Pre-Saccadic Modulation Of The Visually Evoked Potential, Leslie Guadron
Dissertations and Theses
Saccades are rapid eye movements that allow us to focus the fovea on different parts of our visual environment. Many psychophysical studies have shown that subjects can discriminate stimuli presented at the saccadic target better than at any other location before an eye movement is made. It is believed that covert attention allotted to the intended destination of a saccade, called pre-saccadic attention, accounts for the improved discrimination of stimuli. Covert top-down attention, which consists of orienting your attention, and not your gaze, to an object in your visual periphery, is known to facilitate behavioral performance in a manner similar …
Simultaneous Adsorption Of 11 Volatile Organic Compounds By An Activated Carbon Made From Polystyrene Sulfonic Acid-Based Organic Salt, Alejandro Smith
Simultaneous Adsorption Of 11 Volatile Organic Compounds By An Activated Carbon Made From Polystyrene Sulfonic Acid-Based Organic Salt, Alejandro Smith
Dissertations and Theses
Activated carbon is used in water treatment worldwide due to its ability to adsorb many different contaminants from water. The high adsorption capacity of activated carbon is linked to its high internal surface area and micro/meso- porosity. In this work an activated carbon obtained from polystyrene sulfonic acid-based organic salt was examined to simultaneously adsorb eleven volatile organic compounds from aqueous solution. Adsorption data were modeled with different isotherms to determine the equilibrium adsorptive capacities for these compounds. The performance of the polymer-based activated carbon was then compared with that of a commercial wood-based activated carbon. The results indicate that …

"At Paul Strand’s birth in 1890, the Gold Coast was an important West African colony of the British Empire.1 By 1963, when Strand, then an older statesman of modern photography, made his second of three trips to photograph Africa, the Gold Coast had become Ghana, the first independent democratic nation on the continent.2 In contrast to his previous projects, in which books swiftly followed the conclusion of Strand’s travels, the photos of Ghana remained unpublished until 1976. The resulting volume, Ghana: An African Portrait, included 93 photographs and a text by British-born historian of Africa Basil Davidson (1914 – 2010). …
