Following the summer 2020 civil rights movement and increasing attention to the intersections of mathematics with politics and power, many math educators have reported a desire to implement an antiracist pedagogy and to examine the intersections of their subject with issues of equity, inclusion, and social justice. Many resources exist for K-12 math educators interested in incorporating social justice into their curricula, but resources are comparatively scarce for college and university instructors (though this is changing quickly!). Discipline is not simply a tool but a weapon — one that American educators have wielded for generations to regulate children and enforce habits of self-control and accountability. In a world where institutionalized forms of discrimination continue to plague judicial and educational systems alike, vis-à-vis the school-to-prison pipeline, the question must be asked: When does discipline stray beyond its intended purpose and into the realm of punishment? This thesis discusses the historical and contemporary implications of punitive discipline and its effects on students, particularly students of color and disabled students. This is a formative evaluation study of the California Primary Care Association's (CPCA) Leadership Equity Program, developed in response to the need for greater alignment between the communities accessing care provided by Community Health Centers and the representativeness of their future executive leaders. Community Health Centers (CHC) are a critical network of primary healthcare systems that deliver high-quality, comprehensive healthcare services to patients predominantly from under-resourced and marginalized communities of color. The study used a mixed-method concurrent triangulation design to describe how participants perceived the program achieved its goals and objectives using Kirkpatrick's Model and systems thinking.
