Vhdl Design And Simulation For Embedded Zerotree Wavelet Quantisation, Hung Huynh Jan 2000

Vhdl Design And Simulation For Embedded Zerotree Wavelet Quantisation, Hung Huynh

Theses : Honours

This thesis discusses a highly effective still image compression algorithm – The Embedded Zerotree Wavelets coding technique, as it is called. This technique is simple but achieves a remarkable result. The image is wavelet-transformed, symbolically coded and successive quantised, therefore the compression and transmission/storage saving can be achieved by utilising the structure of zerotree. The algorithm was first proposed by Jerome M. Shapiro in 1993, however to minimise the memory usage and speeding up the EZW processor, a Depth First Search method is used to transverse across the image rather than Breadth First Search method as initially discussed in Shapiro's …

The Effects Of Incorporating A Word Processor Into A Writing Program: Seven Individual Case Studies, Natalie Beck Jan 2000

The Effects Of Incorporating A Word Processor Into A Writing Program: Seven Individual Case Studies, Natalie Beck

Theses : Honours

Writing is a "complex interplay of social, physical, and cognitive factors" (Daiute, 1985a, p.1) and an essential part of every young child's school life. However, "every school has at least a few children who can be classified as non-writers" (Aumack, 1985, p.46). Some children are often inhibited and "frustrated when they attempt to express themselves with pencil and paper'' (Aumack, 1985, p.46) and are put off by the thought of writing, erasing and rewriting, thus producing "children who do not want to write" (Aumack, 1985. p.46). In response to these statements, this qualitative study examined the effects of incorporating a …

The Impact Of Pressure Groups On The Western Australian School Education Bill 1999 : A Case Study, Sharan Kraemer Jan 2000

The Impact Of Pressure Groups On The Western Australian School Education Bill 1999 : A Case Study, Sharan Kraemer

Theses : Honours

This study examines the influence which pressure groups, unelected, unrepresentative groups, exert on the legislative process. This thesis studies the issue in relation to the Western Australian School Education Bill 1999, and the action of four pressure groups- the Aboriginal legal Service of Western Australia, the Disability Services Commission, the Home Based Learning Network and the Western Australian Council of State Schools Organisations. The re-writing of the School Education Bill1999 presented an opportunity to study pressure group activity against the background of two unusual circumstances: the first being that the updating of the seventy year old Act was the occasion …

Representations Of Class, Social Realism And Region In "Eleven Months In Bunbury" By James Ricks, Joshua J. K. Ledger Jan 2000

Representations Of Class, Social Realism And Region In "Eleven Months In Bunbury" By James Ricks, Joshua J. K. Ledger

Theses : Honours

The aim of this thesis is to explore representations of class, social realism and region in Eleven months in Bunbury by James Ricks. This novel stands outside dominant literary theory in its representations of class, realism and regionalism. It also presents opportunities to consider ideology and class through the eyes of a working class person, in the language of the class that it depicts. Thus it speaks to a class which rarely has its point of view and lives represented in conventional literature. It is therefore a useful literary and social document.

Consumer Perceptions Of The Internet As A Product And Service Infomation Source, Kevin Nguy

Theses : Honours

The Internet is fast becoming an important product and service information source. Consumers are using the medium for gathering information on products and services. The Internet has unique characteristics, which makes it a powerful medium for communication. However, what is the perception of the product and service information on the Internet? This study aims to contribute to an understanding of consumers' perception of product and service information on the Internet. The research is exploratory in nature. Consumers' perceptions towards the Internet as a product and service information source were measured along a construct relating to perceptions towards the Internet information. …

A Study Of Australian Managers' Perceptions Of The Internet, Roman Vargha Jan 2000

A Study Of Australian Managers' Perceptions Of The Internet, Roman Vargha

Theses : Honours

Despite its young age the Internet has grown to become a significant new medium for businesses and their customers. The existing literature suggests that some businesses are not going on-line whilst others are: embracing the new technology, but as yet little research has been conducted as to the reasons for this difference in take-up rate. Even less research has been conducted from an Australian perspective, with most research originating in the United States. This preliminary study explored the differing perceptions of eight Perth-based managers of businesses that are on-line compared to those that are not on-line. Of particular interest was …

