Development Of A Public Relations Program For The Newman Community Unit School District #303, Charles E. White

Masters Theses

Public relations is an important part of any school district's total program. To be most effective, a written, planned public relations program should be used. This field experience deals with the development of a written, planned public relations program for the Newman Community Unit School District #303 in Newman, Illinois.

The author attempts to provide information that could be used by other educators who wish to develop a public relations program for their school district. Reasons why educators must provide information about the schools to the public and involve the public with the schools are discussed. The reasons for developing …

The Perception Of Coincidence: Artistic Symmetry In The "Wandering Rocks" Episode Of James Joyce's Ulysses, James A. Scruton Jan 1983

The Perception Of Coincidence: Artistic Symmetry In The "Wandering Rocks" Episode Of James Joyce's Ulysses, James A. Scruton

Masters Theses

James Joyce's Ulysses, the most influential novel of the twentieth century, has often been criticized for its fragmentation and complexity. Impenetrable to some readers, misunderstood by others, Ulysses bears within its eighteen episodes a symmetry of subject and form that at once clarifies and multiplies the meanings to be found there. Richard Ellmann calls Joyce's theory of art "the perception of coincidence," a theory best exemplified by "Wandering Rocks," the central episode of Ulysses. The use of "symmetrical coincidence" in ''Wandering Rocks" can be seen in two ways: 1)the internal structure of the episode, and 2)its location among …

Noncompetitive Effects Of Morning Glory On Growth Of Soybeans, D. R. La Bonte Jan 1983

Noncompetitive Effects Of Morning Glory On Growth Of Soybeans, D. R. La Bonte

Masters Theses

Competitive effects of weed infestations in soybean fields can severely reduce yields. Noncompetitive factors (allelopathy) may also be involved. Soybeans (Glycine max (L.) Merrill, Asgrow A 3127 mid group 3) show a marked reduction in growth due to root exudation, leaf leachate and total plant extracts from white-flowered morning glory (Ipomoea lacunosa L.).

Some Effects Of Simulated Acid Rain On Cool Season Turfgrasses, Robert C. Morrow Jan 1983

Some Effects Of Simulated Acid Rain On Cool Season Turfgrasses, Robert C. Morrow

Masters Theses

Six varieties of cool season turfgrasses were exposed to simulated acid rainfall with treatments consisting of a sulfuric acid solution, a nitric acid solution, and a 50-50 mixture of both. Each solution was used to make "acid rain" of pHs 3.0, 2.5, 2.0, and 1.5.

Height measurements showed decreases in growth throughout the experiment for all treatments except the nitric and 50-50 acid treatments at pHs of 2.0 and 1.5, which maintain fairly constant growth. Analysis of nitrate, phosphorous, and potassium levels in the soil indicated heavy leaching of the nitrates and potassium from most soil samples, which probably account …

Post Object Art And Sociological Influences On The Internal Processes Of Art Making, Steve Havens Jan 1983

Post Object Art And Sociological Influences On The Internal Processes Of Art Making, Steve Havens

Masters Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to discuss how external sociological factors inevitably have a profound effect on current art.

Much great art has been created against the flow of what is critically "popular" or "fashionable," but as these external factors become more prominent so the art work produced inevitably suffers.

The exhibition of Frank Stella's black and aluminum paintings at the turn of the 60's, in my own opinion, provided something of a landmark in the history of art. These works, in all their stark, flat, geometric nakedness denied both "form" and "content." They bare no illusions, no mythology, …

Dreamworlds And The Art Of Illustration, Donna Crotchett Jan 1983

Dreamworlds And The Art Of Illustration, Donna Crotchett

Masters Theses

While I was growing up, illustrations made deep impressions upon me. An illustration is a picture that explains and adds interest to the written part of a printed work such as a book. Often overlooked by others, for various reasons, this means of communication played a significant part in my life and art.

The history of illustration is a history of men and women, serious artists, who have produced an enormous amount of high-quality work. Many of their illustrations had their origins in fine art such as early religious painting and mythological themes. A large number of fine artists have …

Residual Phytotoxicity Of Mon-097 In Sludge Enriched Soils, Jennifer A. Woods Jan 1983

Residual Phytotoxicity Of Mon-097 In Sludge Enriched Soils, Jennifer A. Woods

Masters Theses

Aerobically and anaerobically digested sludges were added to soil at concentrations of 0, 1, 5, and 10% (v/v). Dry weights of Avena sativa var. Noble plants, harvested 28 days after planting, were greater with increased sludge concentrations. Plant dry weights were consistently greater with aerobically than with anaerobically digested sludge. MON-097, an acetanilide herbicide, was applied to these soil/sludge mixtures at concentrations of 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32 ppm. Residual phytotoxicity of MON-097 was not significantly affected by sludge concentration. These results suggest that increased concentrations of sludge in the soil do not contribute to detoxification …

It is located in the Morainal section of the Northeastern Morainal Division, and harbors over 100 species of native prairie plants which are typical of the community type. Three vegetation zones were sampled for species composition and both frequency and relative frequency. These areas are as follows: Dry mesic upland area, sedge meadow, and transitional area.

The upland dry mesic zone had diverse vegetation including forb and grass species such as Parthenium integrifolium, Silphium laciniatum, …

Raw Water Quality In The New Charleston, Illinois Pump Storage Reservoir, Kevin G. Lookis Jan 1983

Raw Water Quality In The New Charleston, Illinois Pump Storage Reservoir, Kevin G. Lookis

Masters Theses

Charleston, Illinois, a city located in east-central Illinois, recently implemented a new concept in a raw water system. Due to storage capacity-sedimentation problems in the old Lake Charleston-Embarras River raw water supply, the Charleston Pump Storage Reservoir was constructed. The new system involved building a dike separating the Lake Charleston impoundment from the Embarras River. Water to increase the storage capacity of the reservoir can now be selectively pumped into the impoundment from the river.

