Campus Climate For Gay, Lesbian, And Bisexual Students: A Survey Of Faculty, Staff And Students, Amanda D. Barton

Masters Theses

This study examined the campus climate for gay, lesbian, and bisexual students at Eastern Illinois University. The population (N=210) was studied to investigate three hypotheses: 1) there are no differences between the variables of gender, campus involvement, race and university status in relation to attitudes towards homosexuals; 2) there are no differences among students, and faculty/staff/administration in the type of involvement each would extend to homosexual students under duress; and 3) there are no differences among students, faculty, and staff in their willingness to be educated and their levels of education about homosexual issues. The population of students and faculty, …

A Radical Cure: Thomas Dimsdale, Radical Republicanism, And The Montana Vigilantes During The Civil War, Gregory Aydt

Masters Theses

In late December of 1863, a group of men in the fledgling Idaho Territory formed a vigilance committee to rid the area of criminals. In little more than a month, the committee hanged twenty-one men, including the area's sheriff, Henry Plummer. This work deals with these events which took place in and around the mining camps of Bannack and Virginia City in Idaho Territory, now in the state of Montana, during the winter of 1863-64. It attempts to answer the following questions: What circumstances led to this significant outbreak of lynch law? Who decided that a vigilance committee was the …

Door To Door, Bryan Levek Jan 1999

Door To Door, Bryan Levek

Masters Theses

My creative thesis consists of four short stories and my author's introduction to them.

In my introduction, I discuss my primary literary influences; not only the author's whose approaches to short fiction that I share, but also those I feel indifferent towards. Sherwood Anderson's Winesburg, Ohio is admirable for its sketches of common people and ordinary life events. James Joyce is highlighted as the originator of literary epiphany, a moment of revelation or profound insight, and both A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Dubliners provide examples of the device. Hemingway's stripped down language is appreciated for …

Demonstrating Loss Of Control Over Technology: A Narrative Criticism, David P. Farlow Jan 1999

Demonstrating Loss Of Control Over Technology: A Narrative Criticism, David P. Farlow

Masters Theses

This study focuses on how individuals through their talk about computer mediated technology demonstrate a loss of control over that technology. Three separate computer mediated communication classes were involved in this study through the use of autoethnographies. The students in all three classes were asked at the beginning of the semester to keep field notes on their experiences with the technology. At the end of the semester the students were to summarize and report their experiences.

Because of the qualitative nature of the data, a narrative criticism of the stories students told about their experiences seemed to provide the most …

Symbol Of Youth, Savior From Aging: Dialectical Relationship Between American Attitudes On Vitamin E And Toward Aging, Thalia Rios Jan 1999

Symbol Of Youth, Savior From Aging: Dialectical Relationship Between American Attitudes On Vitamin E And Toward Aging, Thalia Rios

Masters Theses

This study explores the dialectical relationship between American attitudes about Vitamin E and American attitudes toward aging. Through an examination of this dialectic, I will demonstrate that Vitamin E's history has contributed greatly to current American discourses on aging. For many Americans, the vitamin symbolizes youth and health because they perceive that its use can prevent or slow the aging process. During the 1990s, many Americans' early negative perceptions of Vitamin E as a quack substance have changed, partly due to recent research advances and studies that have further elucidated its powerful antioxidant function against harmful free radicals. Meanwhile, many …

Fast ForWord training was completed when the subject reached at least 90 percent completion on five of the seven training exercises or when it was determined by the Fast ForWord professional that the child had received maximum benefit …

Investigating The Allosteric Behavior Of Malate Dehydrogenase From Escherichia Coli, Eman M. Ghanem Jan 1999

Investigating The Allosteric Behavior Of Malate Dehydrogenase From Escherichia Coli, Eman M. Ghanem

Masters Theses

Regulatory mechanisms of malate dehydrogenase from E.coli (eMDH) involving NADH as an allosteric effector were investigated. The reaction was studied in both directions: malate oxidation and oxaloacetate reduction. When malate was the variable substrate, a plot of rate against substrate concentration was sigmoidal in the presence of 0.065 mM NADH, which indicates the presence of an allosteric site for NADH on the enzyme. Binding of NADH at the allosteric site causes conformational changes in the active site and, thereby, changes the catalytic activity of the enzyme. An increase in Km value, from 1.3 to 3.9 mM malate was observed, …

Alarm Calls Affect Foraging Behavior In Eastern Chipmunks (Tamias Striatus), Jessica K. Baack Jan 1999

Alarm Calls Affect Foraging Behavior In Eastern Chipmunks (Tamias Striatus), Jessica K. Baack

