Are Two Heads Better Than One? Interpreting Students’ Moral Reasoning Skills, Robyn Dean, Vincent Samar, Daniel Maffia Jul 2022

Are Two Heads Better Than One? Interpreting Students’ Moral Reasoning Skills, Robyn Dean, Vincent Samar, Daniel Maffia

International Journal of Interpreter Education

The Defining Issues Test (DIT) is an internationally used instrument that measures an individual’s moral reasoning skills—that is, how an individual explains right and just action. DIT scores are correlated with age and education, and they are also correlated with clinical performance when administered to professional practitioners. Practicing signed language interpreters’ scores, however, were not reflective of their age and education in one study, being much lower than those of practitioners from other professions. Providing communication access for individuals who do not share the same language as their service providers is grounded in social justice and equity, yet practicing interpreters’ …

Characterizing The Decision Process In Setting Corn And Soybean Seeding Rates, David A. Hennessy, Alexander J. Lindsey, Yuyuan Che, Laura E. Lindsey, Maninder Pal Singh, Hongli Feng, Elizabeth M. Hawkins, Sakthi Subburayalu, Roy Black, Eric A. Richer, Daniel S. Ochs

The Journal of Extension

Selecting optimal corn and soybean seeding rates are difficult decisions to make. A survey of Ohio and Michigan farm operators finds that, although generally keen to learn from others, they tend to emphasize their own experience over outside information sources. Soybean growers declare university and extension recommendations as more important than do corn growers. In response to direct queries and in free comments, growers place more emphasis on understanding the agronomic and technological problems at hand than on adjusting to the market environment. Given the decision environment, we argue that these responses are reasonable.

The Development Of The Adaptable Self-Disclosure Scale (Asds): A Multidimensional Approach To Disclosure Assessment, Brandon Mcintyre Nov 2021

The Development Of The Adaptable Self-Disclosure Scale (Asds): A Multidimensional Approach To Disclosure Assessment, Brandon Mcintyre

All Dissertations

Understanding how individuals share or conceal parts of their identity has long been a topic of research with little consistency of measurement validation. The present study had three main goals: (1) define and conceptualize a multidimensional model of identity disclosure that can apply to any concealable identity, (2) generate a validated and adaptable scale for assessing any concealable identity, and (3) demonstrate the adaptability of this scale for a specific concealable identity. In Study 1, the proposed disclosure model was used to generate 72 items which were narrowed down using factor analysis to form the Adaptable Self-Disclosure Scale (ASDS). The …

Does Construction Service Provider's Response Matter? Understanding The Influence Of Anecdotal Information On Online Consumer Decisions, Arnal Ponathil, Amro Khasawneh, Kalyan Piratla, Sudeep Hegde

Open Access Publishing Fund

The home improvement service industry is growing rapidly, and the advancement in technology has made information about service providers, such as customer reviews, accessible with a few clicks. However, the impact of anecdotal information, like reviews and a service provider's response to a review, have not been studied extensively in the home improvement service industry. Using the Data Frame Theory of Sensemaking, this study investigated the combined effect of these two variables on an online consumer's decision. We recruited 360 participants through Qualtrics Research Services to participate in a 4∗3 between-subjects study. The findings suggest that when all reviews were …

Home improvement services industry are a multi-billion dollar industry with an ever increasing online presence as a result of advancements in technology. Such websites as Angie’s List, Thumbtack, and Home Advisor allow for information exchange between online consumers. Also known as Electronic Word of Mouth (eWOM), this information offers several advantages, for example quick dissemination and convenience; however, trust in such information is a key factor in consumer’s decision-making. With the increased use of eWOM in making decisions, it is important to investigate how consumers use the cues found on these websites, the research gap this dissertation addresses.Given the lack …

Risk Management In Translation: How Much Does It Really Explain?, Daniel Gile Aug 2021

Risk Management In Translation: How Much Does It Really Explain?, Daniel Gile

International Journal of Interpreter Education

While risk has always been part of translation, it was taken up as a distinct topic recently, with some confusion as to what the term actually covers and some problematic claims about its central role as a determinant of translation behavior and the links between risk and translation effort. It is argued that risk is more often a constraint than a driver of decisions, that the correlation between the magnitude of risk-associated loss and the number of problem-solving efforts can be weak, and that achievement-oriented decision making explains translatorial behavior better than risk management and is more compatible with professional …

Assessing The Value Extension Adds To Decision Making Among Natural Resources Leaders, Renata Rimsaite, Melissa M. Kreye Mar 2021

Assessing The Value Extension Adds To Decision Making Among Natural Resources Leaders, Renata Rimsaite, Melissa M. Kreye

The Journal of Extension

Extension professionals face challenges in quantifying the impact of their efforts in advancing the decision-making process in natural resource policy. We developed a flexible tool that measures the impact of improving decision makers’ planning efforts. The tool consists of two sets of survey questions that can be modified to fit an extension program’s goals. We illustrated how to use this tool by surveying leaders working with private forest owners to help advance natural resource management. However, the tool can be of use to extension professionals across various program areas.

