Aristotle's Difficult Relationship With Modern Economic Theory, Spencer J. Pack
Aristotle's Difficult Relationship With Modern Economic Theory, Spencer J. Pack
Economics Faculty Publications
This paper reviews Aristotle's problematic relationship with modern economic theory. It argues that in terms of value and income distribution theory, Aristotle should probably be seen as a precursor to neither classical nor neoclassical economic thought. Indeed, there are strong arguments to be made that Aristotle's views are completely at odds with all modern economic theory, since, among other things, he was not necessarily concerned with flexible market prices, opposed the use of money to acquire more money, and did not think that the unintended consequences of human activity were generally beneficial. The paper argues however, that this interpretation goes …

Response To Changes In Key Stimuli Through The Co-Evolution Of Sensor Morphology And Control, Gary Parker, Pramod J. Nathan
Response To Changes In Key Stimuli Through The Co-Evolution Of Sensor Morphology And Control, Gary Parker, Pramod J. Nathan
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Co-evolving a robot’s sensor morphology and control program increases the potential that it can effectively complete its tasks and provides a means for adapting to changes in the environment. In previous work, we presented a learning system where the angle, range, and type of sensors on a hexapod robot, along with the control program, were evolved. Although three sensor stimuli were detectable by the system, it used only two due to the relative importance of these two stimuli in completing the task. In the research presented in this paper, we used the same system, but reduced the availability of a …

Basic Control For Four Rotor Autonomous Aerial Agent, Jonathan Mclean, Gary Parker, Newell Seal
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Aerial robotics provides many practical applications in fields such as search and rescue and surveying. In order to advance the research in aerial robotics, an inexpensive test platform is required. Our four-rotor platform provides researchers with a inexpensive, fully scalable test platform for future studies. Its completely on-board processing removes the need for a virtual tether in the form of a radio transmitter, allowing for completely autonomous operation.
Evolving Predator Control Programs For A Hexapod Robot Pursuing A Prey, Gary Parker, Basar Gulcu
Evolving Predator Control Programs For A Hexapod Robot Pursuing A Prey, Gary Parker, Basar Gulcu
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Control program learning systems for autonomous robots are important to assist in their development and to allow them to adapt to changes in their capabilities and/or the environment. A common method for learning in robotics is Evolutionary Computation (EC) and a good problem to demonstrate the effectiveness of a learning system is the predator/prey problem. In previous research, we used a Cyclic Genetic Algorithm (CGA), a form of EC, to evolve the control program for a predator robot with a simple sensor configuration of 4 binary sensors, which yielded 16 possible sensor states. In this paper, we present the use …

Convocation 2008 Address By Alumna Liza Talusan, Liza Talusan
Convocation Addresses
Alumna Liza Talusan relates that one of the most important lessons she learned about the Connecticut College community didn’t happen in the classrooms, nor while she was a housefellow or hanging out at Unity House, but happened long after she graduated, years after she married her Connecticut College sweetheart, and even after they had their first child.
Liberal Arts 2.0, Bridget B. Baird
Liberal Arts 2.0, Bridget B. Baird
Convocation Addresses
The title, Liberal Arts 2.0., "stems from the term Web 2.0, which refers to the recent evolution of the Web as interactive, participatory, collaborative and collective. Web 2.0 includes blogs, wikis, user-generated media, social networking: like much of what it describes, the definition is amorphous and inexact." Baird believes that Web 2.0 and all that it implies will necessitate a revision of the way we do liberal arts and thus the title “Liberal Arts 2.0.”
Her premise: that a liberal arts college is a place where teaching and research are improved by digital tools, where students are taught to negotiate …

For Love, Money Or Flexibility: Why People Choose To Work In Consumer-Directed Homecare, Candace Howes
For Love, Money Or Flexibility: Why People Choose To Work In Consumer-Directed Homecare, Candace Howes
Economics Faculty Publications
The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of wages and benefits (relative to other jobs available to workers), controlling for personal characteristics, on the recruitment and retention of providers working in a consumer-directed home care program.
This article was written as part of a project titled ‘‘Building a High Quality Homecare Workforce: Wages, Benefits and Flexibility Matter,’’ which was supported by a research grant from the Better Jobs Better Care Program and funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (#049213) and Atlantic Philanthropies (#12099) with direction and technical assistance provided by the Institute for the Future of …

The Role Of The Tight-Turn, Broken Hydrogen Bonding, Glu222 And Arg96 In The Post-Translational Green Fluorescent Protein Chromophore Formation, Marc Zimmer, Nathan P. Lemay, Alicia L. Morgan, Elizabeth J. Archer, Luisa A. Dickson, Colleen M. Megley
Chemistry Faculty Publications
Green fluorescent proteins (GFP) and GFP-like proteins all undergo an autocatalytic post-translational modification to form a centrally located chromophore. Structural analyses of all the GFP and GFP-like proteins in the protein databank were undertaken to determine the role of the tight-turn, broken hydrogen bonding, Gly67, Glu222 and Arg96 in the biosynthesis of the imidazolone group from 65SYG67. The analysis was supplemented by computational generation of the conformation adopted by uncyclized wild-type GFP. The data analysis suggests that Arg96 interacts with the Tyr66 carbonyl, stabilizing the reduced enolate intermediate that is required for cyclization; the carboxylate of Glu222 acts as a …
