Modulation Of Apolipoprotein E Expression And Glial Activation In Mouse Olfactory Bulb During Estrous Cycle: An Immunohistochemical Study, Matthew Kircher Jan 2002

Modulation Of Apolipoprotein E Expression And Glial Activation In Mouse Olfactory Bulb During Estrous Cycle: An Immunohistochemical Study, Matthew Kircher

Masters Theses

Estrogen (E2) plasma levels fluctuate as a function of estrous cycling in the mouse. Apolipoprotein E (apoE) mRNA has been shown to increase in both hippocampal astrocytes and microglia during proestrus when plasma estrogen levels are high. The current study was designed to evaluate apoE localization and glial activation in mouse olfactory bulb (OB) as a function of the estrous cycle. In the rat OB, estrogen receptor β (ERβ) is present in the glomerular and external plexiform layers, but not the internal plexiform and granule cell layers. Normal female mice 2-3 months old at the start of the study were …

Predictive Validity Of Measures Of Phonological Awareness On First Grade Reading Achievement, Jennifer Hervey Jan 2002

Predictive Validity Of Measures Of Phonological Awareness On First Grade Reading Achievement, Jennifer Hervey

Masters Theses

The purposes of this study were to evaluate the degree to which three measures of phonological awareness (Test of Phonological Awareness (TOPA), Torgesen & Bryant, 1994; Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS), Kaminski & Good, 1996; Read America Diagnostic Tests, McGuinness & McGuinness, 1998) correlate with each other and with selected measures of reading skills (Brigance Diagnostic Inventory of Basic Skills, Brigance, 1976, 1977; Woodcock Diagnostic Reading Battery (WDRB), Woodcock, 1997). The study also evaluated which of the measures of phonological awareness best predicts reading skills in a first grade population. The current study is an extension of …

A Ghost In Europe: Right-Wing Extremism And Its Metamorphoses, Raluca Viviana Stireanu Jan 2002

A Ghost In Europe: Right-Wing Extremism And Its Metamorphoses, Raluca Viviana Stireanu

Masters Theses

The main assumption of this thesis is that fascism is not an historical feature, nor a geographical one. The premises for the rise of fascism are beyond time and space; it can develop anywhere, anytime, in a certain context and under some conditions. These context and these conditions are to be explained and described in this thesis. I will compare the features of fascism in inter-war Europe with those of neo-fascism, and I will also compare the features of Eastern European fascims with those of the Western Europe; the main reason for these comparisons is that it was argued that …

Phylogenetics Of Lymnaeidae (Mollusca: Gastropoda) With Emphasis On The Evolution Of Susceptibility To Fascioloides Magna Infection, Sarah Renee Joyce Jan 2002

Phylogenetics Of Lymnaeidae (Mollusca: Gastropoda) With Emphasis On The Evolution Of Susceptibility To Fascioloides Magna Infection, Sarah Renee Joyce

Masters Theses

Snails in Lymnaeidae serve as intermediate hosts in the transmission of many trematode species, including Fascioloides magna that is responsible for disease and death in domestic livestock in North America. Previous classifications of lymnaeid snails have relied primarily on morphological characters that exhibit high levels of homoplasy; thereby, impeding a sound assessment of relationships in this group. The present study provides a phylogenetic hypothesis for lymnaeid snails employing sequences from the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of nrDNA, and addresses the evolution of susceptibility to Fascioloides infection in lymnaeid snails. The final data set, comprising ten species of lymnaeid snails …

Aging Coyotes Using Dental Characteristics, Michelle Maher Jan 2002

Aging Coyotes Using Dental Characteristics, Michelle Maher

Masters Theses

The accepted methods of age determination in the coyote (Canis latrans) are either highly subjective and unquantifiable or expensive and require the extraction of the canine tooth. Since neither of these methods are ideal, their limitations have impeded research on this species. Therefore, it was my objective to (1) develop and test the accuracy and precision of a descriptive key based on tooth wear patterns on the lower canine tooth, (2) develop and test the reliability of multiple regression models for aging coyotes using measurements from extracted teeth, and (3) suggest criteria for improving the consistency of results …

Reproductive Biology Of Stylisma Pickeringii (Convolvulaceae), An Endangered Plant Of Illinois Sand Prairies, Brent L. Todd

