Translational Design: Enabling Impact In Complex, Multi-Stakeholder Research Projects Through Design, Rowan Christopher Page, Rosie Hornbuckle, Leah Heiss, André Nogueira
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Translational research converts the knowledge generated through basic research into tangible innovations, solutions, and interventions that directly impact people and the planet. As universities increasingly seek to maximise research impact, the applied, action-oriented, epistemology of design is well-positioned to support translational research. Successful translation requires strong communication and collaboration between different disciplines, industry partners, policy, and research end-users. Multi-stakeholder collaborations foster holistic approaches, leading to more effective and contextually relevant solutions. Designers are well-positioned to facilitate complex entanglements, integrating the needs and values of diverse perspectives. However, the emerging role of design as an enabler of translational research needs to …

Towards A Framework For Innovation In Craft-Design Practices., Anooja J., Vibhavari Kumar
IASDR Conference Series
A transition in human thought and behavior was brought about by the Industrial Revolution in the middle of the 18th century, which increasingly replaced handcrafted industries with mass manufacturing of goods and services. In a nation like India, the majority of the rural population still relies on labor-intensive, widely scattered handicrafts. The second most important component of the country's tradition, both culturally and economically, is handicrafts, after agriculture. Since the beginning of the 1980’s there have been efforts to revive handicrafts, and many initiatives were formulated to support artisans by imparting training workshops in craft. But considering the current scenario, …

Designing Adaptable Consumption: A New Practice To Foster Food System Transitions., Hannah Goss, Nynke Tromp, Rick Schifferstein
IASDR Conference Series
In recent years, more designers have been engaging in transitions for which design activity is used to develop innovations that steer change. However, little is known about how designers develop innovations to foster change along a desired transition path. In this short paper, we explore how designers can develop joint innovations that steer a transition of the Dutch food system to embrace flexibility and cater to enough. We present a new practice called Adaptable Consumption, which aims to realign food safety, quality, and sustainability. Based on our preliminary findings, we discuss how our process inspires reflections on the transition and …

Taking The Culture Out Of The Lab And Into The Office: A “Non-Lab” Approach To Public Service Transformation, Ryan Hum, Paul A. Thibaudeau
Learn X Design Conference Series
Over the years, “Innovation labs” have come and gone in public sector organizations. At Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, one low-key, co-design project over-delivered on client insights, service experience improvements and operational efficiencies. This case study shares one department’s success in embedding human-centered design into organizational culture by: competing against graduate design students, co-designing across the organization (from call agents, to policy, immigration officers, and communications), creating a design project alumni community, and adhering to rigorous measurement and experimentation. The case study will share opportunities and challenges that emerged from the process of embedding human-centered design (via a “non-innovation lab”) …

It explores the practice of using assessments in creative subjects and questions whether the current assessment practice allows students to truly develop creativity and innovation skills. This paper argues that although Norwegian public …
Design For Profit Or Prosper, Else Skjold, Frederik Larsen
Design For Profit Or Prosper, Else Skjold, Frederik Larsen
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Over the past decade, it has become increasingly popular to position design as an excellent tool for companies and organisations to foster innovation and growth. As an adaptable practice design can be applied to serve many ends, and in the field of sustainable transition design has the potential to create new solutions due to its capacity to ‘reframe’ large-scale problems of a ‘wicked’ nature. However, as we will argue in this paper, the innovation and change promoted through design risks becoming merely a vehicle for promoting the values associated with 20th century neoliberal capitalism. We therefore want to question the …
Design As Anticipation And Innovation: Co - Creating A Future By L Earning From The Future As It Emerges, Markus Peschl, Thomas Fundneider
Design As Anticipation And Innovation: Co - Creating A Future By L Earning From The Future As It Emerges, Markus Peschl, Thomas Fundneider
DRS Biennial Conference Series
In this theoretical and conceptual paper we claim that there is a close connection between design, innovation, and anticipation. What they have in common is that they want to make sense of a future and they want to bring about change to a future that is only partly known. This applies even more, if design has to come up with completely new solutions for highly complex problems, such as the big challenges of our current economic or social systems. We will develop a future-oriented perspective on innovation and design. Both design and innovation are operating in the field of uncertainty. …

