The Role Of Virtual Communication Platforms In Academically Supporting Post-Secondary Students, Eldora M. Fosmire Dec 2018

The Role Of Virtual Communication Platforms In Academically Supporting Post-Secondary Students, Eldora M. Fosmire

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

While many consider college students to be digital natives, who are at ease with multiple forms of technology, many of these students do not adapt these skills for academic purposes. Retention concerns for college students often prompt support staff to seek out and adopt technology approaches to promote completion. This study provided a virtual learning platform to deliver academic support and sought to promote learning community interaction for rural and urban post-secondary students. A subset of vocational major programs that prepare students for employment after completion served as a participant pool. However, participants in the study chose not to use …

The Impact Of A Collaborative Data-Inquiry Culture, As Promoted By The Harvard University Data Wise Improvement Process, On Student Achievement., Kenneth I. Barrie

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

The study examined the impact of a collaborative data-inquiry culture, promoted by the Harvard University Data Wise Improvement Process (DWIP), on student achievement. 58 teacher surveys and PARCC scores for 2, 631 students were taken from four middle schools in a minority district. A quantitative method and a quasi-experimental one-sample-pretest-posttest design were used. Analysis involved Chi-Squared tests followed by pairwise comparisons. Statistical significance was determined using standard alpha of p ppppppp< 0.00556. Future research should focus on a larger school sample, data on the student level, and the impact of the DWIP on school culture.

Social Media And Academic Performance: Assisting Academic Achievement For English Language Learners, Eduardo D. Moreno

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

The purpose of this quantitative retrospective, causal-comparative study was to examine what, if any, statistically significant difference existed between Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) mathematical and reading achievement of English Language Learners (ELL) in a school using Seesaw—a social media platform—and those in a school not using Seesaw in an elementary school setting in Northern California. The population of ELL third and fourth-grade students within each participating school was 52, for a total of 104 participants. All ELL students in this study come from Spanish speaking homes and were Spanish speakers. Collection of data occurred through the MAP Growth assessments. …

Fundraising Managers’ Perceptions Of Online Education’S Influence On Fundraising Practices And Giving, Peter J. Szucs

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

The influence of online education on higher education fundraising practices and giving patterns is not well understood. This qualitative case study explored how fundraising managers perceived the impact of online education on higher education fundraising. To explore this phenomenon, the researcher interviewed fundraising managers at private, nonprofit colleges and universities in the western United States, and reviewed publicly available documents on the participant schools fundraising and financial information. The interviews demonstrated that study participants were concerned about connecting with graduates of online programs, and perceived that online students may have less affinity for their alma mater than on-ground alumni. The …

A Case Study Of Fine Arts Teachers’ Perceptions Of Eportfolio Evaluation As Professional Development, Jacquelynn S. Demontmollin

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

This qualitative case study illustrated perceptions of seven fine arts teachers who were veteran participants in an ePortfolio evaluation method (with three or more years participation). The research questions centered on professional growth, reflection, and the impact ePortfolio had on the craft of teaching. A blended conceptual framework of Schön’s (1983, 1987) theory of reflection-in-action and reflection-on-action, and Mezirow’s (1991) transformative learning theory was applied to analyze the data. The researcher explored types of reflection fine arts teachers perceive through ePortfolio evaluation, and how the process of ePortfolio evaluation doubled as a professional development for some teachers. Through three phases …

Accuplacer Placement Cutoff Scores As Predictors Of Freshman Performance: A Correlational Analysis, Lulani Tomaszewski

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

There is uncertainty on how to maximize freshman performance in an English course when students have competing placement scores. Students who have scored above the cutoff score on one of the English placement tests (either reading or writing) and scored below the cutoff score on the other are not systematically placed. The purpose of this study was to determine whether ACCUPLACER placement cutoff scores in reading and writing predicted performance in first-semester English courses and first-semester cumulative GPA among incoming students at a community college in the Pacific Northwest during the 2015−2016 and 2016−2017 school years. Two research questions guided …

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

This qualitative study was an exploratory, single-case study from the perspectives of Appreciative Inquiry [AI] practitioners that explored how they determined the impact of an Inquiry. Marion County, Oregon Integration Of School Emergency Preparedness, Mitch Sechler

CUP Undergraduate Research

Collaboration between schools and emergency managers is paramount in addressing the whole community approach to emergency management for increasing preparedness (FEMA, 2011). As every disaster is local, a unified and collaborative approach should be taken to ensure schools are not a hindrance but rather an asset for preparedness, response and recovery efforts. Schools must have ownership and accountability for ensuring they are prepared for emergencies. Additionally, local emergency management agencies with their capabilities, capacity and knowledge must take action in response to the opportunity to build partnerships and expanded their efforts to create a resilient community.

The classroom and the field represent diverse and unique teaching and learning environments which students are required to successfully navigate. Facilitating student success these environments requires the efforts of educators and the students themselves. Understanding educator perspectives about student readiness for practice in fieldwork settings can advance organized professional educator development, lead to improved academic curriculums, and more productive communication between …
