Design And Testing Of Novel Anthrax Vaccines Utilizing A Tobacco Mosaic Virus Expression System, Ryan C. Mccomb Dec 2015

Design And Testing Of Novel Anthrax Vaccines Utilizing A Tobacco Mosaic Virus Expression System, Ryan C. Mccomb

KGI Theses and Dissertations

Anthrax is a potentially fatal disease caused by the bacteria Bacillus anthracis. Infection and disease occur after spores gain entry into the body, germinate into vegetative bacteria, and produce toxin. Bacillus anthracis spores have been engineered as bioweapons and have been used repeatedly in warfare and terrorism to inflict casualties in military and civilian populations. Currently, only one vaccine has been approved for prevention of anthrax in the United States. This vaccine is an undefined product that is difficult to produce, requires a long vaccination schedule, and is reactogenic. Efforts to make an improved anthrax vaccine are being pursued. …

Coordinating Information Resources (With Reference On My Mind), Madelynn Dickerson

Library Staff Publications and Research

This poster presentation explores the ways reference and technical services staff can work together to build strong, user-centered collections and best serve student and faculty patrons. It highlights the professional path of the author during a transition from public services to technical services in a newly created position: information resources coordinator.

The challenge is twofold: 1) how to apply reference services expertise to a new scope of responsibility that includes collection analysis and management of print and electronic resources, and 2) how to build collaborative and meaningful relationships with reference and teaching librarians in order to best evaluate existing and …

A Note On Practical Approximate Projection Schemes In Signal Space Methods, Xiaoyi Gu, Deanna Needell, Shenyinying Tu Nov 2015

A Note On Practical Approximate Projection Schemes In Signal Space Methods, Xiaoyi Gu, Deanna Needell, Shenyinying Tu

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

Compressive sensing (CS) is a new technology which allows the acquisition of signals directly in compressed form, using far fewer measurements than traditional theory dictates. Recently, many socalled signal space methods have been developed to extend this body of work to signals sparse in arbitrary dictionaries rather than orthonormal bases. In doing so, CS can be utilized in a much broader array of practical settings. Often, such approaches often rely on the ability to optimally project a signal onto a small number of dictionary atoms. Such optimal, or even approximate, projections have been difficult to derive theoretically. Nonetheless, it has …

Convergence Properties Of The Randomized Extended Gauss-Seidel And Kaczmarz Methods, Anna Ma, Deanna Needell, Aaditya Ramdas Nov 2015

Convergence Properties Of The Randomized Extended Gauss-Seidel And Kaczmarz Methods, Anna Ma, Deanna Needell, Aaditya Ramdas

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

The Kaczmarz and Gauss-Seidel methods both solve a linear system Xβ=y by iteratively refining the solution estimate. Recent interest in these methods has been sparked by a proof of Strohmer and Vershynin which shows the randomized Kaczmarz method converges linearly in expectation to the solution. Lewis and Leventhal then proved a similar result for the randomized Gauss-Seidel algorithm. However, the behavior of both methods depends heavily on whether the system is under or overdetermined, and whether it is consistent or not. Here we provide a unified theory of both methods, their variants for these different settings, and draw connections between …

The Room Without A View, Antione L. Leonard Nov 2015

The Room Without A View, Antione L. Leonard

CGU MFA Theses

My work excites conversation about the creation of aesthetic sensations on the human eye while confronting ideas about the pervasive effects of beauty on the mind, body, and emotional sensitivities. Imagination is integral to my work, both in terms of how I make paintings and how they demand to be seen by viewers. I create individuality with the use of an anti-institutional spray paint next to institutional oil paint. I search my everyday lived experiences to find information that has been taken for granted to enhance my art, through natural behaviors within and outside of my studio environment, physically drawing …

Interpret The Numbers: Putting E-Book Usage Statistics In Context, Maria Savova, Madelynn Dickerson Nov 2015

Interpret The Numbers: Putting E-Book Usage Statistics In Context, Maria Savova, Madelynn Dickerson

Library Staff Publications and Research

E-books have been an integral part of library collections for a long time now, but they are still surrounded by controversy. How much our patrons really use them? That seemingly simple question has a very complicated answer that could depend on a number of factors. The e-books’ usage reports mean very little on their own and leave many unanswered questions. In order to contextualize the usage statistics, the Claremont Colleges Library conducted an analysis of enhanced usage reports in comparison with the total offerings of e-book content available to our users from all major providers, and through all access models. …

Hazzar Samman, Hazzar Samman

CGU MFA Theses

If a single object can be transformed to a new or different form, then it’s possible that everything can change. I believe that art is most effective when it is based on re-used or recycled objects. Transformation is built in. It is both literal and poetic.

The Off-Board String On The Medieval Fiddle, Linda Marie Zaerr Nov 2015

The Off-Board String On The Medieval Fiddle, Linda Marie Zaerr

Performance Practice Review

Drawing on explicit descriptions, iconographic representations, and contemporary narrative, this essay analyzes playing techniques and repertories plausible for one type of medieval fiddle and suggests that notions of historical fiddle performance may need to expand to accommodate the aesthetics and techniques implied by the off-board fiddle.

