Molecularly Bonded Inherently Conductive Polymers On Substrates And Shaped Articles Thereof, Shalaby W. Shalaby, Richard V. Gregory, Jacqueline M. Allan

Clemson Patents

Organic inherently conductive polymers, such as those based on polyaniline, polypyrrole and polythiophene, are formed in-situ onto polymeric surfaces that are chemically activated to bond ionically the conductive polymers to the substrates. The polymeric substrate is preferably a preshaped or preformed thermoplastic film, fabric, or tube, although other forms of thermoplastic and thermoset polymers can be used as the substrates for pretreatment using, most preferably, phosphonylation-based processes followed by exposure to an oxidatively polymerizable compound capable of forming an electrically conductive polymer. The resultant conductive surface imparts unique properties to the substrates and allows their use in antistatic clothing, surface …

Long-Wavelength Collective Excitations In A Two-Dimensional Spin-Polarized Electron Gas: A Phenomenological Theory, D C. Marinescu, J J. Quinn Dec 1998

Long-Wavelength Collective Excitations In A Two-Dimensional Spin-Polarized Electron Gas: A Phenomenological Theory, D C. Marinescu, J J. Quinn

Publications

The dispersion relations of the collective excitations induced in a 2D spin-polarized electron gas are derived within the framework of the Landau-Silin theory applied to a two-component Fermi liquid. The quasiparticle interaction is described by spin-dependent coefficients, which are parametric functions of the initial degree of polarization. The motion of the low-energy excitations satisfies a semiclassical transport equation solved consistently with the Maxwell equations for the electromagnetic field produced by spin and charge fluctuations. The long-wavelength limit of the self-sustained oscillations is analyzed as a function of the initial degree of polarization of the system, preset by a dc magnetic …

The Diffuse Gamma-Ray Background From Supernovae, Dieter H. Hartmann, K. Watanabe, M. D. Leising, L.-S. The

Publications

The diffuse extragalactic γ-ray background in the MeV region is believed to be due to photons from radioactivity produced in supernovae throughout the history of galaxies in the universe. In particular, γ-ray line emission from the decay chain 56Ni → 56Co → 56Fe provides the dominant photon source (Clayton & Silk 1969). Although iron synthesis occurs in all types of supernovae, the contribution to the background is dominated by Type Ia events due to their higher photon escape probabilities. Estimates of the star formation history in the universe suggest a rapid increase by a factor ∼ 10 from the present …

Insulation Material, Bobby Mal Phillips, Jackson Lee Nelson Nov 1998

Insulation Material, Bobby Mal Phillips, Jackson Lee Nelson

Clemson Patents

Disclosed are fibrous structures comprised of shaped fibers wherein the thickness of the compressed fibrous structure at 1.00 psi is .gtoreq.1.3 times that of a similar compressed structure having the same area density and made from round cross section fibers of the same dpf as the shaped fibers. The invention is useful in articles such as coats, gloves, boats, shoes, etc. made using the structures disclosed herein. The surprising feature of structures according to the present invention is the thickness retention at high pressures. This retained thickness under pressure translates directly into decreased heat transfer or improved insulation.

Process For Making And Incorporating Acquisition/Distribution Inserts Into Absorbent Cores, Nicholas Albert Ahr

Clemson Patents

An apparatus and process for assembling a first member and a second member is provided. The first member comprises a fluid distribution part and the second member comprises an absorbent core member having a window portion therein. The assembling apparatus comprises a conveyer mechanism for forming a transport path, a first deposition mechanism for placing a series of one of the first and second members in spaced apart relation on the conveyer mechanism, and a drum mechanism rotatably mounted adjacent the conveyer mechanism for carrying the other of the first and second members and for depositing the same onto one …

Collective Excitations In An Asymmetrically Spin-Polarized Quantum Well, D C. Marinescu, J J. Quinn Nov 1998

Collective Excitations In An Asymmetrically Spin-Polarized Quantum Well, D C. Marinescu, J J. Quinn

Publications

We present a phenomenological picture for the many-body excitations of a two-dimensional electron gas in a quantum well spin polarized by a dc magnetic field at an angle ␪ with the axis of the well. In the framework of the Landau theory of charged Fermi liquids, we determine the frequencies of collective modes by solving a transport equation for quasiparticles in the local electromagnetic field associated with the charge- and spin-density fluctuations. In the long-wavelength limit, analytic solutions for ␻(qជ) are obtained as functions of the degree of spin polarization and of the angle ␪.

A Statistical Treatment Of The Gamma-Ray Burst "No Host Galaxy" Problem: Ii. Energies Of Standard Candle Bursts, Dieter H. Hartmann, David L. Band, Bradley E. Schaefer

Publications

With the discovery that the afterglows after some bursts are coincident with faint galaxies, the search for host galaxies is no longer a test of whether bursts are at cosmological distances, but rather a test of particular cosmological models. The methodology we developed to investigate the original “no host galaxy” problem is equally valid for testing different cosmological models, and is applicable to the galaxies coincident with optical transients. We apply this methodology to a family of models where we vary the total energy of standard candle bursts. We find that total isotropic energies of E < 2 ×10^52 erg are ruled out while E ∼ 10^53 erg is favored.

Extraction Of Pigment From Plant Material, Ronald L. Thomas, Kathryn Diane Deibler, Charles Rice Barmore

Clemson Patents

The present invention is directed to a process for extracting pigments, namely carotenoids, from plant material. The process includes the step of combining shredded plant material with an enzyme. The enzyme breaks down the plants cellular walls releasing the carotenoids contained within the plant cells. The enzyme added to the plant material can be pectinase, cellulase, hemicellulase, or mixtures thereof.

Detection Of Silver In Metal-Poor Stars, James L. Crawford, Christopher Sneden, Jeremy R. King, Ann M. Boesgaard, Contantine P. Deliyannis Nov 1998

Detection Of Silver In Metal-Poor Stars, James L. Crawford, Christopher Sneden, Jeremy R. King, Ann M. Boesgaard, Contantine P. Deliyannis

Publications

The resonance lines of neutral silver appearing at 3280, 3382 Å in the near-ultraviolet spectral region have been identified on Keck I HIRES spectra of four halo stars with metallicities -1.3 ≥ [Fe/H] ≥ -2.2. This represents the first detection in metal-poor stars of an element in the atomic number range 41 ≤ Z ≤ 55. The mean relative silver abundance is [Ag/Fe] +0.2, with little star-to-star variation. Silver abundance upper limits in three other metal-poor stars are consistent with this mean value. The modest overabundance of silver is similar to the overabundances in this metallicity range exhibited by other …

Systems, Methods And Computer Program Products For Prediction Of Defect-Related Failures In Integrated Circuits, Mohamed S. Moosa, Kelvin F. Poole

Clemson Patents

Systems, methods and computer program products for predicting defect-related failures in integrated circuits produced by an integrated circuit fabrication process identify objects in a circuit layout for the integrated circuit design, each object having a location in the circuit layout and a reliability connectivity in the integrated circuit design. Sample object defects are generated for the identified objects, each sample object defect representing a defect produced in an object by the integrated circuit fabrication process and having a defect magnitude associated therewith. An accelerated life defect influence model is identified for each sample object defect, relating the lifetime of an …
