framework For Modeling Pavement Maintenance Costs For Projects With Performance-Based Contracts, Kamalesh Panthi Nov 2009

A Methodological Framework For Modeling Pavement Maintenance Costs For Projects With Performance-Based Contracts, Kamalesh Panthi

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Performance-based maintenance contracts differ significantly from material and method-based contracts that have been traditionally used to maintain roads. Road agencies around the world have moved towards a performance-based contract approach because it offers several advantages like cost saving, better budgeting certainty, better customer satisfaction with better road services and conditions. Payments for the maintenance of road are explicitly linked to the contractor successfully meeting certain clearly defined minimum performance indicators in these contracts. Quantitative evaluation of the cost of performance-based contracts has several difficulties due to the complexity of the pavement deterioration process. Based on a probabilistic analysis of failures …

Efficient Storage And Domain-Specific Information Discovery On Semistructured Documents, Fernando R. Farfan Nov 2009

Efficient Storage And Domain-Specific Information Discovery On Semistructured Documents, Fernando R. Farfan

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The increasing amount of available semistructured data demands efficient mechanisms to store, process, and search an enormous corpus of data to encourage its global adoption. Current techniques to store semistructured documents either map them to relational databases, or use a combination of flat files and indexes. These two approaches result in a mismatch between the tree-structure of semistructured data and the access characteristics of the underlying storage devices. Furthermore, the inefficiency of XML parsing methods has slowed down the large-scale adoption of XML into actual system implementations. The recent development of lazy parsing techniques is a major step towards improving …

Estimation Of Ravine Sediment Production And Sediment Dynamics In The Lower Le Sueur River Watershed, Minnesota, Luam A. Azmera Nov 2009

Estimation Of Ravine Sediment Production And Sediment Dynamics In The Lower Le Sueur River Watershed, Minnesota, Luam A. Azmera

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study focuses on quantifying explicitly the sediment budget of deeply incised ravines in the lower Le Sueur River watershed, in southern Minnesota. High-rate-gully-erosion equations along with the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) were implemented in a numerical modeling approach that is based on a time-integration of the sediment balance equations. The model estimates the rates of ravine width and depth change and the amount of sediment periodically flushing from the ravines. Components of the sediment budget of the ravines were simulated with the model and results suggest that the ravine walls are the major sediment source in the ravines. …

Development Of A Hurricane-Resistant Roof-To-Wall Connection Using High-Performance Fiber Composites, Cetin Canbek

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Significant portion of losses in hurricanes occur due to a discontinuous load path and weak connections. The purpose of this study was to develop an innovative, efficient and non-intrusive roof-to-wall connection for wood-frame structures using high-performance fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composite materials.

The development of new connections was carried out at the component level tests. Initially the bond strength between FRP and wood interface was investigated. Subsequently, a progressive FRP tie development test was conducted and several alternatives were tested and the most feasible one was chosen.

The new FRP tie was then tested in a full-scale wood-frame structure to …

From Stability To Insurgency: The Root And Proximate Causes Of The September 2002 Civil War In Cote D'Ivoire, Bertin K. Kouadio Nov 2009

From Stability To Insurgency: The Root And Proximate Causes Of The September 2002 Civil War In Cote D'Ivoire, Bertin K. Kouadio

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation was an analysis of the root and proximate causes of the September 2002 civil war in Côte d’Ivoire. The central question of this study was: Why did Côte d’Ivoire, which was relatively stable under President Houphouët-Boigny, suddenly begin to experience political violence in the 1990s and an explosion in 2002? Côte d’Ivoire was an interesting case because it was stable for a long period of time, apparently making it an infertile ground for conflict. It was also interesting for comparative purposes because of the fact that several states in West Africa (for instance, Benin, Togo, and Ghana) have …

The Electoral Geography Of The Slovak Republic: A Comparison Of The 1994, 1998, And 2002 Parliamentary Elections, Zuzana Hlavacova

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In what can rightly be said to be one of the most dramatic geopolitical shifts in modern times, the collapse of communist regimes in Central Europe and the former Soviet Union brought about dramatic changes in the entire region. As a consequence, wide ranging political, economic, and social transformations have occurred in almost all of these countries since 1989. The Slovak Republic, as a newly democratic country, went through the establishment of the electoral and party systems that are the central mechanisms to the formation of almost all modern democratic governments. The primary research purpose of this dissertation was to …

Seed Dispersal And Reproduction Patterns Among Everglades Plants, Ronald E. Mossman Nov 2009

Seed Dispersal And Reproduction Patterns Among Everglades Plants, Ronald E. Mossman

