A Comparative Study Of Cognitive Systems For Learning, Praneetha Mandava May 2017

A Comparative Study Of Cognitive Systems For Learning, Praneetha Mandava

Theses and Dissertations

Learning is the modification of a behavioral tendency by experience. Memory and reasoning are the most important aspects for learning in humans; information is temporarily stored in the short-term memory and processed, compared with existing memories and stored in long-term memory, and can be re-used when needed. One way to describe an organized pattern of thought or behavior and the categories of information along with their relationships is by using schemas. A cognitive script is one form of a schema that evolves over multiple exposures to the same set of stimuli and/or repeated enactment of a particular behavior. This research …

A Trivium-Inspired Pseudorandom Number Generator With A Statistical Comparison To The Randomness Of Securerandom And Trivium, Latoya Niesha Jackson

Theses and Dissertations

A pseudorandom number generator (PRNG) is an algorithm that produces a sequence of numbers which emulates the characteristics of a random sequence. In comparison to its genuine counterpart, PRNGs are considered more suitable for computing devices in that they do not consume a lot of resources (in terms of memory) and their portability; they can also be used on a wide range of devices. Cryptographically Secure PRNGs (CSPRNGs) are the only type of PRNGs suitable for cryptographic applications. They are specially designed to withstand security attacks. In this thesis, we provide descriptions of two CSPRNGs: Trivium, a hardware-based stream cipher …

Laurent Binet's Hhhh: Historiographic Metafiction In Contemporary French Literature About World War Ii, Cailee S. Davis

Theses and Dissertations

In the last two decades, a considerable number of contemporary French authors have employed metafiction—a narrative mode in which texts themselves purposefully call attention to the fact that they are fiction—when writing novels which attempt to grapple with traumatic events, namely World War II and the Holocaust. In attempting to understand this popular, but controversial literary phenomenon—called historiographic metafiction—, this thesis contextually analyzes Laurent Binet's Himmler's Him heisst Heydrich (2010), a contemporary French novel about the assassination of real-life Nazi leader Reinhard Heydrich. This thesis also compares Binet's text to two other contemporary French historiographic metafictional novels about World War …

Finding Home: Creating A Video Game Soundtrack, Samantha Chase Jan 2017

Finding Home: Creating A Video Game Soundtrack, Samantha Chase

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this lecture recital was to reflect on the characteristics of video game music, how those characteristics were shaped through technological advancements in the industry, and how to apply them to composition. Due to the limitations of early video game technology and memory space, video game composers were extremely limited. Composers worked through these limitations by composing with limited range and timbres, looping, and extensive use of ostinato. Even though modern day composers are not faced with this challenge, many still rely heavily on these techniques as they have become iconic of video game music. Video game composers …

Pick Me! Pick Me!: Using Aristotelian Rhetorical Persuasion And Advertising Appeals For Self-Promotion, Alexander M. Jones

Theses and Dissertations

This project combines contemporary and classical rhetorical persuasion and applies them to self-promotion. Aristotle’s triad of modes of persuasion, ethos, pathos, and logos, represents classical persuasion. Appeals from advertising, such as humor, fear, music, and argumentum ad populum, represent the contemporary, but also are modern extensions of Aristotle’s triad. These concepts are then applied in such a way that the reader can see how they could use them to their benefit in influencing others. Each concept is defined and shown how it can be used in a spoken communicative way rather than a visual representation. Advertising appeals are typically put …

Painted Faces & Printed Music: Women And Music In The Paintings Of Bartolomeo Veneto And Sebastiano Florigerio, Lauren N. Rosenblatt Jan 2017

Painted Faces & Printed Music: Women And Music In The Paintings Of Bartolomeo Veneto And Sebastiano Florigerio, Lauren N. Rosenblatt

Theses and Dissertations

The cultural views surrounding musical performances by women rapidly changed during the sixteenth century. The ideal of the preceding century advised ladies of the court to avoid displaying the frivolous and sinful ways of music-making, but the new notion of the female courtier praised women for performing music, for it could only serve to enhance their beauty and virtue. These two opposing concepts can be seen simultaneously in treatises, correspondences, and artwork of this era. Artists’ depictions of courtesans included music to convey what was considered sensual and immoral; yet other works displayed music instruments as representations of women’s nobility …