While it has been widely assumed that the left thumb was used to pluck the laterally divergent string described by Jerome of Moravia, the complete body of evidence suggests an alternative interpretation: the thumb can be used to stop this off-board string, extending the melodic range of the instrument down to a step below …

Dda In Context: Defining A Comprehensive Ebook Acquisition Strategy In An Access-Driven World, Jason S. Price, Maria Savova Nov 2015

Dda In Context: Defining A Comprehensive Ebook Acquisition Strategy In An Access-Driven World, Jason S. Price, Maria Savova

Library Staff Publications and Research

Internet-based technology has birthed a variety of ebook acquisition modes that differ significantly in number of accessible titles per acquisition dollar. We review these acquisition modes and argue that it is crucial for libraries to define a well-reasoned, comprehensive acquisition strategy that represents their optimal mix of all six modes. Each library’s strategy should reflect its institutional priorities relative to five key factors (choice of content and quality, discount, ease of use, permanence, and cost predictability) and integrate three complementary tactics (relating to subscription, demand-driven acquisition, and ebook approval plans) rather than rejecting one or more acquisition modes on principle. …

Small Molecule Inhibitor Design For Anaplastic Lymphoma Kinase Inhibition, Theodore D. Hansel, David J. Grabovsky Oct 2015

Small Molecule Inhibitor Design For Anaplastic Lymphoma Kinase Inhibition, Theodore D. Hansel, David J. Grabovsky

Interface Compendium of Student Work

The Anaplastic Lymphoma Kinase (ALK) gene has been linked to tumorigenesis in a number of human cancers, including anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) and neuroblastoma. While ALK mutations in ALCL and many other cancers occur as a result of gene fusions with wild type kinase domains, those in neuroblastoma stem from single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the kinase domain. These lead to autophosphorylation and constitutive signaling by ALK for cell growth and division, ultimately causing cancer. Crizotinib, an ATP-competitive ALK inhibitor, has proven to be an effective inhibitor of both ALKWT and ALKMutant kinase domains, and is in the middle …

On Montel And Montel–Popoviciu Theorems In Several Variables, Asuman Güven Aksoy, Jose M. Almira Oct 2015

On Montel And Montel–Popoviciu Theorems In Several Variables, Asuman Güven Aksoy, Jose M. Almira

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

We present an elementary proof of a general version of Montel’s theorem in several variables which is based on the use of tensor product polynomial interpolation. We also prove a Montel-Popoviciu’s type theorem for functions f:Rd→Rf:Rd→R for d > 1. Furthermore, our proof of this result is also valid for the case d = 1, differing in several points from Popoviciu’s original proof. Finally, we demonstrate that our results are optimal.

“Bound To Them By A Common Sorrow”: African American Women, Higher Education, And Collective Advancement, Linda M. Perkins Oct 2015

“Bound To Them By A Common Sorrow”: African American Women, Higher Education, And Collective Advancement, Linda M. Perkins

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

This essay examines African American women’s access to higher education in the United States before and after the founding of the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH) in 1915. The efforts of leading educated African American women to ensure their sisters were provided more educational opportunities will be examined, as well as their roles in the leadership of African American higher education. Utilizing the black feminist theory of intersectionality focusing on race, gender, and class, the emphasis in this essay is on the purposes and the types of secondary and higher education African American women obtained …

Screen Assault, Julie Orr Sep 2015

Screen Assault, Julie Orr

The STEAM Journal

My work is both a commentary on the pervasive societal ills of disposability and detachment in contemporary culture and an active participant in the same environment it criticizes. I demonstrate my simultaneous revulsion and fascination with disposable goods. I photograph myself with such chemically toxic substances as cosmetics, sodas and cleaning products, speaking to their harmful nature while also reveling in their shimmering color. Their clever design is no accident and I find myself giving into the marketing seduction. The same goes for such other harmful behaviors as obsessive use of cell phones and social media, and rabid consumption of …

Macromolecules And Monologues: How Science And Arts Classes Motivate Students For College, Alejandra Acosta Sep 2015

Macromolecules And Monologues: How Science And Arts Classes Motivate Students For College, Alejandra Acosta

The STEAM Journal

This study investigates how science and performing arts classes motivate high school students, particularly students of color, to pursue higher education. The changes in funding and perceived importance of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) vs. Visual Performing Arts (VPA) classes and programs, as well as the underrepresentation of students of color in these areas, make this topic important. Existing literature independently examines the positive effects of science and arts classes on student success but fails to compare the benefits of these programs and to include the student voice. Through the use of participant observation, questionnaires, and interviews, this study …

The STEAM Journal

Is This Art?

Fringe Exhibitions began in 1999 as an independent curatorial practice. My primary area of research was the intersection of art, science, and technology. I decided go this route because I was interested in finding a way to engage the contemporary art audience. I was inspired by Eduardo Kac, an artist I first worked with as a curator on an exhibition featuring his “Holopoems”. I continued working for several more years organizing exhibitions in university art museums and galleries where support for this type of interdisciplinary work and experimentation was well received and encouraged. The research I conducted …

The Actor: An Emotional Science, Jake Lane Bassi Sep 2015

The Actor: An Emotional Science, Jake Lane Bassi

The STEAM Journal

Acting is a form of storytelling through the given circumstances in the story. A truly good actor unleashes very controlled energy into a powerful emotional roller coaster that takes physical and mental tolls on the body much how real emotions can affect our behavior and drain our energy; such as being exhausted after a strong verbal disagreement with a loved one or dealing with grief from losing someone close.
