Modeling Residence Time Distribution Of Chromatographic Perfusion Resin For Large Biopharmaceutical Molecules: A Computational Fluid Dynamic Study, Kevin Vehar Dec 2020

Modeling Residence Time Distribution Of Chromatographic Perfusion Resin For Large Biopharmaceutical Molecules: A Computational Fluid Dynamic Study, Kevin Vehar

KGI Theses and Dissertations

The need for production processes of large biotherapeutic particles, such as virus-based particles and extracellular vesicles, has risen due to increased demand in the development of vaccinations, gene therapies, and cancer treatments. Liquid chromatography plays a significant role in the purification process and is routinely used with therapeutic protein production. However, performance with larger macromolecules is often inconsistent, and parameter estimation for process development can be extremely time- and resource-intensive. This thesis aimed to utilize advances in computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modeling to generate a first-principle model of the chromatographic process while minimizing model parameter estimation's physical resource demand. Specifically, …

The Shape Of Metabolism: Mitochondrial Dynamics, Remodeling, And Bioenergetic Reprogramming In Disease, Carl Decker Jul 2020

The Shape Of Metabolism: Mitochondrial Dynamics, Remodeling, And Bioenergetic Reprogramming In Disease, Carl Decker

KGI Theses and Dissertations

Mitochondria are dynamic, double-membrane bound hubs of bioenergetics, cell signaling, and redox balance that exist as an oscillating network of fused superstructures and smaller, single organelles. Importantly, their position at the junction of catabolic and anabolic metabolism connects these morphological fluctuations to larger cellular metabolic programs, which in turn have implicated mitochondrial dynamics in a number of disease states and a varied set of cell phenomena. For example, differentiation of memory t-cells is dependent on mitochondrial network morphology, and in particular on remodeling dynamics that yield fused mitochondrial assemblies favoring oxidative phosphorylation-driven metabolism. In contrast, many cancers have been shown …

Intimate, Jason Brewer May 2020

Intimate, Jason Brewer

CGU MFA Theses

I’ve used the paint as a substitute for myself to engage viewers to identify their interpretations and similar experience with emotional and mental states. Using texture and movement with the strokes of paint that mimics gestures of, and colors associate with, the mental states in order to present a visual sensory of emotions and psychological states; like the gravity of being in a depressed state, the itchiness and blood red feelings of frustration, the emptiness of being alone, the encroaching pressure of stress, and the weightless haze of confusion. The paintings become an intimate bridge between individuals and a sense …

Which "Me" Am I Going To Be Today? Exploring Genetic Counselors' Attitudes On Expressing Their "Authentic Self" In The Workplace, Brynna Nguyenton May 2020

Which "Me" Am I Going To Be Today? Exploring Genetic Counselors' Attitudes On Expressing Their "Authentic Self" In The Workplace, Brynna Nguyenton

KGI Theses and Dissertations

While professional organizations expect their employees to adhere to a cohesive image based on the social contract of professionalism, the modern workplace is growing increasingly diverse and freedom of self-expression is challenged by these traditionally defined norms. This study seeks to define these societal expectations and their implications in the context of a rapidly changing professional landscape. Individuals portray their true identities, or “authentic selves,” through their internal beliefs and external appearance, so naturally, these expressions may contradict the expectations for their professional appearance. Previous research has investigated professionalism, authentic selfhood, and the genetic counseling profession on separate levels, but …

The Psychosocial Effects Of Unexpected Findings On Direct To Consumer Genetic Testing, Emily Wiseman May 2020

The Psychosocial Effects Of Unexpected Findings On Direct To Consumer Genetic Testing, Emily Wiseman

KGI Theses and Dissertations

Direct to Consumer (DTC) genetic testing has grown in popularity since its inception in 2010. Consumers can now order DTC tests giving them more information on their ancestry, health and ethnicity than ever before. With more information and more consumers taking the tests, this has allowed for the opportunity of unexpected findings to be generated from the tests. Previous studies have shown that consumers can learn about a health risk they were previously unaware of, and this can impact the health management and surveillance practices of consumers receiving them. Additionally, studies have shown that ethnicity results can impact consumers’ previously …

Risk Reducing Mastectomies Among Women With Mutations In Moderate Penetrance Breast Cancer Susceptibility Genes, Jacob Comeaux May 2020

Risk Reducing Mastectomies Among Women With Mutations In Moderate Penetrance Breast Cancer Susceptibility Genes, Jacob Comeaux

