Gendered Norms In Community-Based Engagement: Oral Histories Of The Women In The Elsinore Bennu Think Tank For Restorative Justice, Kathleen Burch

Graduate Student Research Symposium

The state of the criminal justice system in the United States is one in need of repair. A local Pittsburgh group – the Elsinore Bennu Think Tank for Restorative Justice – challenges its members and the community to engage in restorative justice. The group comprises professors, returning citizens, police officers, and lawyers to initiate change through restorative justice in communities impacted by crime.

The Elsinore Bennu Think Tank for Restorative Justice (EBTT) Oral History Project at Duquesne University uses the methodology of oral history to gather stories of change, inspiration, and trauma from EBTT members. I will analyze the aural …

Project-Based Learning In Social Statistics: Direct And Indirect Assessment Of Student Learning Outcomes, Zachary Weland, Nicole Marshall

Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Symposium

The two co-authors were students in this statistics course last year and initiated this project based on their observation that some of their peers struggled with the course content. Statistics education literature suggests anxiety and low sense of self-efficacy related to learning statistics are significant barriers to student engagement and learning in undergraduate social statistics courses. We designed and implemented a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) intervention in a social statistics course in Spring 2020. Preliminary analyses from our ongoing project includes both direct and indirect assessment of student learning (demonstrated student learning and statistics anxiety and efficacy, respectively) among a sample …

Of the top 50 law schools in the U.S., 20% offer a forensic science elective. After the rigor of law school, there is no requirement set to educate lawyers in forensic science. In fact, based on survey responses, 51% of criminal lawyers do not take part in forensic science continuing education programs. Though educators as well as professionals have voiced the need for …

Understanding The Sexual Assault Kit Backlog In Pennsylvania, Kallie Crawford, Lyndsie Ferrara

Graduate Student Research Symposium

According to the FBI, to date, there are more than 400,000 untested sexual assault kits nationwide. While this is a huge issue that cannot be solved overnight, continual improvements and changes are needed to reduce and hopefully eliminate the backlog.

This research examines work going on nationwide and aims to better understand the backlog issues specifically in Pennsylvania. Furthermore, the research examines a program utilized by the law enforcement community that garnered necessary resources. First, a comprehensive review of improved practices in proactive jurisdictions of Ohio, Houston, Texas, and Detroit, Michigan was conducted to identify general policies and procedures that …

Tracking The Sexual Assault Kit Backlog, Kallie Crawford, Lyndsie Ferrara

Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Symposium

The backlog of untested sexual assault kits is a national problem. Numerous federal funding opportunities offer the forensic science and law enforcement communities valuable resources needed to test the kits, but issues still remain. The majority of resources are focused on the collection and testing of sexual assault kits, but the tracking of the kits has not been a primary focus. This research highlights improvements that can be made to better understand the current backlog and improve the future processing and tracking of kits. Given the lack of a universal evidence tracking database among agencies, tracking sexual assault kits seems …
