James Shannon (1799-1859) was a leading intellectual in the Stone-Campbell Movement. Second President, University of Missouri, Columbia, MO. 1850-1856. Co-Founder of Christian College 1851 (now Columbia college), Columbia, MO. Co-Founder of Christian University 1853, and First President (now Culver-Stockton College) Canton, MO.

During this year Eureka College purchased the Christian Sentinel from William Mallory, Proprietor. Publication stayed in Springfield and John F. Rowe remained Associate Editor until Otis A. Burgess became Editor.

Isaac Newton Carman wrote several articles for this volume from Ashland, Ohio. He moved to Peoria, Illinois, at the end of 1856 or early 1857 when he became an editor of the Christian Sentinel.
