The Purification And Partial Characterization Of The Surface Polysaccharides From Three Fast-Growing Rhizobium Japonicum Strains, Madhav P. Yadav

The fast-growing strains of R. japonicum were originally isolated from China. They are acid-producing Rhizobia and are capable of nodulating soybeans. These isolates share a common host-specificity (Peking soybean) with the slow-growing R. japonicum strains even though their biochemical properties are more closely related to other fast-growing Rhizobium species. The surface polysaccharides from three fast-growing R. japonicum strains--USDA201, USDA205, and HC205--were isolated and partially characterized. Strain HC205 is a nod⁻ mutant of USDA205 which lacks the symbiotic plasmid. These surface polysaccharides consist of extracellular, capsular and lipopolysaccharides (EPSs, CPSs and LPSs). The purpose of this study was to implement a participative management program at Cumberland High School in Toledo, Illinois. The researcher, who had been principal at the school for five years, believed that participative management may be a solution to what he perceived as problems within the school. These problems included low teacher morale, below average student achievement, and a lack of open communication between individual teachers and administrators. In addition, teacher gains in effectiveness and productivity as based on formal teacher evaluation reports, were minimal.

A Study Of Oxygen Functional Groups In Illinois Coal Fractions, Kenneth R. Osborne

Ferric chloride/acetic anhydride reacted with butyl phenyl ether in acetonitrile at 80° to give a 75.6% yield of p-butoxyacetophenone. Reactions with benzyl aryl ethers gave 30% cleavage. The reaction of benzyl phenyl ether gave 10.3% p-benzyloxyacetophenone as well as cleavage product. Reaction of a pyridine soluble, toluene insoluble fraction (preasphaltene) of an Illinois No. 6 coal with ferric chloride/acetic anhydride in acetonitrile gave a product 94% insoluble in pyridine. The insolubility was ascribed to condensation reactions.

Phenols were measured in coals, preasphaltenes and preasphaltene derivatives by acetylation with acetic anhydride in pyridine. Suggestions for improvement in the method were presented. …

This study was conducted to examine the effectiveness of three feedback conditions on a multiplication task. Data were obtained over a nine week period of instruction with a single individual. Both correct and incorrect responses were charted and analyzed in the results. A pretest and two posttests, one immediate and one after six weeks, were given to obtain information about the retention of the multiplication tasks.

Results of this study showed that practice with immediate feedback and practice with delayed feedback were significantly better than no feedback without practice for correct responses. Practice with immediate feedback was significantly better than …

Six subjects of Nerodia sipedon were tested for runway acquisition. Five of six subjects met criterion for runway learning, demonstrating a significant decrease over the 25 day testing period in mean latency and running times. Four subjects completed 170 trials in a T-maze to test two-choice discrimination and reversal learning. All subjects met criterion for the initial discrimination and one reversal while two subjects completed four reversals and one subject met criterion for six reversals. Results are similar or superior to those previously reported for reptiles and other non-human vertebrates.

The sampling transects at Indiana Dunes were established to show the pre-burn condition of the vetetation and to monitor the long term effects of burning. However, one year of monitoring showed changes in vetetation that further substantiate the need for the burning program.

Miller Woods (Transect A) has burned frequently in recent years. The one year without fire showed little change in the herbaceous layer. The few notable herbaceous changes might indicate a transition to a more mesic community, but should be viewed skeptically because of the wet season in 1982.

Collections of Cladonias with cup-shaped podetia were made in Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin in order to determine the distribution of an atranorin-containing variant of Cladonia cryptochlorophaea, which was discovered in 1982 in Coles County, Illinois by Cheryl Cunningham. A second objective was a distributional study of the Cladonias having cup-shaped podetia in the same three state area.

The LPSs from four symbiotic mutants of R. trifolii were isolated and characterized. The mutants were obtained from Dr. Barry Rolfe of The Australian National University. Three mutants have Tn5 insertions in the "nod" regions of the symbiotic plasmid. The fourth has a 30 kb deletion. This deletion includes the majority of the "nod" regions. All mutants fail to nodulate clover and fail to induce markedly curled root hairs, i.e. they are hac-nod-. An exact centrifugal distortion analysis is then carried out on the microwave spectrum of this "T''-shaped hydrogen-bonded π complex. Sediment oxygen demand is an important factor in determining dissolved oxygen concentrations in streams and rivers subjected to sewage effluents and other sources of organic pollution. Resuspension of sediments during bottom-scouring after periods of heavy precipitation exerts an immediate and increased oxygen demand on the water and is expected to decrease sediment oxygen demand at the site.

A comparative study of the woody vegetation changes at Baber Woods, Edgar County, Illinois, since 1964 was completed in 1983. This 51 acre woodlot is a remnant of a much larger forest which once occuppied the Shelbyville Moraine.

An inventory of the woody vegetation shows that the present stand consists of 109 stems per acre with a basal area of 113 sq. ft. per acre. In this survey, 33 woody species were found. Cutbacks in school funding have caused reductions in staff beyond those resulting from declining enrollments. One way to accomodate reduced funding is to change full-time counselors to part-time counselors by adding teaching or supervisory responsibilities. This research examines the impact of such policies on members of the Okaw Valley Chapter of the Illinois Association for Counseling and Development (IACD).
