Skeleton In The Trash Can, Stacey Knight-Davis Oct 2009

Skeleton In The Trash Can, Stacey Knight-Davis

Stacey Knight-Davis

Booth Library added several anatomical models to the Ballenger Teachers Center circulating collection in 2005. One of the challenges resulting from purchasing these models was finding suitable containers for shelving and circulation. This poster reports on the condition and use of the models four years later.

Federated Search Falls Short, Stacey Knight-Davis, Sarah L. Johnson, Karen Whisler

Sarah L. Johnson

After adopting a federated search product and featuring it prominently on the library's Web site in 2006, Booth Library greatly reduced the visibility of the product in 2008 due to poor performance and lower than expected use. This session provides evidence from actual practice on the use of federated searching.

Attachment Avoidance Predicts Inflammatory Responses To Marital Conflict, Jean-Phillipe Gouin, Ronald Glaser, Timothy J. Loving, William B. Malarkey, Jeffrey R. Stowell, Carrie Houts, Janice K. Kiecolt-Glaser Oct 2009

Attachment Avoidance Predicts Inflammatory Responses To Marital Conflict, Jean-Phillipe Gouin, Ronald Glaser, Timothy J. Loving, William B. Malarkey, Jeffrey R. Stowell, Carrie Houts, Janice K. Kiecolt-Glaser

Jeffrey R. Stowell

Marital stress has been associated with immune dysregulation, including increased production of interleukin-6 (IL-6). Attachment style, one’s expectations about the availability and responsiveness of others in intimate relationships, appears to influence physiological stress reactivity and thus could influence inflammatory responses to marital conflict. Thirty-five couples were invited for two 24-hour admissions to a hospital research unit. The first visit included a structured social support interaction, while the second visit comprised the discussion of a marital disagreement. A mixed effect within-subject repeated measure model indicated that attachment avoidance significantly influenced IL-6 production during the conflict visit but not during the social …

Harmonic Functions On R-Covered Foliations And Group Actions On The Circle, Sergio Fenley, Renato Feres, Kamlesh Parwani Jul 2009

Harmonic Functions On R-Covered Foliations And Group Actions On The Circle, Sergio Fenley, Renato Feres, Kamlesh Parwani

Kamlesh Parwani

Let (M,F) be a compact codimension-one foliated manifold whose leaves are equipped with Riemannian metrics, and consider continuous functions on M that are harmonic along the leaves of F. If every such function is constant on leaves we say that (M,F) has the Liouville property. Our main result is that codimension-one foliated bundles over compact negatively curved manifolds satisfy the Liouville property. Related results for R-covered foliations, as well as for discrete group actions and discrete harmonic functions, are also established.

Comparative Vegetative Anatomy And Systematics Of Laeliinae (Orchidaceae), William Louis Stern, Barbara S. Carlsward May 2009

Comparative Vegetative Anatomy And Systematics Of Laeliinae (Orchidaceae), William Louis Stern, Barbara S. Carlsward

Barbara S. Carlsward

Laeliinae are one of the most prominent orchid subtribes, with c. 40 genera and nearly 1500 species, and contain a disparate group of taxa with widely varying morphological features. There does not appear to be a complex of characters to which one can refer in order to delineate the subtribe as a whole. Thus, it was thought that vegetative anatomy might provide clues to the monophyly of the group. The microscopic structure of the leaves, stems and roots of representatives of most of the genera was studied. It was concluded that the anatomy lacks overall uniformity and that vegetative characters …

Aod Prevention In A Consensus Building Environment, Charles G. Eberly Feb 2009

Aod Prevention In A Consensus Building Environment, Charles G. Eberly

Charles G. Eberly

This paper is a proposal to carry out a systematic program evaluation of the Sigma Phi Epsilon EDGE New Member Program, and was submitted to the Department of Education for funding in February 2009. The letter I received from the DOE indicated that my proposal did not fully meet the criteria for the grant competition since the study included students from many campuses rather than being focused on prevention programming for just one campus. The proposal does, however, provide evidence that new member education on prevention among fraternity men within six weeks of their joining an organization is promising. Compare …

A Plotless Density Estimator Based On The Asymptotic Limit Of Ordered Distance Estimation Values, Barry J. Kronenfeld Jan 2009

A Plotless Density Estimator Based On The Asymptotic Limit Of Ordered Distance Estimation Values, Barry J. Kronenfeld

Barry J. Kronenfeld

Estimation of tree density from point-tree distances is an attractive option for quick inventory of new sites, but estimators that are unbiased in clustered and dispersed situations have not been found. Noting that bias of an estimator derived from distances to the kth nearest neighbor from a random point tends to decrease with increasing k, a method is proposed for estimating the limit of an asymptotic function through a set of ordered distance estimators. A standard asymptotic model is derived from the limiting case of a clustered distribution. The proposed estimator is evaluated against 13 types of simulated generating processes, …

