Water Quality Study Of The Muchea Livestock Truck Wash, Simon Clarendon, David Weaver, Justin L.M Hardy, Claire Coffey, Robert Summers, David Rogers, Peta Richards
Resource management technical reports
Across Australia there is a lack of information on the quality of the water discharged from facilities that are used to wash livestock trucks. This water quality scoping study partially fills that information gap and provides a starting point for future planning, design and construction of livestock truck washes.
The study was undertaken in 2011–12 at the Western Australian Muchea Livestock Centre, and aimed to gain insights into water quality associated with the truck wash facility at that site. These insights can help to inform the planning for further construction of truck wash facilities throughout the state, and whether disposing …

Plant Diseases Impacting Oaten Hay Production In Australia - A Review, Kylie Chambers, Geoff J. Thomas
Plant Diseases Impacting Oaten Hay Production In Australia - A Review, Kylie Chambers, Geoff J. Thomas
Bulletins 4000 -
In Australia, there are a range of fungal, bacterial and viral pathogens that infect oats, impacting on yield and quality of grain and hay crops. The overall impact of these diseases on oaten hay production is not well researched or understood, especially compared to that of other cereal crops. Export hay is evaluated on physical qualities such as stem thickness and greenness and nutritional qualities including water-soluble carbohydrates, neutral detergent fibre, acid detergent fibre and dry matter digestibility. The colour/ greenness of oaten hay can be reduced by disease lesions, chlorosis and saphrophytic fungi growing on dead tissue all of …

Fisheries research reports
This study examined possible contributing environmental factors to the recruitment variability of the Ballot’s saucer scallop Ylistrum balloti across the main stocks in Western Australia. The project was undertaken to explain the variation observed between years and between regions as well elucidating the potential cause of a major decline in scallop stocks following an extreme marine heatwave, with these findings intended to improve future management advice.

Bedstraw Eradication Program 2019/2020 - Annual Report To Grain Growers, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia
Biosecurity published reports
Three-horned bedstraw (Galium tricornutum) is a competitive weed that can cause considerable yield loss in crops, and its seeds are contaminants of fodder and grain. The presence of bedstraw requires infested areas to be quarantined whilst a nine-year program is undertaken – six years of herbicide treatments followed by a three-year ‘release phase’.
In 2019/20 the Program reached a major milestone with quarantine restrictions fully lifted from one property and lifted from the arable areas of a second property. This is a major step toward eradicating bedstraw from Western Australia.

Skeleton Weed Program 2019/2020: Annual Report To Grain Growers, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia
Biosecurity published reports
2019/20 saw the Skeleton Weed Program expand its surveillance and control activities, with financial support from the IFS, specifically:
- Landholder incentives for paddock surveillance were increased and made available for surveillance undertaken on reinfested ‘Code 2’ paddocks. These changes were anticipated to enhance the level of surveillance for skeleton weed, enabling plants to be identified and treated and, therefore, reducing the risk of seed-set and spread.
- The IFS covered the cost of chemical for winter spraying undertaken on heavily infested paddocks. It was anticipated that this would help landholders reduce the level of skeleton weed infestation and, in …

The Effect Of Soil Ph On Phosphorus Content Of Clover Pasture, David Weaver, Robert Summers, David Rogers, Peta Richards
The Effect Of Soil Ph On Phosphorus Content Of Clover Pasture, David Weaver, Robert Summers, David Rogers, Peta Richards
Resource management technical reports
Testing of pasture soils from 2009 to 2018, as part of DPIRD’s Whole Farm Nutrient Mapping (WFNM) project in the coastal catchments of south-west Western Australia (WA), indicated that soil pH was so low it could be limiting plant access to nutrients. Observations by some farmers who had been involved in the soil testing were that lime application had not increased pasture production, even when pHCa (pH measured in calcium chloride) tests indicated that phosphorus (P) should become more available by increasing soil pH. Farmers also wanted to know if they needed to apply more P than soil testing …