KGI Theses and Dissertations

Women who harbor mutations in breast cancer susceptibility genes are at an increased lifetime risk of developing breast cancer and are faced with decisions about managing their risks, including the decision of whether to undergo a risk reducing mastectomy (RRM). While decision making for risk management has been studied extensively for BRCA1 and BRCA2 carriers, there is much less information surrounding risk management for women with mutations in moderate penetrance genes. This is a retrospective study of 280 women undergoing genetic counseling at a Los Angeles-based academic hospital between 2009 and 2019. The study used medical records to examine rates …

Cancer Genetic Counselors’ Perceptions Of Nutritional Recommendations, Breann Reinsch May 2020

Cancer Genetic Counselors’ Perceptions Of Nutritional Recommendations, Breann Reinsch

KGI Theses and Dissertations

Objective: The purpose of this research study is to understand the perspectives of genetic counselors who work with patients in the cancer setting and explore if nutrition is a consideration when counseling patients.

Background: Evidence on the influence of nutrition on cancer risk is increasing with retrospective cohort studies. The American Cancer Society states that smoking, body mass index (BMI), poor nutrition, and excess alcohol consumption are directly linked to cancer occurrences, therefore some cancers may be preventable through lifestyle changes (American Cancer Society, 2016). In cancer genetic counseling sessions, patients are often inquiring about nutritional recommendations. A majority of …

Tenacity, Order & Disorder, Lucy Manalo May 2020

Tenacity, Order & Disorder, Lucy Manalo

CGU MFA Theses

My work is about empowerment. The idea of using metal comes from my past experience as a welder/machinist in the Air Force. Metal is a tough medium and I believe it conveys the themes of strength and tenacity through it’s materiality.

Identifying The Gap: Cancer Genetic Counseling And Testing For Underinsured Patients, Bailey Sanderson May 2020

Identifying The Gap: Cancer Genetic Counseling And Testing For Underinsured Patients, Bailey Sanderson

KGI Theses and Dissertations

Background: Health care costs have increased faster than Consumer Price Index leading to patients weighing their options of medical treatment and services. One such service, genetic counseling, has grown 20% annually, in part due to the increased demand of genetic testing. Oncology care is one need for testing because 5-15% of all cancer diagnoses in the United States are inherited. Due to the fact that the Affordable Care Act does not cover all genetic counseling testing needs, and ethnic minorities are less likely to seek testing due to insurance coverage and costs, an increased effort is needed to reach …

The Impact Of Genetic Counseling On Direct-To-Consumer And Patient-Initiated Testing, Jennifer Hull May 2020

The Impact Of Genetic Counseling On Direct-To-Consumer And Patient-Initiated Testing, Jennifer Hull

KGI Theses and Dissertations

Direct-to-consumer (DTC) testing provides consumers access to genetic testing without involvement or advice from a genetics specialist. While the expansion of DTC testing has increased consumer access to genetic interpretations, these reports can often provide a false sense of security and rarely cover enough genetic information to make significant interpretations about disease risk. Patient-initiated testing involves consumers seeking out and ordering more comprehensive genetic testing on a cash pay basis. A patient’s self-reported medical and family history is reviewed by a clinician before the test is ordered. These tests are often similar to clinically ordered genetic tests, including large panels …

Rhythms Of Light, Jessica R. Csanky May 2020

Rhythms Of Light, Jessica R. Csanky

CGU MFA Theses

My works are visual expressions of a true love for movement, rhythm, and saturated color. In making art, I present lived experiences that are rendered abstract. These formal representations originate from an energetic space or sensory association and express a connection to places I have been, whether physically or emotionally.

Integral to my practice is the uninhibited exploration of materials and tools. I am committed to deepening my understanding of what paint can do when combined with drawing and installation techniques.

My compositions address architecture, landscape, memory, as well as psychological and physical spaces that we move through during our …

Still Spring Was Spring, Qianqian Yang Mar 2020

Still Spring Was Spring, Qianqian Yang

CGU MFA Theses

The works came out of an exploration of looking, time and place. A strange tension always occurred to me every time I returned home. For a month, I resumed my early morning schedule in high school on a daily basis. The route between school and home constructs most of my memories in the city. The practice of repeating the old routine is my way of trying to understand my relationship with this place, to probe into the separation and intimacy that constantly contradict within me. What has kept you away and brought you back, why, I ask myself. Relying on …

Hail Mother, Sydney Walters Mar 2020

Hail Mother, Sydney Walters

CGU MFA Theses

My work disrupts two kinds of power: gender roles in religious practices, and the perceived power of a ritual object. Constructions of gender and power are thrown onto a stage and cast in a sincere parody that ultimately liberates underrepresented people to perform with agency.