Masters Theses

I used playback experiments to test whether alarm calls affected the foraging behavior of Eastern chipmunks (Tamias striatus). I subjected chipmunks, foraging at artificial feeding stations, to three playback treatments (silent, control noise, and alarm call) and examined changes in vigilant and foraging behavior. Chipmunks responded to alarm calls with a greater degree and duration of vigilant behavior, such as look-ups and alert postures. Chipmunks also ran a shorter distance to cover, ran more directly to cover, and took longer to re-emerge from the burrow after hearing an alarm call. Alarm calls caused individuals to spend more time …

Investigations Of A Phenanthroline-Based Azo Dye Ligand And Of Re(I) And Ru(Ii) Complexes Based On This Ligand, Yan Zhang

Masters Theses

A 1,10-phenanthroline based azo dye ligand, phen-azo-phenol, produced by diazotizing 5-amino-1,10-phenanthroline (5-NH2-phen) and then coupling to phenol, and several transition metal complexes containing this ligand, have been synthesized and characterized. The phen-azo-phenol ligands attach to Re(I) and Ru(II) through the phenanthroline linkage to form stable polypyridyl complexes. These complexes show greatly enhanced absorption properties in the visible region when compared to the well-known analogous bipyridine and phenanthroline containing complexes. The visible light absorption of the free ligand and the complexes containing this ligand are greatly affected by the position of the deprotonation equilibrium of the -OH group on …

But more importantly, this thesis …

Connecting Threads: Quilts As Symbols In Adolescent Literature, Anita L. Beaman Jan 1999

Connecting Threads: Quilts As Symbols In Adolescent Literature, Anita L. Beaman

Masters Theses

Quilting is a functional art form that has been practiced by generations of American women. In the past, quilting provided women with an outlet for personal expression. Learning to quilt acted as a rite of passage from childhood to adulthood. Quilting provided women with a means of recording their personal histories as well as an opportunity for socializing: quilting bees were social occasions that allowed women to gather together and establish connections with each other as they connected their quilt pieces.

Feminist history has recognized the quilt as an important symbol for women. Quilts represent strength, resiliency and the creative …

The Economics Of Wage Discrimination Of Non-Whites From 1960 To 1990, Royal E. Washington Jan 1999

The Economics Of Wage Discrimination Of Non-Whites From 1960 To 1990, Royal E. Washington

Masters Theses

White people earn more money than non-whites. This is true in most cases even if non-white people perform the same job as white people. Are there reasons for these differences? The purpose of this paper is to discover what those reasons are for the differences in wages and to attempt to discover how much of the difference is really discrimination. Any inequalities that are unexplained may be considered by the author to be discriminatory. Therefore, the hypothesis for this paper is: Income differences between whites and non-whites may be attributed in part to race discrimination.

The statistical method used will …

Openness, Convergence, And Economic Growth In Asian Economies, Lih-Jen Lin Jan 1999

Masters Theses

Openness offers countries opportunities to trade with the outside world, and stimulates growth through easier access to new technologies and skills. In order to verify the effects of openness on economic growth in Asian economies, this study uses the ratio of foreign direct investment to GDP, and the ratio of the sum of imports and exports to GDP as proxies of openness.

This study begins with the hypothesis that opening domestic markets will have a significant positive impact on Asian economic growth, and the lower the starting level of real per capita GDP, relative to the long-term position, the faster …

‘Two Are Better Than One;’ Adam And Eve's Symbiotic Marriage In John Milton's Paradise Lost, Jeffrey Paul Pietruszynski Jan 1999

‘Two Are Better Than One;’ Adam And Eve's Symbiotic Marriage In John Milton's Paradise Lost, Jeffrey Paul Pietruszynski

Masters Theses

Although much has been written on the roles of Adam and Eve created by John Milton in Paradise Lost, the critics, oddly enough, overlook the dependency created by the roles. This paper extends these roles further, explaining that Milton wanted to show that the roles of man and woman, husband and wife, combine to create a unit dependent on one another other for survival. As Adam himself states, when they are separated, husband and wife are vulnerable to the dangers of evil. However, together, they form a single unit, able to accomplish any task, epitomizing the symbolic relationship described in …

Effects Of Interparental Conflict Tactic Styles On The Psychological Adjustment Of College Undergraduates, Jodell D. Bauer

Masters Theses

Past research has examined the effect of the level of interparental conflict on the psychological adjustment of children and young adult offspring. Research has suggested that higher levels of conflict in intact, separated, and divorced homes have negative effects on the psychological adjustment of children and young adults. Recent studies have further examined interparental conflict by examining the styles with which parents resolve or cope with conflict and it's effect on their children. This study assessed the effect of different interparental conflict styles of mother and of father on college-age offspring. The three styles examined were negotiation, psychological aggression and …
