James Joyce's Ulysses, the most influential novel of the twentieth century, has often been criticized for its fragmentation and complexity. Impenetrable to some readers, misunderstood by others, Ulysses bears within its eighteen episodes a symmetry of subject and form that at once clarifies and multiplies the meanings to be found there. Richard Ellmann calls Joyce's theory of art "the perception of coincidence," a theory best exemplified by "Wandering Rocks," the central episode of Ulysses. Competitive effects of weed infestations in soybean fields can severely reduce yields. Noncompetitive factors (allelopathy) may also be involved. Soybeans (Glycine max (L.) Merrill, Asgrow A 3127 mid group 3) show a marked reduction in growth due to root exudation, leaf leachate and total plant extracts from white-flowered morning glory (Ipomoea lacunosa L.).

Some Effects Of Simulated Acid Rain On Cool Season Turfgrasses, Robert C. Morrow

Six varieties of cool season turfgrasses were exposed to simulated acid rainfall with treatments consisting of a sulfuric acid solution, a nitric acid solution, and a 50-50 mixture of both. Each solution was used to make "acid rain" of pHs 3.0, 2.5, 2.0, and 1.5.

Height measurements showed decreases in growth throughout the experiment for all treatments except the nitric and 50-50 acid treatments at pHs of 2.0 and 1.5, which maintain fairly constant growth. Analysis of nitrate, phosphorous, and potassium levels in the soil indicated heavy leaching of the nitrates and potassium from most soil samples, which probably account …

Residual Phytotoxicity Of Mon-097 In Sludge Enriched Soils, Jennifer A. Woods

Aerobically and anaerobically digested sludges were added to soil at concentrations of 0, 1, 5, and 10% (v/v). Dry weights of Avena sativa var. Noble plants, harvested 28 days after planting, were greater with increased sludge concentrations. Plant dry weights were consistently greater with aerobically than with anaerobically digested sludge. MON-097, an acetanilide herbicide, was applied to these soil/sludge mixtures at concentrations of 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32 ppm. Residual phytotoxicity of MON-097 was not significantly affected by sludge concentration. These results suggest that increased concentrations of sludge in the soil do not contribute to detoxification …

Belmont Prairie is located in Downers Grove, DuPage County, Illinois, and is one of the few preserves of a native tall grass prairie. It is located in the Morainal section of the Northeastern Morainal Division, and harbors over 100 species of native prairie plants which are typical of the community type. Three vegetation zones were sampled for species composition and both frequency and relative frequency. These areas are as follows: Dry mesic upland area, sedge meadow, and transitional area.

Charleston, Illinois, a city located in east-central Illinois, recently implemented a new concept in a raw water system. Due to storage capacity-sedimentation problems in the old Lake Charleston-Embarras River raw water supply, the Charleston Pump Storage Reservoir was constructed. The new system involved building a dike separating the Lake Charleston impoundment from the Embarras River. Water to increase the storage capacity of the reservoir can now be selectively pumped into the impoundment from the river.

Raw water quality in the reservoir was monitored on a weekly basis for a full year from August, 1981 to August, 1982. The levels of …

The microwave spectrum of the weakly bound propyne-HF/DF complex in the region between 6 and 16 GHz was analyzed. The spectrum was characteristic of a distorted T-shaped asymmetric top exhibiting torsional splitting caused by a low barrier to internal rotation of the methyl top relative to the propyne-HF frame. Deuterium substitution of HF confirms that the acid proton of HF is located between the F atom and the propyne triple bond. The spectroscopic constants given below are consistent with the fluorine atom being displaced toward the methyl group from a line perpendicular to and bisecting the propyne triple bond, suggesting …

Colin Clark's theory of inflation has had a profound effect on present-day economic theory concerning taxation policy. While his belief that inflation occurred when all tax revenues exceeded 25 percent of national income was rejected by his contemporaries in the 1940's, supply-side economists incorporate Clark's theory into their proposals for curing the unemployment and inflation of the 1970's and 1980's. These proposals gained popular support and resulted in the election of President Ronald Reagan who implemented such proposals. The purpose of this study is to determine the veracity of Clark's theory.

Dichlorocarbonyltris(triphenylphosphine)ruthenium (II), Ru(CO)(Cl)₂(Ph₃P)₃, was prepared by modification of a procedure reported to yield the dimer, (Ru(CO)(Cl)₂(Ph₃P)₂)₂. Dissolution of Ru(CO)(Cl)₂(Ph₃P)₃ in acetonitrile resulted in loss of triphenylphosphine and dimer formation.

Metathesis of Ru(CO)(Cl)₂(Ph₃P)₃ in hexane with excess tertiary phosphine yielded complexes of the type Ru(CO)(Cl)₂-(R₂R′P)₃ where R₂R′P is Ph₂MeP or PhMe₂P. ¹H and ³¹p nmr spectra of these materials showed that two phosphines are …

The Rhizobium trifolii polysaccharides from SU843 and mutants--HC843(pBR1AN), HC843, 8002--in which the sym plasmid is replaced, absent, or mutated by transposon Tn5 were isolated. The surface polysaccharides of genetically altered mutants were compared quantitatively and qualitatively with one another and with the parent strain. The interpretation of these results is discussed in relation to the function of Rhizobium surface polysaccharides in the symbiotic process. o-Anisic acid and o-ethoxybenzoic acid were reacted with pyridine hydriodide in pyridine at 115° for 3 days to yield 81% and 18% salicylic acid respectively. o-Anisic acid with KI in pyridine at 115° for 3 days gave 58% salicylic acid while o-anisic acid with LiI·3H₂O in pyridine at 85° for 3 days gave 54% salicylic acid. p-Anisic acid and o-phenoxybenzoic acid did not undergo cleavage reactions with pyridine hydriodide under similar conditions.

A group of school personnel with Cooperative Purchasing experience was secured from the prescribed geographical area. These people, the experts, were asked to respond to a three round Delphi survey. The experts were to formulate their opinion from their own experiences and by reviewing the composite results of the previous Delphi round.

A faculty handbook had been issued previously, but it was outdated, lacking in detail, and had not been distributed for almost ten years. The high school had a recently revised faculty handbook, but the distinct differences between the high school and the lower grades would not permit the use of the same handbook by all teachers in the district.
