Towards Ethical Ai: Mathematics Influences Human Behavior, Dioneia M. Monte-Serrat, Carlo Cattani Aug 2023

Towards Ethical Ai: Mathematics Influences Human Behavior, Dioneia M. Monte-Serrat, Carlo Cattani

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

Mathematics plays an important role in the linguistic structure of artificial in- telligence (AI). We describe the linguistic process as a unique structure present both in human cognition and in cognitive computing. The close relationship with both AI and human cognition is due to this unique structure, which paves the way for AI to interfere with the behavior of those who interact with it. We highlight the role of mathematicians in designing algorithms—the core of the AI linguistic process—and in defining steps and instructions for AI. Because al- gorithms, through AI, interfere with the thought of those who interact with …

Just Mathematics: Getting Started Teaching Postsecondary Math For Social Justice, Kenan A. Ince Aug 2023

Just Mathematics: Getting Started Teaching Postsecondary Math For Social Justice, Kenan A. Ince

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

Following the summer 2020 civil rights movement and increasing attention to the intersections of mathematics with politics and power, many math educators have reported a desire to implement an antiracist pedagogy and to examine the intersections of their subject with issues of equity, inclusion, and social justice. Many resources exist for K-12 math educators interested in incorporating social justice into their curricula, but resources are comparatively scarce for college and university instructors (though this is changing quickly!). We discuss why one may want to teach mathematics for social justice, how to begin to implement issues of social justice into postsecondary …

Responsible Data Science For Genocide Prevention, Victor Piercey Aug 2023

Responsible Data Science For Genocide Prevention, Victor Piercey

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

The term "genocide" emerged out of an effort to describe mass atrocities committed in the first half of the 20th century. Despite a convention of the United Nations outlawing genocide as a matter of international law, the problem persists. Some organizations (including the United Nations) are developing indicator frameworks and “early-warning” systems that leverage data science to produce risk assessments of countries where conflict is present. These tools raise questions about responsible data use, specifically regarding the data sources and social biases built into algorithms through their training data. This essay seeks to engage mathematicians in discussing these concerns.

Dementia And The Fragility Of Self: Navigating Ethical Considerations In Medical Decision-Making, Grace Sauers Jan 2023

Dementia And The Fragility Of Self: Navigating Ethical Considerations In Medical Decision-Making, Grace Sauers

Scripps Senior Theses

As the global population ages, the incidence of degenerative memory disorders such as Alzheimer's and dementia is expected to rise. The frequency of complex medical decision-making challenges for these patients will subsequently increase. It is now common practice for patients to provide advance directives outlining the care they wish to receive; in the case they are deemed incompetent to perform adequate decision making. However, patients with dementia occasionally express wishes contrary to those stated in their advance directives. This divergence creates ambiguity about which wishes should be honored and for who those wishes are being honored for. I aim to …

A Defense Of Kantian Ethics Against Rigorism, Leyna Hong Jan 2023

A Defense Of Kantian Ethics Against Rigorism, Leyna Hong

CMC Senior Theses

Kantian ethics has prevailed as one of the most popular ethical theories due to its appeal to our moral intuitions. The good will is the good with the most intrinsic value, and respect for others as rational beings is at the core of the moral principles. Despite its appeal, Kantian Ethics faces some difficult challenges. One challenge with great force is that of rigorism. The charge is that the moral principles outlined by Kant should allow for exceptions; if they don't, Kantian ethics is too rigorous and inflexible to fit our moral intuitions.

One particular essay of Kant that has …

Moralize Through Sympathy: An Analysis Of Adam Smith’S Sentimentalist Moral Theory, Zhutao Li Jan 2023

Moralize Through Sympathy: An Analysis Of Adam Smith’S Sentimentalist Moral Theory, Zhutao Li

CMC Senior Theses

In this thesis, I present Hume’s and Smith’s sentimentalist theories as examples of a special type of moral framework that seeks normativity from human sentiments. Their theories are based the metaethical framework of expressivism: every normative judgment is an expression of approbation or resentment, and this statement becomes a moral rule if an impartial spectator can sympathize with the moral agent’s sentiments.

The concept of impartial spectator also faces the challenge of reinforcing systematic injustice. The influence of the dominant class, and their vested interest in continuing this oppression prevents people from accessing the full context of many situations. This …

Utilizing Machine Learning In Healthcare In An Ethical Fashion, Nishka Ayyar Jan 2023

Utilizing Machine Learning In Healthcare In An Ethical Fashion, Nishka Ayyar

CMC Senior Theses

This thesis paper explores the ethical considerations surrounding the use of machine learning (ML) solutions in healthcare. The background section discusses the basics of machine learning techniques and algorithms, and the increasing interest in their utilization in the healthcare sector. The paper then reviews and critically analyzes four studies that highlight concerns related to using ML in healthcare, including issues of bias, privacy, accountability, and transparency. Based on the analysis of these studies, the paper presents several recommendations for addressing these concerns. The paper concludes with a discussion on the potential benefits of using machine learning technology in healthcare. Ultimately, …