A Queer Love : The Gay Male In Young Adult Literature, Skot John Arbery Jan 2000

A Queer Love : The Gay Male In Young Adult Literature, Skot John Arbery

Theses : Honours

The purpose of my thesis· A Queer Love: The Gay Male in Young Adult Literature -is to offer an analysis of seven young adult novels that incorporate the construction and representation of while male homosexuality. I intend to explore what it is that can be learnt from these texts about 'being gay'. It is my assertion that I will be able to show that, although taboos have been shifted in young adult literature to allow the exploration of issues relating to gay adolescence, that which is condoned as acceptable 'gay behavior' remains restricted. I propose that in order for gay …

A Cross-Institutional Evaluation On The Supply And Demand Of The Security Function, Shane J. Norton Jan 2000

A Cross-Institutional Evaluation On The Supply And Demand Of The Security Function, Shane J. Norton

Theses : Honours

The security industry has undergone dramatic changes over the last twenty years due to a continually increasing demand for security services and products. Internal organisational pressure to the security function has forced a rethink in the way security managers conduct business. Traditionally, security managers have only been aware of the level of service that customers receive by procedures these managers initiated. The availability of a comprehensive study detailing customer attitudes towards security supply is useful for understanding the security demand from the end user perspective, and providing knowledge to fine-tune the service. A security manager with realistic and recent end …

Temas De Muerte E Identidad En Pasos Y Pasajero, Brian Taylor Jan 2000

Temas De Muerte E Identidad En Pasos Y Pasajero, Brian Taylor

Theses : Honours

Pasos y Pasajeros marked a transition from Uslar Pietri’s previous stories. Whilst retaining his accustomed rural geographical environment and civil war historical environment for some stories, he introduces us to urban landscapes and contemporary settings in many others. The anonymity of time and places in earlier works, gives way to defined places, periods and social environments, perhaps reflecting the evolution of Venezuela from a subsistence agrarian economy to a fledgling urban society, enabled by the exploitation of the country's oil reserves. In the works of Uslar Pietri, several themes predominate. Death and identity are two themes explored in this thesis, …

A Diet Study Of Australia's Most Critically Endangered Mammal, Gilbert's Potoroo, Potorous Gilbertii (Marsupialia : Potoroidae), Vinh Nguyen

Theses : Honours

After 125 years of presumed extinction, Gilbert's Potoroo (Potorous gilbertii) was rediscovered in 1994 in Two Peoples Bay Nature Reserve, Albany. As only one population is known to exist, conservation is of prime importance. Faecal analysis was used to examine the diet of P. gilbertii. The species was found to be predominantly mycophagous (fungus-feeding) with invertebrate and plant matter fanning only a small part of its diet. Fungal material made up more than 90% of faecal matter throughout the year. A total of 44 fungal spore types were discerned. Of these, five were tentatively identified to species level with the …

The outcomes for the NTC and SOS in the Learning Area of …

Macroeconomic Announcements, Volatility And Interrelationships: An Examination Of The Uk Bond And Stock Markets, Bradley Jones Jan 2000

Macroeconomic Announcements, Volatility And Interrelationships: An Examination Of The Uk Bond And Stock Markets, Bradley Jones

Theses : Honours

This study covers considerable ground and touches on a range of issues in a rigorous investigation of the intraday and end-of-day behaviour of I JK stock index and interest rate futures contracts. Firstly, the paper uses S-minute data in an initial examination of the response of the Short Sterling, Long Gilt and FTSEI00 to the release of macroeconomic announcements (assisted with the application of GMM). Secondly, in an analysis of intraday patterns in returns and volatility a GARCII(I,I) framework is employed, so that further inferences are made robust to time-varying variance. Finally, the paper draws upon some of the latest …

The Perceptions Of Male And Female Western Australian Adolescents In Relation To Body Image And Smoking, Mary Edwards Jan 2000

The Perceptions Of Male And Female Western Australian Adolescents In Relation To Body Image And Smoking, Mary Edwards