Masters Theses

The sand prairie is a unique ecosystem in the state of Illinois, being the habitat for many interesting plants and animals not found elsewhere in the state. One such plant is the state-endangered Stylisma pickeringii (Torr. ex M.A. Curtis) Gray var. pattersoni (Fern. & Schub.) Myint (Convolvulaceae), also known as Patterson's bindweed or Patterson's dawn flower. It currently is found in only three Illinois counties—Cass, Henderson, and Mason. Presently, two of the three populations of S. pickeringii are located on private lands. Very little information is known about the reproductive biology of S. pickeringii var. pattersoni. Thus, the purpose of …

Gas Exchange And Yields Of Bt Resistant Maize (Zea Mays L.) With European Corn Borer (Ostrinia Nubilalis, Hubner) Infestation, Shad Mallady Jan 2002

Gas Exchange And Yields Of Bt Resistant Maize (Zea Mays L.) With European Corn Borer (Ostrinia Nubilalis, Hubner) Infestation, Shad Mallady

Masters Theses

Seed companies have transgenic maize (Zea mays L.) hybrids resistant to European corn borer (ECB) [Ostrinia nubilalis (Hübner)]. However, the impact of this Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) gene on other plant processes is not understood. In 1997 and 1999, a study at Central Golden Harvest Research in Clinton, IL focused on how the Bt gene affects gas exchange and yields of maize with and without ECB infestation. Bt and non-Bt isogenic pairs were planted with or without nets and/or insecticides to eliminate natural infestation of ECB, and with or without manual infestation of ECB. Photosynthesis and transpiration …

Colony Composition And Demographics Of Beavers In Illinois, Stanley T. Mctaggart

Masters Theses

Beavers (Castor canadensis) have been extensively studied throughout North America, but little research has been conducted on this species in Illinois and the Midwest. Beavers exhibit wide variations in colony composition and demographics over their broad geographic range, so regional research is important for sound management. The objectives of this study were to investigate the: (1) typical composition of beaver colonies in Illinois; (2) reproductive potential of female beavers in Illinois; (3) sex-age composition of beaver populations in Illinois; and (4) efficacy of night-vision surveys versus removal trapping for estimating colony size. This study was conducted during the 1999-00 and …

Cyclomorphosis Of Daphnia Lumholtzi In Response To Spatial Heterogeneity In Lake Taylorville, Karen K. Schnake Jan 2002

Cyclomorphosis Of Daphnia Lumholtzi In Response To Spatial Heterogeneity In Lake Taylorville, Karen K. Schnake

Masters Theses

Reservoir zonation occurs longitudinally as water enters from a stream into an impoundment. Inflow areas (or riverine zones) are typified by high flow rate and shallow depth whereas areas near the dam (lacustrine zones) characteristically have decreased flow and greater depth. In a typical reservoir, abiotic and biotic variables change somewhat predictably along a continuum from the riverine, through a transitional and into a lacustrine zone which can have a significant affect on the biota. Daphnia lumholtzi, a cladoceran which exhibits extreme cyclomorphosis, is an exotic species introduced to North America within the past twenty-five years. I examined the morphology …

Searching For The Hero's Code: Questioning (White) Hero Formation In Contemporary American Film, Amanda D. Mckay Jan 2002

Searching For The Hero's Code: Questioning (White) Hero Formation In Contemporary American Film, Amanda D. Mckay

Masters Theses

The desire for heroism never wavers in the imaginations of the movie-going public. When we go to the movies, we long to see a strong character, poised to save the world (tights and cape optional, of course). However, we rarely question what the hero looks like. Hollywood perpetuates an archaic form of heroism because that is what the audience has formed long ago in their collective imagination. Much of American culture is generated by the desire to see self-starters making it in the direst of conditions.

With such a narrow construction of heroism, Hollywood has become void of equal representation …

American Kitsch: Dreams Of Vegas And Apollo Beyond Aporias, Daniel Gerling Jan 2002

American Kitsch: Dreams Of Vegas And Apollo Beyond Aporias, Daniel Gerling

Masters Theses

Aside from a recently published compendium of happy stories by Dan Rather and a few real estate agencies in Florida, the American Dream has been considered dead. The most common poison deemed responsible for this death has been, not the lack of success, but, the "kitschiness" of the reward. Postwar novels such as Henry Miller's The Air-Conditioned Nightmare and Edward Albee's play The American Dream declared that the Dream was no longer genuine and, therefore, no longer functional or valid.

Horatio Alger's blueprint for American prosperity began to lose its momentum to a generation of skeptics who rejected the idea …

Phylogeography And Genetic Diversity Of The Seal Salamander (Desmognathus Monticola), Erin D. Casey Jan 2002

Phylogeography And Genetic Diversity Of The Seal Salamander (Desmognathus Monticola), Erin D. Casey

Masters Theses

Phylogeography is defined as the spatial distribution of taxa with respect to geologic and geographic events. It is well documented that the distributions of many taxa have been affected by glacial events during the Pleistocene Era. The patterns generated can be very complex and result from shifts in climate and/or vegetation.

