Background: Diabetes distress (DD) is defined by emotional and behavioral challenges caused from diabetes and its management. Diabetes self-care behaviors can be compromised by DD. Personal Health Record (PHR) use has been associated with improvements in HbA1c, blood pressure, and LDL-C, but the relationship between DD and PHR use is unknown. Aims: 1) to determine differences between sociodemographic variables and intention to use and actual use of PHR in hospitalized persons with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), 2) to investigate the relationship between DD, intention to use a PHR and actual use of a PHR within 30 days of hospital …

Technological Change And The Practice Of Healthcare Communication: Implications For Patient-Centered Care, From A Communication Ethics Perspective, Emmalee Torisk Aug 2021

Technological Change And The Practice Of Healthcare Communication: Implications For Patient-Centered Care, From A Communication Ethics Perspective, Emmalee Torisk

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Written in a historical moment marked in many ways by the COVID-19 pandemic and the changes it has wrought, including the increased availability and use of telehealth services, this project attempts to consider the implications of the continued integration of technology into health care, centering on the following essential question: How do technological changes affect the contemporary practice of healthcare communication, particularly that which occurs between the patient—the consumer of health care—and their provider? This dissertation thus considers the ways in which such linkages of technology and health care seem to fit into a larger shift within health care …

An Investigation Of Technology Implementation Through The Lens Of Student Centered Learning And The Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge Paradigm, Adam Wasilko May 2020

An Investigation Of Technology Implementation Through The Lens Of Student Centered Learning And The Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge Paradigm, Adam Wasilko

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

National statistics show that there are increases in access and availability of computers, and technology, in both the classroom and students’ personal lives (Culp et al. 2005, Hoffman & Ramirez, 2018). However, Tas (2017) and Wachira and Kenngwee (2010) posit that there is stagnation, even declines in certain cases, of the integration of instructional technologies in delivering student center learning in the classroom. This decline is even more prevalent in the science classroom (Vickrey, Golick, & Stains, 2018). Teachers face many challenges in the classroom; especially when technology integration is considered (Blackburn, 2016). This study seeks to determine which conditions …

The Impact Of 1:1 Technology Initiatives On Lesson Planning, Michael Amick May 2019

The Impact Of 1:1 Technology Initiatives On Lesson Planning, Michael Amick

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Districts across the country are quickly moving toward a 1:1 student to laptop ratio. Where computer labs or carts were once the norm, many districts are now purchasing all students a laptop to start the year. This movement is occurring at a rapid pace, despite a growing body of research that shows that increased technology does not automatically lead to achievement gains. The teacher plays a vital role in student outcomes, with or without technology. In particular, the manner in which teachers plan lessons is significant to classroom outcomes. This is evident in that the Charlotte Danielson Framework for Teaching …

When Humanity Meets Technology: Contemplating Neil Postman's Critique Of Advertising, Yingwen Wang May 2019

When Humanity Meets Technology: Contemplating Neil Postman's Critique Of Advertising, Yingwen Wang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This project aims to contemplate Postman’s critique of advertising and offer insights to understand Integrated Marketing Communication (IMC) in today’s mediated environment. As an essential component of IMC, the history of advertising demonstrates and documents that the medium of communication has an extensive influence on IMC practices. The concern about how communication media affect human perception, understanding, and behavior, resides within the central claim of the study of media ecology. Thus, this project investigates IMC through the lens of Postman’s media ecology perspectives, and argues that Postman’s prescient ideas provide both hope and constructive insights. Moreover, Postman’s thermostatic perspective, rooted …

The Postman Always Rings Twice: Neil Postman's Views On Education Are Relevant Again In The 21st Century Classroom, Jennifer Spiegel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The public education system in America has long been criticized for its inability to prepare students for success as adults. While some engage in a narrative of blame, others ask what can be done to solve this problem. This dissertation examines a narrative crisis in the 21stcentury classroom through the lens of Neil Postman, a 20thcentury media ecologist whose fears about television may finally be realized with the advent of the personal digital device and its impact on the educational sphere. First the past narratives that guided the American school system will be traced from colonial …

The Word: Jacques Ellul's Dialogic Response To La Technique, Jeffrey S. Bogaczyk May 2018

The Word: Jacques Ellul's Dialogic Response To La Technique, Jeffrey S. Bogaczyk

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The focus of this interpretive work is primarily to bring two Ellulian metaphors into conversation with one another: la technique, and “the word.” Jacques Ellul (1912-1994), a prominent French philosopher, sociologist, and theologian, is predominantly known for his critique of what he calls la technique, an underlying system which acts as an all-encompassing feature of necessity, which privileges the values of efficiency, speed, and progress in all societal endeavors, and which serves as the predominant interpretive lens by which we can examine and understand our current historical and cultural moment. Technique had its origination in the value system of …

Outsourcing Our Memory 2.0: Using Walter Ong's Orality/Literacy Studies To Recognize Technologies Effects On Memory, Rishi Raj Bahl

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

At the heart of media ecology is the principle that technology not only deeply influences society, but also controls most aspects of daily life. Additionally, media ecology investigates how media and communication processes profoundly affect human perception and understanding. The pervasive role that technology plays in modern life today has exacerbated the results of technology on human beings. Some of these outcomes are not desirable and may be a hindrance to the progress of our society. This dissertation takes particular interest in the multifaceted consequences that the overuse of technology imposes on our ability to fully utilize our memory.