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this study three aspects of sexual reproduction in Everglades plants were examined to more clearly understand seed dispersal and the allocation of resources to sexual reproduction— spatial dispersal process, temporal dispersal of seeds (seedbank), and germination patterns in the dominant species, sawgrass (Cladium jamaicense). Community assembly rules for fruit dispersal were deduced by analysis of functional traits associated with this process. Seedbank ecology was investigated by monitoring emergence of germinants from sawgrass soil samples held under varying water depths to determine the fate of dispersed seeds. Fine-scale study of sawgrass fruits yielded information on contributions to variation in sexually …

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Coral reefs are in decline worldwide and coral disease is a significant contributing factor. However, etiologies of coral diseases are still not well understood. In contrast with the Caribbean, extremely little is known about coral diseases in the Philippines. In 2005, off Southeast Negros Island, Philippines, I investigated relationships between environmental parameters and prevalence of the two most common coral diseases, ulcerative white spot (UWS) and massive Porites growth anomalies (MPGAs). Samples were collected along a disease prevalence gradient 40.5 km long. Principal component analyses showed prevalence of MPGAs was positively correlated with water column nitrogen, organic carbon of surface …

Phonics Instruction Using Pseudowords For Success In Phonetic Decoding, Jessica M. Cardenas Nov 2009

Phonics Instruction Using Pseudowords For Success In Phonetic Decoding, Jessica M. Cardenas

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examined a Pseudoword Phonics Curriculum to determine if this form of instruction would increase students’ decoding skills compared to typical real-word phonics instruction. In typical phonics instruction, children learn to decode familiar words which allow them to draw on their prior knowledge of how to pronounce the word and may detract from learning decoding skills. By using pseudowords during phonics instruction, students may learn more decoding skills because they are unfamiliar with the “words” and therefore cannot draw on memory for how to pronounce the word. It was hypothesized that students who learn phonics with pseudowords will learn …

Interactions Between Endothelin Receptor B And Transcription Factors Sox10 And Pax3 In The Melanocyte Lineage, Marcia Lowenstein Nov 2009

Interactions Between Endothelin Receptor B And Transcription Factors Sox10 And Pax3 In The Melanocyte Lineage, Marcia Lowenstein

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Genetic interactions that underlie developmental processes such as cell differentiation and pattern formation are complex and difficult to elucidate. Neural Crest (NC) cells and their derivatives offer an optimal system in which to probe for these complex interactions as they acquire different cell fates and constitute a variety of structures. The transcription factors Sox10 and Pax3 as well as the transmembrane receptor Endothelin receptor b (Ednrb) are temporally and spatially co-expressed early in NC cells and mutations in these genes lead to similar hypopigmentation phenotypes due to a reduced number of NC-derived melanocyte precursors, the melanoblasts. The goal of this …

Diversity Of Hymenoptera, Cultivated Plants And Management Practices In Home Garden Agroecosystems, Kyrgyz Republic, Robin Currey Nov 2009

Diversity Of Hymenoptera, Cultivated Plants And Management Practices In Home Garden Agroecosystems, Kyrgyz Republic, Robin Currey

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Pollination-dependent fruit trees grown in home gardens play an important role in the agricultural based economy of Central Asian countries, yet little is known about the status of pollinator communities, the cultivated plant composition or the factors that influence management practices in Kyrgyz home garden agroecosystems. As agricultural systems are human created and managed, a logical approach to their study blends anthropological and ecological methods, an ethnoecological approach. Over three years, I investigated how species richness and abundance of Hymenoptera, cultivated plants, and home garden management were related using quantitative and qualitative methods in the Issyk-kul Man and Biosphere reserve. …

The Effectiveness Of Explicit Individualized Phonemic Awareness Instruction By A Speech-Language Pathologist To Preschool Children With Phonological Speech Disorders, Susan L. Nullman Nov 2009

The Effectiveness Of Explicit Individualized Phonemic Awareness Instruction By A Speech-Language Pathologist To Preschool Children With Phonological Speech Disorders, Susan L. Nullman

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the effects of an explicit individualized phonemic awareness intervention administered by a speech-language pathologist to 4 prekindergarten children with phonological speech sound disorders. Research has demonstrated that children with moderate-severe expressive phonological disorders are at-risk for poor literacy development because they often concurrently exhibit weaknesses in the development of phonological awareness skills (Rvachew, Ohberg, Grawburg, & Heyding, 2003). The research design chosen for this study was a single subject multiple probe design across subjects. After stable baseline measures, the participants received explicit instruction in each of the three phases separately and sequentially. Dependent measures included same-day tests …
