College students in California are unable to meet their basic needs for survival, leaving students across the state without consistent access to food, housing, and health care. Emergency programs and services, both public and private, exist on most college campuses to address students' basic needs. Unfortunately, due to the stigmatization of basic needs insecurities and a lack of widespread knowledge about these services, students who need help meeting their basic needs are not connecting with the programs and services on campus that can help them. This dissertation explores how information systems can improve the understanding of the home field advantage (HFA) in professional sports leagues in the United States. The literature related to the HFA conceptual framework and the game location factor—which represents four major impacts on teams (crowd, learning, travel, and rules)—led to an investigation into whether a relationship exists between game results and spatial, temporal, and stadium attributes. These stadium attributes include field surface type, roof type (i.e., open, fixed, and retractable), time zone, and field orientation (e.g., N/S, E/W, NE/SW) for U.S. professional sports such as soccer, baseball, and football. In 2015, The Claremont Colleges Library purchased a drone for its Emerging Technology Loan program. At the time, Federal Aviation Administration regulations were still in their infancy in regards to drone use in public and for teaching and research –lending wasn’t even a consideration. After three years of waiting for the regulations to catch up with the demand, The Claremont Colleges Library GIS Specialist was able to pilot a drone lending program that circulates both the drone and the GIS Specialist for course integration. Planning and regulatory environmental agency San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC) plays an important role in the permitting of development around the San Francisco Bay. As the agency works to add an environmental justice amendment to its primary policy document, this research explores the S.F. Bay Area’s history of approved development project proposal permits, and the associated patterns of land use and environmental justice implications in order to support the proposed change in permitting policy. Given my experiences as a young conservation advocate, I saw a need to teach students the importance of interconnectedness, cultural awareness and systems-thinking skills through a spatial lens. I believe these skills are required for holistic, equitable and sustainable conservation decision-making in local and international contexts. This thesis uses geospatial tools to teach conservation ecology vocabulary and concepts from high school environmental science curriculum in two online resources. In a time when Americans are waking up to the health consequences of consuming fast food, researchers have discovered that fast food restaurants seem to be located in greater concentrations near primary or secondary schools. While this phenomenon affects the food environments of some children and carries implications as to their short term and long term health (which has also been well researched), this paper focuses primarily on fast food restaurants that are within walking distance of schools.
