Talk Should Be Cheap: The Supreme Court Has Spoken On Compelled Fees, But Universities Are Not Listening, Falco Anthony Muscante Ii
Duquesne Law Review
Taking money from a person to support political and ideological projects with which that person disagrees is, in the words of Thomas Jefferson, "sinful and tyrannical." Public universities are meddling with sin and tyranny by compelling some students to pay mandatory student activity fees in support of political and ideological activities with which those students disagree. This Article provides separate legal and historical backgrounds for both public union dues and fees and the more-recent public university student activity fees to ultimately propose a constitutional system congruent with Janus v. AFSCME, Council 31, and its impact on Board of Regents …

Hidden Amongst People: Experiences Fo Black White Biracial Individuals With Microaggressions, Horizontal Hostilities, And Identity Denial In Educational Settings, Deborah Luckett
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative dissertation explores the dissonance between critical race theory and culturally relevant pedagogical practices in the context of non-binary identity formation and identity denial for Black White Biracial (BWBR) individuals. This positioned subject study examines stories of five adult female members of this population. Utilizing Bell’s Storytelling for Social Justice Model (2020) the study reveals the stock, concealed, resistance and, emerging/transforming stories of participants as they recall experiences with monoracially instigated microaggressions and horizontal hostilities. The model provides analytic themes to examine the dissonance. The following questions will be explored:
Primary Question: What socio/cultural interactions influence BWBR racial identity …

Cultural Trauma Fiction: Political Violence, Rampage Violence, And Structural Violence In Contemporary American Literature, Courtney Mullis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation identifies and proposes a new subgenre of American literature, Cultural Trauma Fiction, that has arisen since the late 20th century in response to numerous large-scale traumatic events and their representation in the media. Cultural trauma occurs when a shocking, shared event fractures collective identity and initiates a discursive process to understand what took place, why it happened, and how the affected culture can heal. Cultural traumas differ from individual trauma because cultural traumas affect a culture, rather than an individual, and because they are mediated; many members of the culture experience the trauma of these events secondhand …

An Exploration Of The Context And Ecclesiastical Investigations Of The Virgin's Reported Appearance In Knock, Ireland In 1879, Erin Meikle
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
On August 21, 1879, the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Joseph, St. John the Evangelist, and the Lamb of God reportedly appeared in Knock, Ireland. Ecclesiastical authorities of the Roman Catholic Church investigated this reported apparition in 1879 and again in 1936. The first chapter of this paper explores the processes by which the Church investigates alleged apparitions and considers different models for conceptualizing the Church. The second chapter unpacks the context of two nineteenth century French apparitions. The third chapter explores the Knock apparition and the immediate historical context surrounding the apparition. The analyses in the first two chapters serve …

The Complete Poems Of Anne Bannerman, Matthew Heilman
The Complete Poems Of Anne Bannerman, Matthew Heilman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Anne Bannerman (c.1780-1829) spent most of her life in Edinburgh, Scotland and published three volumes of poetry in the early nineteenth century. For my dissertation, I have prepared the first fully-annotated critical edition of Bannerman’s complete works, including Poems (1800), Tales of Superstition and Chivalry (1802), and Poems, A New Edition (1807). A comprehensive introduction provides information on Bannerman’s life and background, and examines her work in the context of British Romanticism, the Gothic, Scottish nationalism, and the ballad tradition. Close-readings of the poems examine the ways in which Bannerman’s female narrators challenge early nineteenth-century conceptualizations of gender, particularly in …

Schools As Systems Of Care Supporting Mental Wellness In Schools: Teacher Perceptions And Roles, Tracy Lynn Scanlon Limegrover
Schools As Systems Of Care Supporting Mental Wellness In Schools: Teacher Perceptions And Roles, Tracy Lynn Scanlon Limegrover
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Schools lack a response system for effectively supporting student mental health needs and there is a substantial research to practice gap in this area. To better understand how to build capacity for schools, with and through teachers, the purpose of this study was to examine teachers' perceptions of current mental health needs in their schools; their knowledge and competencies about mental health issues as well as perceived competencies and barriers that contribute to burnout. Participants included 20 teachers from two local Pittsburgh area Catholic schools. Teachers reported they believe it is their job to support middle school student mental wellness …
Techno-Racism: Heidegger's Philosophy Of Technology And Critical Philosophies Of Race, James Michael Taylor
Techno-Racism: Heidegger's Philosophy Of Technology And Critical Philosophies Of Race, James Michael Taylor
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Racism continues to be a pressing problem in Western Society. In some ways it even makes a great deal of sense to think about racism as a tool of political power. My dissertation explores the way in which racism is informed by the underlying social structure of whiteness, and the way that modern technology is informed by the underlying structure of the enframing. I draw on the works of George Yancy, and Cornel West to demonstrate that the everyday problems we face in racism are informed and guided by the systemic problem of whiteness. I then use the work of …