My larger-than-life figures examine who holds power in religious institutions. The figures challenge the intelligibility of their identity because she/they are dressed in religious regalia. In Western Catholicism, maleness is the pre-requisite for priesthood. These church leaders are distinguished by wielding specific religious regalia: i.e. the Ring of the Fisherman, Episcopal gloves, and globus crucigur. …

What If Anything Still Meant Something, Andrea Munive Mar 2020

What If Anything Still Meant Something, Andrea Munive

CGU MFA Theses

My drawings are active reflections of my surroundings and their intrinsic relationship to the ideal and banal. My surroundings have encompassed my memories and present, revealing a sense of slow time and peripheral consciousness.

What If Anything Still Meant Something is about this duality of care and disregard- an eternal mental state it seems.

Capacity, Rachel Baydian Feb 2020

Capacity, Rachel Baydian

CGU MFA Theses

This Master of Fine Arts Thesis Exhibition by Rachel Baydian is an installation of ceramic sculptures that function as a stand-in for the human body, touching on relationship, interconnectivity, and imperfection. Using abstracted forms that derive from the earth, these art objects are sculpted to mimic nature and its processes. The work highlights our human connection to nature as integrative and vital. Through experience and tactility, there is more of an awareness of space and heightened senses. The work taps into the awe and seduction of the mystery of nature through seemingly ordinary elements of the physical world.

Pascal's Mystic Hexagon In Tropical Geometry, Hanna Hoffman Jan 2020

Pascal's Mystic Hexagon In Tropical Geometry, Hanna Hoffman

HMC Senior Theses

Pascal's mystic hexagon is a theorem from projective geometry. Given six points in the projective plane, we can construct three points by extending opposite sides of the hexagon. These three points are collinear if and only if the six original points lie on a nondegenerate conic. We attempt to prove this theorem in the tropical plane.

Crawl Space: Driving Over The Anthropocene In A Jeep, Michael Pesses Jan 2020

Crawl Space: Driving Over The Anthropocene In A Jeep, Michael Pesses

CGU Theses & Dissertations

The automobile has long been directly and indirectly connected to human conceptions of nature, yet few studies linger with the act of driving as a practice that contributes to how nature is experienced. I argue that a more nuanced understanding of automobility is necessary for any scholars who study both social practices and environmental sustainability. Following the work of the human geographer Doreen Massey, I explore how relations between humans and non-humans, the social and the natural, ideology and practice work together to produce places specific to space and time. I also argue that American automobility is not simply transportation, …

Idealism In Spinoza’S Metaphysics, Epistemology, And Ethics: A Friendly And Judicious Revision To The Active/Passive Distinction As Solution To Spinoza’S Attribute And Parallelism Problems, Sean Butler Jan 2020

Idealism In Spinoza’S Metaphysics, Epistemology, And Ethics: A Friendly And Judicious Revision To The Active/Passive Distinction As Solution To Spinoza’S Attribute And Parallelism Problems, Sean Butler

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Spinoza’s doctrine of parallelism admits of certain observed inconsistencies that have long troubled Spinoza scholars. The scholarship over the last one hundred and thirty years or so has offered three dominant interpretations of Spinoza’s metaphysics as a result of the deficiencies with the doctrine of parallelism. These are 1) the subjective/objective distinction according to which the attribute of thought is understood as subjective and the attribute of extension is understood as objective, 2) materialism according to which the attribute of thought is claimed to depend on the attribute of extension, and 3) idealism according to which the attribute of extension …

Modeling, Designing And Applying Machine Learning Algorithms For Driver Drowsiness Detection, Mohsen Babaeian Jan 2020

Modeling, Designing And Applying Machine Learning Algorithms For Driver Drowsiness Detection, Mohsen Babaeian

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Driver drowsiness has been a significant hazard resulting in various traffic accidents. Therefore, monitoring this condition is crucial not only in alerting drivers, but also in avoiding fatal accidents. Many research studies propose new systems to reduce the number of drowsiness-related injuries and fatalities. The ultimate goal for a drowsiness detection system is to detect the drowsiness on time and minimize the system or environment errors to avoid false readings, such as studying physiological signal processing patterns. These potentially life-saving systems must operate in a timely manner with the highest precision. Researchers proposed various methods based on driving pattern changes, …

Let’S Get Strategic: An Exploration Of The How-To’S, What-Not-To-Do’S, And Promising Upshots Of Strategic Evaluation Initiatives, Kathleen Doll Jan 2020

Let’S Get Strategic: An Exploration Of The How-To’S, What-Not-To-Do’S, And Promising Upshots Of Strategic Evaluation Initiatives, Kathleen Doll