Evaluation Of Glyphosate-Tolerant Soybean Cultivars For Resistance To Bacterial Pustule, Lopa Goradia, Glen Hartman, Steven L. Daniel Jan 2009

Evaluation Of Glyphosate-Tolerant Soybean Cultivars For Resistance To Bacterial Pustule, Lopa Goradia, Glen Hartman, Steven L. Daniel

Steven L. Daniel

Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. glycines causes bacterial pustule of soybean, which is a common disease in many soybean-growing areas of the world and is controlled by a single recessive gene (rxp gene) commonly found in many conventional glyphosate-sensitive soybean cultivars. Since glyphosate-tolerant cultivars are commonly planted today, there has been no information about whether these new cultivars have bacterial pustule resistance. The goal of this study was to screen glyphosate-tolerant soybean cultivars for resistance to X. axonopodis pv. glycines. Three experiments were completed to evaluate resistance. In experiment 1, 525 commercial glyphosate-tolerant cultivars from 2001 were inoculated with X. axonopodis pv. …

Investigation Of Insect Visits To Flowers Of Stylisma Pickeringii (Patterson Bindweed), An Endangered Plant Of Illinois Sand Prairies, A. E. Claerbout, H. R. Owen, Janice M. Coons, B. L. Todd Jan 2009

Investigation Of Insect Visits To Flowers Of Stylisma Pickeringii (Patterson Bindweed), An Endangered Plant Of Illinois Sand Prairies, A. E. Claerbout, H. R. Owen, Janice M. Coons, B. L. Todd

Janice M. Coons

Little is known about the reproductive biology of Stylisma pickeringii var. pattersonii, an endangered plant in Illinois occurring in only three counties (Cass, Henderson, and Mason). The objective of this study was to estimate flower densities and temporal (time of day and seasonal) differences in insect visitation to flowers of S. pickeringii in 2002 for native populations in Henderson and Mason Counties. A 50 m transect was located where S. pickeringii was most abundant and quadrats (0.25 m2) were placed on alternate sides of the tape measure at every meter at random distances from the transect. The number of flowers …

Vegetative Anatomy And Systematics Of Triphorinae (Orchidaceae), Barbara S. Carlsward, William Louis Stern Jan 2009

Vegetative Anatomy And Systematics Of Triphorinae (Orchidaceae), Barbara S. Carlsward, William Louis Stern

Barbara S. Carlsward

Triphorinae represents a group of three anatomically simple genera, the structural features of which are unspecialized. The anomocytic stomatal pattern occurs in all genera; it predominates in Triphora . A foliar hypodermis, sclerenchyma, fibre bundles and stegmata are absent. The mesophyll is homogeneous. The exodermal and endodermal cells in the roots are entirely thin-walled and tilosomes are absent. However, there are anatomical modifications that appear to be unique: root hairs in Monophyllorchis are borne on velamenal buttresses and, in Psilochilus , they arise endogenously. In the root vascular system of Psilochilus , the metaxylem occurs as a circumferential band. The …

Botany At Eastern Illinois University, Marissa C. Jernegan, Nancy E. Coutant, Janice M. Coons

Janice M. Coons

Eastern Illinois University was established in 1899, and from its beginning the importance of the botanical sciences was recognized. Two terms of botany were required for the four year program. Dr. Otis W. Caldwell, a botanist, was one of the original faculty members. He taught all of the biology courses and initiated the acquisition of a greenhouse. Caldwell was the first in a series of talented and dedicated botany professors including Edgar N. Transeau, Ernest L. Stover, Hiram F. Thut and John E. Ebinger. These and many other professors incorporated a field component into almost all classes. This dedication to …

Behavioral Explanations Underlying The Lack Of Trap Effectiveness For Small-Scale Management Of Japanese Beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae), Paul V. Switzer, Patrick C. Enstrom, Carissa A. Schoenick Jan 2009

Behavioral Explanations Underlying The Lack Of Trap Effectiveness For Small-Scale Management Of Japanese Beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae), Paul V. Switzer, Patrick C. Enstrom, Carissa A. Schoenick

Paul V. Switzer

Traps containing a combination floral and synthetic pheromone lure are used to monitor and manage Japanese beetles, Popillia japonica Newman (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae). One key factor limiting trap effectiveness for beetle control is the "trap spillover" phenomenon, in which the trap attracts beetles without capturing them, resulting in increased damage to surrounding host plants. We investigated the mechanisms underlying trap spillover by conducting two studies in a soybean field in east central Illinois. In the first study, we set up trap stations for 1 d and compared the sex, size, and egg load (for females) of beetles caught in the traps …