Dialogic Praxes In Gabriel Marcel’S Philosophy: Hope For Being In A Technological World, Margaret M. Mullan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In a technological age, communicators report conflicting experiences of presence and absence, connection and isolation. Dislocation, distraction, and disconnection present challenges for dialogue and reveal a world broken by technology. A world broken by technology invites a response. Philosopher Gabriel Marcel (1889-1973) offers insightful reflections on ways of being in a broken world. Marcel’s philosophical reflections on body, reflection, intersubjectivity, and technology form the primary content for this dissertation.

In Chapter One, Gabriel Marcel, philosopher, playwright, and international speaker, is introduced as participant in twentieth-century Paris, France. Marcel’s philosophy emerged in response to his societal, technological, and cultural contexts. Chapter …

An Examination Of Pre-Service Mathematics Teachers' Integration Of Technology Into Instructional Activities Using A Cognitive Demand Perspective And Levels Of Technology Implementation, Ahmet Oguz Akcay

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Technology has changed every aspect of our lives such as communication, shopping, games, business, and education. Technology has been used for decades in the teaching and learning environment in K-12 education and higher education, especially in mathematics education where the use of instructional technology has great potential. Today's students have grown up in the technology era, so our education system should consider this situation before developing curriculum and instructional strategies. Technology can increase the quality of mathematical investigations, portray meaningful mathematical ideas to students and teachers from multiple perspectives, and change traditional ways of doing mathematics (NCTM, 2000). According to …

Casey's Hope: A Communication Ethics Response To Baseball's Fall And Its Future, Matthew David Fazio Jan 2016

Casey's Hope: A Communication Ethics Response To Baseball's Fall And Its Future, Matthew David Fazio

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Baseball was once seen as America's pastime, but somehow lost its way. Baseball was inherently American, and stood for more than a game. Yet a number of events caused baseball to fall from grace. Using Ernest Thayer's poem "Casey at the Bat: A Ballad of Republic Sung in the Year 1888" as a frame work, this project identifies three events that caused baseball's fall and three additional events that currently threaten the game, which will be evaluated according to Aristotle's doctrine of the mean. Understanding the game's past and present will help to develop a methodology to apply to threats …

The Megaphone Of The Soul: Resistance Of Fraudulent Technological Idolization By Recognizing The Power Of Human Choice In Media Ecology, Richard L. Talbert Jan 2016

The Megaphone Of The Soul: Resistance Of Fraudulent Technological Idolization By Recognizing The Power Of Human Choice In Media Ecology, Richard L. Talbert

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Humans naturally communicate, but choose to use tools. They use them to make sense of things, even to their own detriment and the detriment of others. These tools often receive the attention, instead of the human interaction. Aristotle's notion of humans as social animals has been carried into media ecology scholarship by Arendt, Burke, Ellul, Mumford, Postman, and Ricoeur. Social media scholarship has often focused on the tool and how it affects humanity. However, a phenomenological approach is necessary, as humans communicate with or without these tools. This approach will follow multiple steps. The first is through an understanding of …

Experiences Of Playing Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games: A Phenomenological Exploration, Jacob Rusczek Jan 2015

Experiences Of Playing Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games: A Phenomenological Exploration, Jacob Rusczek

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation presents an interpretative phenomenological analysis of the experience of being engaged in a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG). These games have become increasingly popular over the past decade and have earned the reputation of being highly engrossing or even addicting. In this study, five long-term players were interviewed in person. For a portion of the interviews, the researcher observed the participants playing their games. The interviews were transcribed and subsequently analyzed using interpretive phenomenological analysis, which yielded individual and shared themes. Individual themes are first presented, which provides a rich sense of each participant's particular way of …

Virtualizing The Word: Expanding Walter Ong's Theory Of Orality And Literacy Through A Culture Of Virtuality, Jennifer Camille Dempsey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation seeks to create a vision for virtuality culture through a theoretical expansion of Walter Ong's literacy and orality culture model. It investigates the ubiquitous and multimodal nature of the virtuality cultural phenomenon that is mediated by contemporary technology and not explained by pre-existing cultural conventions. Through examining the theoretical underpinnings of orality and literacy culture, the dissertation explores the cultural shift that is just beginning to restructure human consciousness through the ways that society is connecting, exploring and communicating. Further, this dissertation examines the contrasts between virtuality culture features and those related to traditional literacy and orality types, …

"The Fullest Possible Account": Knowledge And Exceptionalism In Post-9/11 Literature, Lee Ann Glowzenski Jan 2014

"The Fullest Possible Account": Knowledge And Exceptionalism In Post-9/11 Literature, Lee Ann Glowzenski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines the intertwined histories of science and American exceptionalism, contending that the September 11th attacks undermine the nation's sense of its scientific superiority and result in the creation of a body of 21st-century literature that explores the country's position as a technological superpower. Specifically, because September 11th counters the nation's belief in its capacity to prevent or contain such attacks, the literature grapples with related challenges to concepts of knowledge, self, and nation.