Theses : Honours

Although the numbers of adult smokers has declined, numbers of adolescent smokers have not, with females outnumbering males. Research has indicated that adolescent females have higher levels of body image dissatisfaction than males. This dissatisfaction is mostly with regard to weight, which suggests a possible association between female adolescents smoking and weight control. A study of American adolescents (Camp, Klesges & Relyea, 1993) found that adolescent females were more likely to perceive that smoking is a method of weight control and to use smoking to control their weight than adolescent males. This present study investigated the perceptions of625 Western Australian …

The Applicability Of Stable Carbon Isotope Analysis To Measure The Water Use Efficiency Of Melaleuca Preissiana Populations On The Swan Coastal Plain, Western Australia, Hayley E. Valentine Jan 2000

The Applicability Of Stable Carbon Isotope Analysis To Measure The Water Use Efficiency Of Melaleuca Preissiana Populations On The Swan Coastal Plain, Western Australia, Hayley E. Valentine

Theses : Honours

Stable carbon isotope (δ13C) analysis is a tool used to understand the water use efficiency (WUE) of plants. The advantage of measuring the carbon isotope composition in plant tissue over other measures of WUE (such as the ratio of photosynthesis to transpiration) is that it provides a time-integrated, rather than an instantaneous measure of plant-water relations. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the applicability of using δ13C analysis in natural populations of the fringing tree Melaleuca preissiana based on short and long term sampling methods. There were three components to this study; a controlled, …

A Qualitative Investigation Into The Use Of The Internet In The Information Search Phase Of The Buying Decision Process, Kiaran Geen Jan 2000

A Qualitative Investigation Into The Use Of The Internet In The Information Search Phase Of The Buying Decision Process, Kiaran Geen

Theses : Honours

There have been a significant number of reports suggesting that the Internet will radically change accepted business and customer relationships. The literature to date has focused on the phenomenon of the Internet as well as more specific aspects such as its interactivity, how to market a Web site and security issues. There appears to be very little research on how consumer behaviour theories relate to the Internet. This study explored the extent to which the Internet is in the information search phase of the buying decision process, amongst Internet literate consumers. A qualitative investigation using virtual focus groups was conducted. …

The Use Of Stable Isotopic Signatures Of Marine Biota To Map Sewage Effluent Disposed Into The Marine Environment, Adam Gartner Jan 2000

The Use Of Stable Isotopic Signatures Of Marine Biota To Map Sewage Effluent Disposed Into The Marine Environment, Adam Gartner

Theses : Honours

Recent work indicates that nitrogen stable isotopic signatures of aquatic biota can be used to link nutrient inputs in the marine environment to terrestrial sources. While this technique of tracing nutrients has been shown to be effective in environments that are not nutrient limited, it has not been proved that this method is effective in oligotrophic environments. This study examined whether nitrogen stable isotopic signatures of marine biota can be used to trace the distribution of sewage effluent in highly mixed, nitrogen limited waters, by examining the δ15N values of marine biota situated close to and distant from …

Lower Secondary Student Attitudes Towards Social Studies In A Catholic School, Ekaterina Thiveos

Theses : Honours

This case study examined lower secondary student attitudes towards social studies and identified the factors that influenced attitudes in one Catholic secondary school located in the Perth metropolitan area. A total of 4 75 students were enrolled in Years 8 to 10 at the school in 1999. A modified version of Student Attitudes Towards Social Studies (Moroz 1996) questionnaire with 94 items, was utilised to gauge secondary student attitudes towards the learning area. A total of 421 lower secondary students participated in the survey. The data was analysed using the statistical software package SPSS 9. 0 for Windows, where descriptive …

Derailed : The Social, Economic And Political Implications Of The Closure Of The Westrail Midland Workshops, Lyla D. Elliott Jan 2000

Derailed : The Social, Economic And Political Implications Of The Closure Of The Westrail Midland Workshops, Lyla D. Elliott

Theses : Honours

The Westrail Midland Workshops had serviced the Western Australian Government Railway fleet for 90 years when they were closed by the Court Government in 1994. As the State's largest and best equipped industrial establishment employing over 900 workers, the announcement of the closure was unexpected and controversial. The research questions asked in this thesis are: Why did the Workshops close? What were the economic and political issues involved? What attempts were made to modernise the Workshops and improve efficiency, and what were the social and economic effects on the workers? The event took place at a time of changing ethos …