Decision-Making Tree For Prioritizing Racial Equity In Resource Allocation, Jamie Bain, Noelle Harden, Stephanie Heim Oct 2020

Decision-Making Tree For Prioritizing Racial Equity In Resource Allocation, Jamie Bain, Noelle Harden, Stephanie Heim

The Journal of Extension

Within University of Minnesota Extension's health and nutrition program area, we created and are using a decision-making tree to prioritize our work with communities of color through equitable decision-making practices. The tool is currently used to help grant administrators winnow down a pool of applicants for a participatory grant-making program called the Action Learning Seed Fund. In this article, we draw on our experiences with creating and using the tool to explore its potential application for advancing equitable decision making in other areas of Extension work.

Integrating Emotional Intelligence Principles Into Extension Programming, Mia B. Russell, Shandi Andres, Carolyn Barnhart, Deb Andres Jun 2020

Integrating Emotional Intelligence Principles Into Extension Programming, Mia B. Russell, Shandi Andres, Carolyn Barnhart, Deb Andres

The Journal of Extension

Emotional intelligence is a learned ability that can bridge emotions and decision making to help improve Extension program participant outcomes. Because decision making is not based on information and facts alone, emotional intelligence has the power to transform the way individuals think about, plan, and execute behavior changes as well as make informed decisions. We introduce and discuss the applicability of a five-step emotional intelligence framework for Extension programming as a means for integrating emotional intelligence into programs to enhance program participant decision making.

Investigating Individual Differences In Action-Based Decision-Making, Aminah Roberts May 2020

Investigating Individual Differences In Action-Based Decision-Making, Aminah Roberts

All Theses

During high-stakes or high-threat situations, decisions must be made very quickly. Certain situational and individual difference factors can have an impact on decision-making under threat. In terms of situational effects, prior research demonstrates that threats that are perceived as farther away may allow for behavioral inhibition. Moreover, individual differences, such as low trait neuroticism and effective coping strategies, may play a mitigating role in the experience of threat, thereby increasing the likelihood of responding adaptively to the situation instead of being reactive. Consequently, the purpose of this study was to examine whether specific factors, including situational reappraisal, changes in target …

Addressing The Community Impact Of Forced Pooling On Local Drilling Decisions, Sarah Osmane, Timothy Kelsey Feb 2018

Addressing The Community Impact Of Forced Pooling On Local Drilling Decisions, Sarah Osmane, Timothy Kelsey

The Journal of Extension

Increased unconventional oil and gas development has created concerns about property right issues and land degradation problems for many U.S. landowners. Many states allow "forced pooling," which forces landowners to lease their lands to an operator, even if the owner disagrees, when a threshold is reached. Extension professionals need to provide relevant information to decision makers and other local stakeholders on the effects of forced pooling. This article examines how forced pooling laws can affect local voice. Findings suggest that the holders of decision-making power at the local level differ according to the forced pooling thresholds used.

Integrating Decision Aids To Enhance The Sensemaking Process Of Online Information Consumers In Social Media, Amal Pradeep Ponathil Dec 2017

Integrating Decision Aids To Enhance The Sensemaking Process Of Online Information Consumers In Social Media, Amal Pradeep Ponathil

All Theses

With the increase in the number of online review websites, electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) has become a vital information source for consumers. People share their views on the Internet in different forms from blogs to reviews on various websites. At the same time, people prefer to remain anonymous or use fake virtual identities for reasons extending from privacy to enjoyment. This freedom afforded by anonymity has led people to write posts without fully considering the potential consequences of their actions. Moreover, there is increasing concern about the trustworthiness of such posts as there is typically no editorial process for verification of …

Making Resourcefull™ Decisions: A Process Model For Civic Engagement, Barbara Radke, Scott Chazdon Aug 2015

Making Resourcefull™ Decisions: A Process Model For Civic Engagement, Barbara Radke, Scott Chazdon

The Journal of Extension

Many public issues are becoming more complex, interconnected, and cannot be resolved by one individual or entity. Research shows an informed decision is not enough. Addressing these issues requires authentic civic engagement (deliberative dialogue) with the public to reach resourceFULLTM decisions—a decision based on diverse sources of information and supported with resources (including human), competence, and commitment. The University of Minnesota Extension has developed a research-informed Model for Civic Engagement as a tool to describe a process for authentic civic engagement and support educational outreach. This article describes the Model and its applicability to educate on civic engagement.

