Dr. Samuel Sheppard name brought attention to the death of an Ohio penitentiary inmate. The inmate dies from drinking wood alcohol, Dr. Sheppard was on nurse duty at the time of his death. All nurses including Dr. Sheppard were cleared and transferred to other duties which is routine.

Dr. Sam Sheppard, serving a life sentence in the Ohio Penitentiary, was transferred from his hospital post at the prison, to the planing mill, after another inmate died of alcohol poisoning. Sheppard was eventually exonerated after it was determined the alcohol was most likely obtained from a different source than the hospital.

Assistant Prosecutor Saul S. Danaceau, announced today that the Sheppard case has been "reopened", as a result of a "tip" he heard from a West Virginia woman. She claimed to have knowledge that someone else was in the Sheppard home the night of the murder. Citing a manpower shortage, Mayor Celebrezze refused to assign any of the Cleveland Police to investigate the woman's story. Both Celebrezze and Story gave an indication that they also believed Danaceau was "playing politics" with the case.

Prosecutors filed an answer today with the U.S. Supreme Court of Washington, D.C., declaring Dr. Sam's appeal was based on "distortions of the facts".