Teaching ‘Design Thinking’ In The Context Of Innovation Management—From Process To A Dialogue About Principles, Monika Hestad, Jamie Brassett
Teaching ‘Design Thinking’ In The Context Of Innovation Management—From Process To A Dialogue About Principles, Monika Hestad, Jamie Brassett
Learn X Design Conference Series
There has been increased interest in design and ‘design thinking’ in recent times. This has led to the development of a number of interdisciplinary courses where non-designers have the opportunity to learn so-called ‘design thinking’. However, ‘design thinking’ is an ambiguous concept, which is challenging when trying to apply it in non-design learning and teaching contexts: notably, for this study, innovation management. The aim of this study has two aspects: first, a conceptual one, to articulate what ‘design thinking’ means in context of a design-driven approach to innovation management; and second, a more practical one, to consider how it could …

It is widely recognized that training in creative techniques enhances competitiveness and efficiency of the company production process. Relying on the idea that creativity is the basis for innovation, to learn and manage creativity techniques becomes strategic to meet a company’s need for innovation. Hollanders and van Cruysen's system of indicators (2009), based on the European Innovation Scoreboard (EIS), is aimed at quantifying creativity and design, and the role of professional training is key for a company’s success on the market. This paper presents a methodology for drafting a training plan for companies. The methodology counts on two approaches similar …

Next Innovation Playground: A Culturaloriented Product Design Model, Yu-Ju Chuang, Tsen-Yao Chang
DRS Biennial Conference Series
The emergence of cultural pluralism in today’s markets presents unlimited economic opportunities and challenges in terms of industrial competition. Through effective designs, intangible cultural features transform into tangible products with economic values. Moreover, through the success of ethnic target marketing, products with cultural symbols or traditions have differentiated themselves from other industrial products in the increasingly homogeneous market. Embedding cultural relevance into product design does not only tap into the regional feelings of potential consumers but also creates original contexts for innovation. Thus, developing soft and emotional power through individual cultural artifacts in industries that function as symbolic identities and …

The global business world has shed a bright light on cultural differences and generated extensive examination of values and behaviors around the world. Yet despite obvious differences in the design and utilization of office environments, little attention has been given to the implications of culture on space design. Multinational companies, unaware of the cultural ramifications of culture-specific design, often transplant workplace layouts from their home locations to other countries around the world, with little thought to local culture, climate and employees’ needs and expectations. The results can be workplaces that are unappealing, dysfunctional and stressful. What are the key trends …

From The Culture Of Project To Spread Creativity: Mutations Of Design As A Profession In The Society Of Knowledge, Lorenzo Imbesi
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Along with the transition to the 'new capitalism', which may be variously defined as cognitive, flexible, post-industrial or post-Fordist, we are experiencing a new productive scenario since the Seventies of the last century, where innovation and creativity are rising as key factors for competitiveness and come to be the capital for the production system to open a new stage. If the industrial capitalism of modernity required the manufacturing of big quantities of physical products, the mutation of the role of industry and production, the globalization of markets and the emergence of communication in every social occurrence are changing the nature …

When Artists And Designers Inspire Collective Intelligence Practices: Two Case Studies Of Collaboration, Interdisciplinarity, And Innovation Projects, Isabelle Mahy, Mithra Zahedi
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Current mainstream collaborative processes and practices are not always fit to deal with the complexity of our society and the problems it generates. The lack of complexity-based practices for empowering collective intelligence conditions makes it difficult to address and solve intertwined multi stakeholders situations. As a disciplinary attitude can rarely succeed to solve complex and wicked problems, there is relevance and a need to question today’s mainstream approaches to collaboration and innovation. We explore this issue by asking how design can be of help to lead this reflection and to translate collaboration into pragmatic activities. We propose that by focusing …