Molecular Investigations In The Role Of The Galk1 Gene In Galactokinase Deficiency, Michael L. Hunter Jan 2000

Molecular Investigations In The Role Of The Galk1 Gene In Galactokinase Deficiency, Michael L. Hunter

Theses : Honours

Galactokinase deficiency is an autosomal-recessive inborn error of galactose metabolism whose major clinical manifestation is the development of cataracts during the first months of life. This metabolic disorder is caused by defects in the first enzyme of the Leloir pathway, galactokinase, encoded by the gene GALK1 on chromosome 17q24. Despite the identification of a number of conserved domains in GALK1, understanding of the functional significance of these regions and the molecular basis of the disorder is limited. This is largely due to the rarity of the disease and the fact that the small number of GALK1 mutations identified to-date are …

Identification Of Wetland Plant Hydrotypes On The Swan Coastal Plain Western Australia, Robyn Loomes Jan 2000

Identification Of Wetland Plant Hydrotypes On The Swan Coastal Plain Western Australia, Robyn Loomes

Theses : Honours

The hydrology of 19 Swan Coastal Plain wetlands was described in relation to its influence on the composition and stn1cturc of wetland vegetation. Sixty species were identified as ‘wetland’ plants. The water depth ranges, or hydrological envelopes, of these species were determined and species grouped together based on the water regimes they experienced. Descriptions of wetland hydrology suggested that the surface and groundwater levels of the majority of study wetlands had declined in both the short (3-5 years) and long-term (20-50 years). Wetlands belonging to the Bibra Suite did not follow this trend as surface water levels either increased or …

Jack Maggs : A Differend Convict(Ion) By Peter Carey, Timothy D. Langley Jan 2000

Jack Maggs : A Differend Convict(Ion) By Peter Carey, Timothy D. Langley

Theses : Honours

This thesis is an analysis of Peter Carey's novel Jack Maggs and its attempt at writing back to Charles Dickens' Great Expectations. I will analyse the (de)construction of language games between Jack Maggs and Great Expectations; show how Carey as a post-colonial settler writer writes back to the centre, to Dickens' text as a canonical Victorian novel, through intergrating the very notion of the Victorian novel, and in his own terms giving the convict a "history". I will explore how Carey writes competing language games of "science" and "narrative" (as identified by Lyotard) within Jack Maggs and how they produce …

An Analysis Of Option Pricing Under Systematic Consumption Risk Using Garch, Alex Georgievski Jan 2000

An Analysis Of Option Pricing Under Systematic Consumption Risk Using Garch, Alex Georgievski

Theses : Honours

We aim to test two things. Firstly, whether accounting for the persistence in volatility decreases the errors between the option prices implied from our models and the observed option prices and secondly, whether the pricing errors are reduced when you allow for the fact that consumption is correlated with returns on the underlying asset. Three option pricing models are developed and tested. 1-The Black and Scholes option pricing model, 2-The GARCH (1,1) model under risk neutrality and 3- The GARCH (1,1) model under systematic consumption risk, using recent daily data on traded options on the FTSE 100 share price index. …

Detecting The Cause Of Acidification At A Seasonal Wetland On The Swan Coastal Plain, Western Australia, Through Laboratory And Field Mesocosm Experiments, Kelli O'Neill Jan 2000

Detecting The Cause Of Acidification At A Seasonal Wetland On The Swan Coastal Plain, Western Australia, Through Laboratory And Field Mesocosm Experiments, Kelli O'Neill