The Seal salamander, (Desmognathus monticola), is one species that still has questions pertaining to its phylogeography. The range of this species extends from southwestern Pennsylvania to northern Alabama and Georgia, with a highly disjunct, state-endangered population in the Red Hills of Alabama. The main goal of this study …

Asset-Base: New Reserve Requirements For A New Banking Industry, James Robert Bryans Jan 2002

Asset-Base: New Reserve Requirements For A New Banking Industry, James Robert Bryans

Masters Theses

This paper discusses a regulatory plan known as asset-based reserve requirements. By examining the history of reserve requirements in the United States and of current regulatory proposals and practices, I argue that a system of asset-based reserve requirements may provide a useful, though not often considered alternative to the current structures of liability based reserve requirements and capital requirements. Required reserves based on assets provide the Federal Reserve with a powerful, versatile, and adaptable policy tool for monetary policy. Additionally, they ensure risk-assessment, reduce the moral hazard problem associated with deposit insurance, and when applied to all fmancial institutions create …

The Effects Of Habitat Fragmentation On Fish Developmental Stability, Matthew W. Gosses Jan 2002

The Effects Of Habitat Fragmentation On Fish Developmental Stability, Matthew W. Gosses

Masters Theses

In nature, organisms exist in less than ideal conditions making stress a constant factor throughout their life. These stressful environments may disturb developmental processes, causing long-term, detrimental changes to an organism expressed as bilateral variation in morphology or fluctuating asymmetry (FA). Fluctuating asymmetry has been shown to be associated with accidents during morphogenesis due to environmental factors and hence is considered a measure of developmental instability.

One environmental stressor that may affect aquatic organisms is stream habitat fragmentation. Stream habitat fragmentation is the lack of connectivity between upstream and downstream populations or sites. Stream fragmentation can create distinct patches of …

Eastern Illinois University female collegiate athletes in six different sports, track (n=15), softball (n=16), soccer (n=11), tennis (n=3), volleyball (n=5), and rugby (n=19) were given the Athletic Identity Measurement …

Birth Of A Paradigm: Digital Technology And Its Effect On Literary Studies, Chad Michael Verbais Jan 2002

Birth Of A Paradigm: Digital Technology And Its Effect On Literary Studies, Chad Michael Verbais

Masters Theses

Digital technology is changing the landscape of literary studies. In essence, the proliferation of computer technology and hypertext is forcing literary scholars to look at how the expanded role of the visual in our society is influencing the way we read and disseminate texts, especially hypertexts, while they also come to a better understanding of the role of the reader in a digital environment and the overall value of electronic literature. Literary studies is witnessing the birth of a new paradigm through digital technology in textual production and dissemination that will not only raise new questions, but further examine age-old …

Women's Heart Of Sorrow: Versions Of The Truyen Kieu In The Works Of Duong Thu Huong And Le Ly Hayslip, Vi Tran Jan 2002

Women's Heart Of Sorrow: Versions Of The Truyen Kieu In The Works Of Duong Thu Huong And Le Ly Hayslip, Vi Tran

Masters Theses

Nguyen Du's Truyen Kieu or Tale of Kieu has arguably provided a life model for Vietnamese females. The poem's influence extends in important ways to contemporary Vietnamese writers as well, including those as politically and artistically diverse as Duong Thu Huong and Le Ly Hayslip. In Novel Without a Name, Paradise of the Blind and Memories of a Pure Spring, Duong Thu Huong transforms the terms of Nguyen Du's poem to those of Vietnam during its revolutionary period and today. As an overseas Vietnamese who had earlier experienced prostitution and the moral chaos of war, Le Ly Hayslip's …

Learning Styles Of Teachers And Usage Of Technology, Kiranmayi Padmaraju Jan 2002

Learning Styles Of Teachers And Usage Of Technology, Kiranmayi Padmaraju

Masters Theses

'Every child can learn' is the mantra being advocated today. The Multiple Intelligences theory put forth by Gardner has revolutionized the perceptions of learning styles. Currently more and more teachers are accepting the reality that children learn differently and in this context, their own learning style should not be a limiting factor for using multiple modes of instruction in their classrooms. A correlational study will be done to determine if there is a relationship between learning styles of the teacher and technology usage, particularly computer-based technology. The subjects in this study will be inservice teachers (N = 30). The MIDAS …
