Phylogeny, Biogeography, And Revision Of The Subfamily Dallatorrellinae (Hymenoptera, Liopteridae), Zhiwei Liu Jan 2001

Phylogeny, Biogeography, And Revision Of The Subfamily Dallatorrellinae (Hymenoptera, Liopteridae), Zhiwei Liu

Zhiwei Liu

A recent cladistic study suggested that the parasitoid wasp subfamily Dallatorrellinae is a monophyletic clade within the cynipoid family Liopteridae. The subfamily currently includes only four known species belonging to two genera, i.e., the monotypic genus Mesocynips Cameron, 1903 and the genus Dallatorrella Kieffer, 1911 . The present study presents a revision of the subfamily, including descriptions of five new species in the genus Dallatorrella: D. maculata, D. maxima, D. pulla, D. ronquisti and D. sinica. A key to the species of the subfamily is provided. Cladistic analysis of the subfamily at species level is undertaken and the biogeographic history …

Haptic Perception Of The Horizontal By Blind And Low-Vision Individuals, Morton A. Heller, Deneen D. Brackett, Eric Scroggs, Angela C. Allen, Shavonda Green Jan 2001

Haptic Perception Of The Horizontal By Blind And Low-Vision Individuals, Morton A. Heller, Deneen D. Brackett, Eric Scroggs, Angela C. Allen, Shavonda Green

Morton A. Heller

We examined haptic perception of the horizontal in visually impaired people. Blind people (late blind and congenitally blind), persons with very low vision, and blindfolded sighted individ- uals felt raised-line drawings of jars at four angles. They had to demonstrate their understanding that water remains horizontal, despite jar tilt, by selecting the correct raised-line drawing given four choices. Low-vision subjects, with near perfect scores, performed significantly better than the other groups of subjects. While the late-blind and blindfolded sighted subjects performed slightly better than the congenitally blind participants, the difference between the late-blind and congenitally blind groups was nonsignificant. The …

Once Upon A Time In Aframerica: The "Peculiar" Significance Of Fairies In The Brownies' Book, Fern Kory Jan 2001

Once Upon A Time In Aframerica: The "Peculiar" Significance Of Fairies In The Brownies' Book, Fern Kory

Fern Kory

The Brownies'Book (January 1920-December 1921) was a groundbreaking but short-lived monthly children's magazine created in part to provide African American children like Annabelle with "colored" fairies. It was the brainchild of W. E. B. DuBois, the only African American founding member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and since 1910 the managing editor of the NAACP's official organ, Crisis: A Record of the Darker Races. The Brownies' Book grew out of the popular annual "Children's Number" of Crisis, published each October starting in 1912. In this special issue, dozens of photographs of African American children submitted …

Durational, Proportionate, And Absolute Frequency Characteristics Of Disfluencies: A Longitudinal Study Regarding Persistence And Recovery, Rebecca Throneburg, Ehud Yairi Jan 2001

Durational, Proportionate, And Absolute Frequency Characteristics Of Disfluencies: A Longitudinal Study Regarding Persistence And Recovery, Rebecca Throneburg, Ehud Yairi

Rebecca Throneburg

The main objective of this study was to investigate developmental aspects of disfluencies over time as stuttering persists or ameliorates for 2 groups of preschool age children who stutter. Results indicated that the frequency, type, and duration of disfluencies remained relatively constant instead of increasing as expected in the persistent group over a 3-year period. In contrast, the recovered group's initially higher frequency of disfluency decreased over time, as did their number of repetition units and proportion of disrhythmic phonations, while the duration of silent intervals between repetition units and proportion of monosyllabic word repetitions increased.