Raw water quality in the reservoir was monitored on a weekly basis for a full year from August, 1981 to August, 1982. The levels of …

Internal Rotation Effects And Nuclear Hyperfine Structure In The Microwave Spectrum Of Propyne-Hf, Roger E. Bumgarner Jan 1983

Internal Rotation Effects And Nuclear Hyperfine Structure In The Microwave Spectrum Of Propyne-Hf, Roger E. Bumgarner

Masters Theses

The microwave spectrum of the weakly bound propyne-HF/DF complex in the region between 6 and 16 GHz was analyzed. The spectrum was characteristic of a distorted T-shaped asymmetric top exhibiting torsional splitting caused by a low barrier to internal rotation of the methyl top relative to the propyne-HF frame. Deuterium substitution of HF confirms that the acid proton of HF is located between the F atom and the propyne triple bond. The spectroscopic constants given below are consistent with the fluorine atom being displaced toward the methyl group from a line perpendicular to and bisecting the propyne triple bond, suggesting …

American Arts And Artists Of The Twentieth Century: 1900-1941, Janet M. Ryan Jan 1983

American Arts And Artists Of The Twentieth Century: 1900-1941, Janet M. Ryan

Masters Theses

"American Arts and Artists of the Twentieth Century: 1900-1941" is a prepared course of study developed for the high-school or junior-college-level humanities student. One to three literary, musical, and visual artists were selected to represent a decade. Because of the amount of material to be covered, and because of the limited time in which to present it, the first four decades of the twentieth century are considered.

The study consists of fifty, one-hour sessions which are divided into two units: "The First Two Decades: 1900-1918"; and "Between the Wars: 1919-1941." Each unit is made up of individual lessons devoted to …

Inflation And Taxable Capacity: Some Recent Evidence, Barbara Allison Haney-Powell Jan 1983

Inflation And Taxable Capacity: Some Recent Evidence, Barbara Allison Haney-Powell

Masters Theses

Colin Clark's theory of inflation has had a profound effect on present-day economic theory concerning taxation policy. While his belief that inflation occurred when all tax revenues exceeded 25 percent of national income was rejected by his contemporaries in the 1940's, supply-side economists incorporate Clark's theory into their proposals for curing the unemployment and inflation of the 1970's and 1980's. These proposals gained popular support and resulted in the election of President Ronald Reagan who implemented such proposals. The purpose of this study is to determine the veracity of Clark's theory.

Clark's theory was tested in this study with the …

Preparation And Characterization Of Tertiary Phosphine Carbonyl Ruthenium (0) Complexes, Joann C. Bady Jan 1983

Preparation And Characterization Of Tertiary Phosphine Carbonyl Ruthenium (0) Complexes, Joann C. Bady

Masters Theses

Dichlorocarbonyltris(triphenylphosphine)ruthenium (II), Ru(CO)(Cl)2(Ph3P)3, was prepared by modification of a procedure reported to yield the dimer, (Ru(CO)(Cl)2(Ph3P)2)2. Dissolution of Ru(CO)(Cl)2(Ph3P)3 in acetonitrile resulted in loss of triphenylphosphine and dimer formation.

Metathesis of Ru(CO)(Cl)2(Ph3P)3 in hexane with excess tertiary phosphine yielded complexes of the type Ru(CO)(Cl)2-(R2R′P)3 where R2R′P is Ph2MeP or PhMe2P. 1H and 31p nmr spectra of these materials showed that two phosphines are …

Analysis Of The Surface Polysaccharides Of R. Trifolii Su843 And Its Sym Plasmid Alterated Mutants, Jauh-Lin Duh

Masters Theses

The Rhizobium trifolii polysaccharides from SU843 and mutants--HC843(pBR1AN), HC843, 8002--in which the sym plasmid is replaced, absent, or mutated by transposon Tn5 were isolated. The surface polysaccharides of genetically altered mutants were compared quantitatively and qualitatively with one another and with the parent strain. The interpretation of these results is discussed in relation to the function of Rhizobium surface polysaccharides in the symbiotic process. The symbiotic ability of SU843 and mutant strains is as follows: (a) SU843, nod+, fix+; (b) mutant 8002, roa+ (still attaches to root hair), hac-, nod-; (c) …

The purpose of the study was to investigate the degree of stress principals perceive in the work environment. Specifically this study compared the actual perceived stress experienced on the job with what principals deem to be a reasonable amount of stress. The study was predicated on the research findings that indicate that the amount of stress is relative to a given individual as opposed to being an absolute quality.

A review of the research and literature revealed that few publications have been targeted towards stress and the educational administrator. The implications of job related stress, as it impacts on the …

Revision Of The Argenta-Oreana Faculty Handbook, Grades K-8, Ralph J. Lutz Jr. Jan 1983

Revision Of The Argenta-Oreana Faculty Handbook, Grades K-8, Ralph J. Lutz Jr.

Masters Theses

The development of a faculty handbook for the Argenta-Oreana School District grades K-8 was the subject of this field study. A faculty handbook had been issued previously, but it was outdated, lacking in detail, and had not been distributed for almost ten years. The high school had a recently revised faculty handbook, but the distinct differences between the high school and the lower grades would not permit the use of the same handbook by all teachers in the district.

The creation of this handbook was brought about mainly to answer the numerous questions the faculty had about board policies, grading, …