Chapter One traces the post-World War II relationships among science, military- industrial research, and American culture, arguing that the image of a national security bolstered …

Last Snow: An Analysis Of An Original Electronic Music Suite, Daniel Scott Landis Jan 2013

Last Snow: An Analysis Of An Original Electronic Music Suite, Daniel Scott Landis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Last Snow is a suite of compositions in a genre that most closely approximates a contemporary jazz style with electronic elements and shifting meters. While there are clear examples of imitative synthesis within the work, many abstract examples of a more diffuse, impressionistic bent are also discernible. Much of the programming for these last mentioned tonal colors and synthesizer leads was accomplished by the composer.

The suite has as a unifying feature the tones of the natural scale beginning from various alternate root pitches. The compositions, therefore, operate for the composer as something of a study with several challenges unique …

Beliefs And Technology - Does One Lead To The Other? Evaluating The Effects Of Teacher Self-Efficacy And School Collective Efficacy On Technology Use In The Classroom, Elaine Studnicki Jan 2012

Beliefs And Technology - Does One Lead To The Other? Evaluating The Effects Of Teacher Self-Efficacy And School Collective Efficacy On Technology Use In The Classroom, Elaine Studnicki

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This exploratory mixed method study builds upon previous research to investigate the influence of teacher self- and collective efficacy on technology use in the classroom. This population was purposefully sampled to examine first- and second order technology barriers, instructional strategies, and human influences on technology. The quantitative finding was supported by qualitative analysis of the teacher interviews and led to the conclusion that even thought there were strong teacher tendencies towards a belief in using technology actual practice demonstrated a lack of productivity or transference of that belief into classroom practice. A high self- and collective efficacy had no effect …

The Triptych Tetrad: Marshall Mcluhan's Neo-Medieval Communication Theory, Anthony Wachs Jan 2012

The Triptych Tetrad: Marshall Mcluhan's Neo-Medieval Communication Theory, Anthony Wachs

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The work of Marshall McLuhan has often been reduced to the form of catchphrases and "McLuhanisms," such as the "global village" and "the medium is the message" in the field of communication. Though these phrases capture an aspect of his thought, the scholarly understanding of McLuhan's vision remains incomplete, even within the specialized area of Media Ecology, of which McLuhan is recognized as the intellectual father. Throughout his corpus, McLuhan makes reference to the classical and medieval trivium, which was the basis for education throughout Western history until the Renaissance. Indeed, he developed a history of the trivium up to …

The Impact A Technology Leader And Their Leadership Style Makes In K-12 Classroom Teacher's Implementation Of Technology, Molly S. Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to examine how public school technology leaders' leadership styles in Pennsylvania schools impact K-12 classroom teachers' integration of technology. The study collected data using two online surveys, the MLQ and LoTi, which measured leadership styles and levels of technology integration. Despite the large sample size of 500 school districts, a low response rate of 5.6% resulted. While demographic data and descriptive statistics could be analyzed, it was not possible to run meaningful analytical statistics to show if correlations existed between technology leaders' leadership styles and classroom technology integration. A number of limitations were identified …

A Hermeneutic Exploration Of The Literature Of Technology: Prometheus Bound, Frankenstein And Battlestar Galactica, William Blais

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There are few phenomena in contemporary culture that are more dynamic and impactful than technology. That said the understanding of technology held by most therapists is overly simple or, at best, based on one-dimensional critiques of technological life. The present study endeavors to build a broader understanding of technology that allows for both a robust critique and a more accepting recognition of its potential contributions. The present study explores the archetypally invariant structure of technology as well as the more culturally and historically contingent elements of several of its historically specific expressions. It engages this material through a series of …

The Influence Of Technology On Adolescent Development: An Eco-Cultural Analysis Of Cybersocial Activity, Stephanie Helsel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The introduction of new technologies into society inevitably results in culture-wide changes that affect the way people work, learn, and experience leisure time. For those American adolescents with access to technology, the use of the Internet to develop and maintain relationships is quickly becoming ubiquitous, especially through social network sites; the most popular network site, MySpace, has grown exponentially since its creation in 2003. Adolescents are the primary users of such sites and many of them maintain blogs, or online chronicles that are available for public viewing and comment, along with their profile pages and friend networks. This qualitative study …

Learning By Wandering: Using Technology To Nourish The Spirit, Marie Martin Jan 2007

Learning By Wandering: Using Technology To Nourish The Spirit, Marie Martin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

My purpose in this dissertation is to explore aspects of the nature of learning and to address the question of how to use technology in education to nourish the human spirit. To do this, I use a combination of critical and historical analysis. I reconnect first of all with my native ancient Irish culture. From this perspective, I gain an understanding of learning as a spiritual quest for transcendence effected through learning by wandering, and an insight into technology’s noble role in nourishing this hunger of the human spirit. I find that this vision is given historical expression in the …
