Lau Kar Leung was a third generation disciple of the historical Wong Fei Hung, the most important real life kung fu expert from Southern China who became the basis for the first black and white kung fu films made in Hong Kong. Wong Fei Hung was an expert in Hung Gar kung fu (an adaptation of the Shaolin Tiger style). Wong Fei Hung taught many pupils, the most well-known was Lam Sai Wing, who then taught Lau’s father Lau Charn, who then taught Lau Kar Leung. “Out of abundance, give to the poor.” Such was the Gospel precept of Italian Methodist minister, Rev. Antonio Arrighi in establishing the Anson Phelps Stokes Italian Free Library in 1894 in NYC. My talk will demonstrate the connection that existed between his Protestant missionary work and this immigrant library collection.

The library opened in July 1894 in a stately building on Mulberry Street. Housing more than 3,000 books and newspapers in both Italian and English, it was funded entirely by the wealthy donor’s wife, Helen Louisa Stokes. Both she and Arrighi desired to see such a library serving the Italian …

Transitioning from OPAC to Primo is an extra challenge when the catalog is full of e-books and e-resources which date from before Primo. When you're part of a large consortium and there are multiple copies of those e-resource records in the catalog, the problem is compounded.

This presentation explains, for catalogers, the strategies used at CUNY to improve e-resource results in Primo (while keeping OPAC fans happy a little longer).