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Strategic planning has been both studied and utilized for decades in the business management sphere with high levels of success (Wolf & Floyd, 2017). More recently the act of strategic planning has been translated to the public sector, ushering in a wave of perceived benefits for organizational performance and learning (Bryson, Edwards, & Van Slyke, 2018). Extrapolation from these other fields suggests that strategic planning may be a mechanism to improve the practice of program evaluation (Preskill & Mack, 2013). While there are a few guiding frameworks for strategic evaluation planning initiatives, these frameworks have not been systematically documented or …

Visualizing Girlhood: Visibility And The Power Of The Black Girl Gaze To Understand Adolescent Girls’ Identity, Darielle Blevins Jan 2020

Visualizing Girlhood: Visibility And The Power Of The Black Girl Gaze To Understand Adolescent Girls’ Identity, Darielle Blevins

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Black feminist scholars have highlighted the various ways Black women and girls are rendered invisible throughout many U.S. institutions. In the past few years, advocates have called attention to the ways gendered-racialized biases contribute to the punitive and dehumanizing treatment of Black girls in school. This study will demonstrate how Black adolescent girls negotiate their identity at school through the creation of self-portraits. By using dual self-portraits, in which girls are able to express their own perspective and imagine the perspective of their teacher, Black adolescent girls are allowed the space to explore the relationship between power, culture and their …

Beyond Language: Critical And Sustainable Sociocultural Competence In A Dual Language Program, Verónica González Jan 2020

Beyond Language: Critical And Sustainable Sociocultural Competence In A Dual Language Program, Verónica González

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Despite the ideological controversies and political backlash that surround the field of bilingual education in the United States, current research indicates a growing interest in dual language (DL) programs—an additive bilingual education model. However, this growing interest has been accompanied by inequities in the implementation of DL programs that negatively affect minoritized students. One recommendation is for DL programs to center equity through sociocultural competence—the third goal of DL education (Howard et al., 2018). Through an analysis of administrator and teacher interviews, school documents, and field observations, this single case study examines educators’ ideologies and practices in regards to sociocultural …

(Un)Social Media: A Content Analysis Of The Centralized Self On Twitter, Julianna Jeanine Kirschner Jan 2020

(Un)Social Media: A Content Analysis Of The Centralized Self On Twitter, Julianna Jeanine Kirschner

CGU Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation critically assesses the social media posts that create, give life to and finally abandon trending topics on Twitter. Drawing on Baudrillard’s (1983) notion of simulacrum, the dissertation examines posts as performative discourse that reframes the trend within the personal simulacrum of the poster. Using digital humanities tools, a corpus of 102,532 tweets have been collected. A content analysis was performed to analyze themes and term frequency. Selected case studies indicated that posters persistently centered their online identity within content, reframing content as personal performance rather than dialogic engagement. The first case study examines social media posts responding to …

The Marches Of Alberico De Caprio (1865-1943): Director Of The Los Angeles Gas And Electric Company Band And Portland Rose Festival Band, Ali A. Memarian Jan 2020

The Marches Of Alberico De Caprio (1865-1943): Director Of The Los Angeles Gas And Electric Company Band And Portland Rose Festival Band, Ali A. Memarian

CGU Theses & Dissertations

The marches of Alberico De Caprio are themselves a history of the early 20th century American West, and the archetypal immigrant story long missing among famed American bandleaders. Significant pieces include the official anthem of the Los Angeles County Fair, Portland Rose Festival, score for a Paramount Pictures pre-code era feature film and a march written for President Theodore Roosevelt. This dissertation will expand scholarship on band music by giving a detailed biography of De Caprio and the ensembles under his direction, a list of his marches, and editions of six of his most historically significant marches.

A Sermon Writ In High Heaven: Astrology And Interpretation In Moby-Dick, Amanda Gallop Jan 2020

A Sermon Writ In High Heaven: Astrology And Interpretation In Moby-Dick, Amanda Gallop

Scripps Senior Theses

This thesis explores Herman Melville's use of astrology in Moby-Dick in relation to the novel's stance on meaning-making and interpretation. It analyzes Ishmael and Ahab's respective methods of interpretation established in the first half of the novel, then explores Stubb's use of astrology in "The Doubloon" chapter. I propose that Stubb's astrological soliloquy poses a potential solution to the conflict between Ishmael and Ahab's diametrically opposed methods, thus offering an avenue into a new understanding of the novel's epistemological project.

Black Resistance: Interpretive Agency Enacted Against Mutable Violence, Meera Kolluri Jan 2020

Black Resistance: Interpretive Agency Enacted Against Mutable Violence, Meera Kolluri
