Enhancing Both Cooperative Extension And National Environmental Education Resources, Martha C. Monroe Dec 2012

Enhancing Both Cooperative Extension And National Environmental Education Resources, Martha C. Monroe

The Journal of Extension

State Extension programs can contribute to the successful adoption of national environmental education programs by making locally relevant resources available, creating reference materials to bridge between 4-H project books and other resources, and developing companion materials that supplement national materials with local issues and resources. Such activities provide opportunities to integrate research and teaching with Extension programs and build productive relationships with agencies and organizations. Seven strategies with examples from one state are explained.

Using Digital Classrooms To Conduct 4-H Club Meetings, Patricia West, Nicholas E. Fuhrman, A Christian Morgan, Dennis W. Duncan Dec 2012

Using Digital Classrooms To Conduct 4-H Club Meetings, Patricia West, Nicholas E. Fuhrman, A Christian Morgan, Dennis W. Duncan

The Journal of Extension

Using computer technology and digital classrooms to conduct 4-H Club meetings is an efficient way to continue delivering quality 4-H programming during times of limited resources and staff. Nineteen Junior and Senior 4-H'ers participated in seven digital classroom workshops using the Wimba Classroom application. These digital classroom sessions were designed to improve Project Achievement development and increase competition scores. Eighteen of the nineteen 4-H participants increased Project Achievement scores by approximately 11%. Seven hours of travel time and 26 hours of instruction time were saved by utilizing digital classroom technology in a 3-month period.

Assessment Of Bio-Security Risks Associated With 4-H Animal Science Exhibition Practices In California, Martin H. Smith, Cheryl L. Meehan Jun 2012

Assessment Of Bio-Security Risks Associated With 4-H Animal Science Exhibition Practices In California, Martin H. Smith, Cheryl L. Meehan

The Journal of Extension

Bio-security related to animal agriculture is a high priority issue, and recent incidents demonstrate the potential for disease transmission and proliferation involving animals exhibited at public venues. Data collected at the California State Fair and eight county fairs in the north central region of California were used to assess existing bio-security risks associated with 4-H project animals. Outcomes revealed disease transmission risks associated with exhibition practices including housing and visitor contact and highlight the need to develop and provide relevant education resources to 4-H youth, volunteers, and staff.

The Need For Accurate Prediction Equations For The Carcass Lean Content Of Pigs, Allan P. Schinckel, Clinton P. Rusk Jun 2012

The Need For Accurate Prediction Equations For The Carcass Lean Content Of Pigs, Allan P. Schinckel, Clinton P. Rusk

The Journal of Extension

Prediction equations for pork carcass lean percentage are widely used in Extension, teaching, and research. Prediction equations using carcass or live animal measurements are used in carcass contests, live animal evaluation, and marketing. Fat–free lean gain is used to estimate the daily lysine requirements for pigs in swine nutrition guides. The use of inaccurate equations has substantial economic impact. Extension specialists must make the effort to confirm the accuracy of the equations they recommend for use. Standards of prediction accuracy and biases must be developed to assure that accurate equations are developed and recommended for industry use.

Identifying The Factors Influencing Professional Volunteer Leadership In The National Association Of Extension 4-H Agents, Alexa Lamm, Debbie Nistler, Nicole Stedman Apr 2012

Identifying The Factors Influencing Professional Volunteer Leadership In The National Association Of Extension 4-H Agents, Alexa Lamm, Debbie Nistler, Nicole Stedman

The Journal of Extension

Many Extension professional associations have had trouble getting members to participate in national leadership opportunities. The study reported here examined the perception of members of a national Extension professional organization (NAE4-HA) regarding specific leadership actions. It found the single act of taking on a leadership position alters individuals' perceptions of leadership, directly driving their desires to be involved or not. Creating a sense of belonging and inclusiveness with the general membership can greatly improve the quality of the leadership experiences these individuals have, reinforcing their desire to affiliate and identify with being part of an association at the national level.

4-H Participation And Science Interest In Youth, Katherine E. Heck, Ramona M. Carlos, Cynthia Barnett, Martin H. Smith Apr 2012

4-H Participation And Science Interest In Youth, Katherine E. Heck, Ramona M. Carlos, Cynthia Barnett, Martin H. Smith

The Journal of Extension

The study reported here investigated the impacts of participation in 4-H on young people's interest and participation in science. Survey data were collected from relatively large and ethnically diverse samples of elementary and high school-aged students in California. Results indicated that although elementary-grade 4-H members are not more interested in science than other youth, by high school, participation in 4-H is associated with a greater number of science classes and higher-level science coursework. These results suggest that the 4-H program may have the ability to influence science interest and participation in the long term among its members.

North Central Region 4-H Volunteers: Documenting Their Contributions And Volunteer Development, Pamela Larson Nippolt, Sue Pleskac, Vicki Schwartz, Doug Swanson Apr 2012

North Central Region 4-H Volunteers: Documenting Their Contributions And Volunteer Development, Pamela Larson Nippolt, Sue Pleskac, Vicki Schwartz, Doug Swanson

The Journal of Extension

Documenting volunteer contributions strengthens Extension partnerships with volunteers. A team of North Central Region 4-H volunteer specialists collaborated to conduct a study of 4-H volunteer contributions and impacts related to working with youth within the 4-H program. Over three thousand (3,332) 4-H volunteers from throughout the 12-state North Central Region completed the survey. Volunteers are critical partners to the success of 4-H, making it possible for millions of young people to have access to 4-H programs.