Theses : Honours

Acidification (pH< 4.5) was detected at Lake Jandabup, a shallow, seasonal wetland on the Swan Coastal Plain. Western Australia. Concern has been raised because populations of invertebrate species have declined or disappeared since acidification, potentially compromising the status of the lake as a nature reserve. The Jake bed is underlain with pyrite (feS2), which oxidises when dry producing sulfates, hydrogen ions and ferrous iron. Being seasonal, Lake Jandabup would be expected to be naturally acidic, but the more recent trend has been a prolonged (> 1 year) and extreme acidification (pH < 4.0). This study endeavoured to explain why the Jake may have undergone an acidic change, why it may have recovered and whether it will happen again. It was hypothesised that the acidification may have been caused by prolonged drying of the lake causing excessive oxidation of pyrite which produced more acid than the wetland could neutralise through buffering. The hypothesis was tested through laboratory and field experiments. The laboratory experiment involved taking intact sediment cores from around the lake, drying them for various lengths of time, and measuring pH, sulfate, total iron, total alkalinity and total aridity upon rehydration. Dried sediment from diatomaceous earth under Fe(OH)3 precipitate gave the lowest pH of less than 4.0. High sulfates, low alkalinity and low pH were interrelated. While drying in its own right produced low pH, generally there was no significant difference between drying times for release of selected variables. The field experiment involved the establishment of small in situ mesocosms to test for the effects …

Analysis Of An Ecotourist Based Management Strategy: Crystal Cave, Yanchep National Park, Western Australia, Charles Priddle Jan 2000

Analysis Of An Ecotourist Based Management Strategy: Crystal Cave, Yanchep National Park, Western Australia, Charles Priddle

Theses : Honours

Ecotourism has quickly become one of the most influential and prominent terms used within the tourism industry today. With its many obscure definitions ecotourism has also been used to support a great number of unsustainable tourist developments. This study examined whether ecotourism had the ability to ensure ecological and financial sustainability through increased public exposure and appreciation to an ecologically sensitive area. One place in which this notion is being put to the test is in Crystal Cave, a popular tourist destination inside Yanchep National Park, 50 kilometres north of Perth. This cave is named after the beautiful reflections off …

Attitudes Of Lower Secondary School Students Toward Social Studies At An Independent School : A Case Study, Diane M. Hobbs Jan 2000

Attitudes Of Lower Secondary School Students Toward Social Studies At An Independent School : A Case Study, Diane M. Hobbs

Theses : Honours

There is a dearth of research on student attitudes toward social studies, especially in Western Australian secondary schools. The purpose of this case study was twofold. Firstly it was to determine the attitudes of lower secondary school students toward social studies at one Independent high school in the Perth metropolitan area. Secondly, it was to investigate the factors that influence student attitudes toward social studies. The case study school was selected as a convenience sample. A total of 203 students from Years 8, 9, and 10 completed a questionnaire designed to determine attitudes toward social studies and to identify factors …

Dead Mothers, Lonely Daughters : Negotiating Intersubjective Space In Young Adult Fiction, Anna-Claire Walsh Jan 2000

Dead Mothers, Lonely Daughters : Negotiating Intersubjective Space In Young Adult Fiction, Anna-Claire Walsh

Theses : Honours

This thesis examines the effect of maternal absence on the ability of three central female characters to develop intersubjective relationships in three novels for young adults. The theoretical framework is Jessica Benjamin's psychoanalytic theory of 'intersubjectivity' which seeks to transcend split complementarities such as active-passive creating a model that synthesises traditionally opposed terms. Benjamin situates maternal subjectivity as the foundation from which a baby's identity is constructed and attributes women with both active and passive qualities. The relationship between mother and infant consequently acts as a paradigm for understanding the interaction between adult subjects in later life. Chapter One introduces …

The Feasibility Of A Flexibly Delivered Professional Development Program For Teachers In Road Safety Education, Vanessa Hille Jan 2000

The Feasibility Of A Flexibly Delivered Professional Development Program For Teachers In Road Safety Education, Vanessa Hille

Theses : Honours

School-based prevention education programs can contribute to a reduction in childhood road trauma by increasing students' knowledge, attitudes and skills. Professional development (PO) for teachers is needed to ensure effective implementation of health curricula. Access to conventional workshop PD is restricted by obstacles such as time, cost and lack of resources. A flexibly delivered PD program would allow teachers to study when, where and how they prefer. The purpose of this study was to examine the feasibility of a flexibly delivered PD program for teachers in road safety education. The target population was teachers from Western Australian primary schools. A …