Evaluation Of On-Board Photovoltaic Modules Options For Electric Vehicles, Mahmoud M. Abdelhamid Aug 2014

Evaluation Of On-Board Photovoltaic Modules Options For Electric Vehicles, Mahmoud M. Abdelhamid

Mahmoud M Abdelhamid

This paper presents an overview of different commercial photovoltaic (PV) module options to power on-board electric vehicles (EVs). We propose the evaluation factors, constraints, and the decision-making criteria necessary to assess the suitability of this PV module for this application. The incorporation of quality function deployment (QFD) and the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) is the decision-making methodology used in this study. Our approach is innovative and robust in that the evaluation depends upon data collected from PV manufactures datasheets. Unlike traditional research, a hybrid AHP and QFD innovative decision-making methodology has been created, and current commercial PV market data for …

Supply Chain Network Design: Risk-Averse Vs. Risk-Neutral Decision Making, Alireza Madadi Dec 2012

Supply Chain Network Design: Risk-Averse Vs. Risk-Neutral Decision Making, Alireza Madadi

All Dissertations

Recent events, such as the Heparin tragedy, highlight the necessity for designers and planners of supply chain networks to consider the risk of disruptions in spite of their low probability of occurrence. One effective way to hedge against supply chain network disruptions is to have a robustly designed supply chain network. This involves strategic decisions, such as choosing which markets to serve, which suppliers to source from, the location of plants, the types of facilities to use, and tactical decisions, such as production and capacity allocation. In this dissertation, we focus on models for designing supply chain networks that are …

Publications Highlight Science Communication Research For Busy Professionals, Joseph Crone

The Journal of Extension

Professionals, such as Extension personnel, who communicate with a range of non-specialists about scientific or technical information face particular challenges. A common goal of all such professionals is to effect at least some change in their audiences' understanding and perhaps in their actions. A key challenge for many of these professionals is a lack of familiarity with research relating to communicating and making decisions about scientific and technical topics. Public Science Communication Research and Practice, a series of publications from Oregon State University, is designed to identify, distill, and highlight useful social science research to help professionals communicate more effectively.

The Effects Of Weather Recognition Training On General Aviation Pilot Situation Assessment And Tactical Decision Making When Confronted With Adverse Weather Conditions, Chansik Kim Aug 2011

The Effects Of Weather Recognition Training On General Aviation Pilot Situation Assessment And Tactical Decision Making When Confronted With Adverse Weather Conditions, Chansik Kim

All Dissertations

Previous general aviation (GA) accident studies showed that decision errors were more associated with fatal GA accidents than other kinds of human errors, and weather related accidents, especially continued visual flight rules (VFR) flight into instrument meteorological conditions (IMC), remained the major cause of fatal GA accidents. Thus, finding the underlying causes of GA pilots' decision errors and continued VFR flight into adverse weather conditions are needed to reduce weather related GA accidents as well as fatal GA accidents.
Causal factors and hypotheses of weather related GA accidents show that knowledge, experience, motivation, and weather information frequently have been referred …

Complex Decision Support For Older Adults: Effects Of Information Visualization On Decision Performance, Margaux Price Dec 2010

Complex Decision Support For Older Adults: Effects Of Information Visualization On Decision Performance, Margaux Price

All Theses

Older adults are faced with complex decision tasks that impose high working memory demands. A representative task is choosing a prescription drug plan from a multitude of options that must be evaluated along many factors. The combined effect of the quantity of complex information, and reduced working memory capacity puts older adults at a disadvantage. However, research with younger adults suggests that the working memory burden of decision tasks can be reduced using well-designed, graphical decision aids (i.e., environmental supports). The current study examined the use of environmental supports to support complex decision-making for older adults. Two experiments were conducted; …

Who Is Worth What? Judge And Advisor Characteristics In A Paid-Advice Judgment Scenario, Benjamin Slade Aug 2010

Who Is Worth What? Judge And Advisor Characteristics In A Paid-Advice Judgment Scenario, Benjamin Slade

All Theses

When making a decision, people often receive advice before settling on a particular course of action. Decision makers exhibit a spectrum of responses to advice, ranging from total rejection to complete acceptance. The purpose of this study is to examine predictors of advice use within a Judge Advisor System (JAS: Sniezek & Buckley, 1995). Prior research has examined a variety of task characteristics, advisor characteristics, and decision maker characteristics (e.g. Bonaccio, 2007; Gino & Moore, 2007; Yaniv & Kleinberger, 2000). In this study, judge characteristics including confidence, accuracy, prior task knowledge, and other individual differences are examined. Advisor characteristics such …

The Journal of Extension

As Extension professionals, we are faced with the need to educate youth and adults about risk and to assess their preference for risk; however, many find the concepts difficult to illustrate. This article lays out a simple technique that can be used to illustrate how personal attitudes toward risk change with changes in situations. Youth and adults who participate in the exercise will have a better understanding of risk and their attitudes about risk, which will lead them to make personal choices that are right for them.

Modeling Systems For Optimal Resource Allocation, Scheduling, And Decision Making, Esengul Tayfur

All Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on the resource requirements and scheduling problem for logistic systems. We investigate solutions to this problem in two different logistic systems: logistic system of the health care facilities during emergency evacuations and delivery and distribution system of production industries. All hospitals must have an evacuation plan to ensure the safety of patients and prevent the loss of life. However, hospital operators have not been able to quantify how resource availability, the cost of acquiring those resources, and evacuation completion time are related. This research addresses this problem and contributes two methodologies to solve this problem. In the …