Sucrose Phosphate Synthase Expression Influences Poplar Phenology, Thomas Canam, Ji-Young Park, Kyu-Young Kang, Faride Unda, Shawn D. Mansfield Jan 2009

Sucrose Phosphate Synthase Expression Influences Poplar Phenology, Thomas Canam, Ji-Young Park, Kyu-Young Kang, Faride Unda, Shawn D. Mansfield

Thomas Canam

The objective of this study was to manipulate the intracellular pools of sucrose, and investigate its role in regulating plant growth, phenology (leaf senescence and bud break) and fibre development. This objective was achieved by differentially expressing an Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana L. Heynh.) sucrose phosphate synthase (SPS) gene in hybrid poplar (Populus alba · Populus grandidentata Michx.), a model system for tree biology with substantial industrial relevance in the context of short rotation forestry and a target bioenergy crop. Phenotypic differences were evident in the transgenic trees, as both the timing of bud flush and leaf senescence were altered compared …

Believing In Both Genetic Determinism And Behavioral Action: A Materialist Framework And Implications, Celeste Condit, Marita Gronnvoll, Jamie Landau, Lijiang Shen, Lanelle Wright, Tina M. Harris

Marita Gronnvoll

A disparity exists between studies reporting that genetics discourse produces deterministic or fatalistic responses and studies reporting that the majority of laypeople do not hold or adopt genetically deterministic views. This article reports data from an interview study (n = 50), and an interpretation of those data grounded in materialist understandings of discourse, that explains at least part of the disparity. The article employs a detailed reading of an illustrative transcript embedded in a quantitative content analysis to suggest that laypeople have incorporated two sets of public discourses—one that describes genetic causation and another that describes behavioral causation. These different …

The Influence Of Viewpoint And Object Detail In Blind People When Matching Pictures To Complex Objects, Morton A. Heller, Tara Riddle, Erin Fulkerson, Lindsay Wemple, Anne Mcclure Walk, Stephanie Guthrie, Crystal Kranz, Patricia Klaus Jan 2009

The Influence Of Viewpoint And Object Detail In Blind People When Matching Pictures To Complex Objects, Morton A. Heller, Tara Riddle, Erin Fulkerson, Lindsay Wemple, Anne Mcclure Walk, Stephanie Guthrie, Crystal Kranz, Patricia Klaus

Morton A. Heller

We examined haptic viewpoint effects in blindfolded-sighted (BS) and visually impaired subjects: early blind (EB), late blind (LB), and very low vision (VLV). Participants felt complex objects and matched tangible pictures to them. In experiment 1, the EB and BS subjects had similar overall performance. Experiment 2 showed that the presence of a detail on the target object lowered performance in the BS subjects, and that matching accuracy was lower overall for top views for the blind subjects. In experiments 3 ^ 5, EB, LB, VLV, and BS subjects made judgments about perspective pictures of a model house with more …

A Tikz Tutorial: Generating Graphics In The Spirit Of Tex, Andrew Mertz, William Slough Jan 2009

A Tikz Tutorial: Generating Graphics In The Spirit Of Tex, Andrew Mertz, William Slough

Andrew Mertz

TikZ is a system which can be used to specify graphics of very high quality. For example, accurate place- ment of picture elements, use of TEX fonts, ability to incorporate mathematical typesetting, and the possi- bility of introducing macros can be viewed as positive factors of this system. The syntax uses an amal- gamation of ideas from METAFONT, METAPOST, PSTricks, and SVG, allowing its users to \program" their desired graphics. The latest revision to TikZ introduces many new features to an already feature- packed system, as evidenced by its 560-page user manual. Here, we present a tutorial overview of this …

Prospective Elementary School Teachers’ Culturally Responsive Teaching Self‐Efficacy Beliefs, Catherine L. Polydore Jan 2009

Prospective Elementary School Teachers’ Culturally Responsive Teaching Self‐Efficacy Beliefs, Catherine L. Polydore

Catherine L. Polydore

In this study, the authors examined prospective elementary school teachers’ culturally responsive teaching self‐efficacy beliefs. The Culturally Responsive Teaching Self‐Efficacy Scale was administered to a sample of 104 preservice teachers enrolled in a teacher education program located at a large Midwestern university. These results suggested that prospective elementary school teachers felt more confident in their ability to use a variety of teaching and instructional methods, communicate with parents, and develop positive, trusting relationships with students. The sample of preservice teachers, however, were less confident in their ability to communicate with English Language Learners, minimize the effects of the cultural mismatch, …
