Virgin Coconut Oil Ameliorates Arsenic Hepatorenal Toxicity And No-Mediated Inflammation Through Suppression Of Oxidative Stress In Rats, Ademola C. Famurewa, Ekenechukwu K. Maduagwuna, Chinyere Aloke, Sharon O. Azubuike-Osu, Arunaksharan Narayanankutty Jan 2022

Virgin Coconut Oil Ameliorates Arsenic Hepatorenal Toxicity And No-Mediated Inflammation Through Suppression Of Oxidative Stress In Rats, Ademola C. Famurewa, Ekenechukwu K. Maduagwuna, Chinyere Aloke, Sharon O. Azubuike-Osu, Arunaksharan Narayanankutty

The Thai Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences

Background: Compelling evidence has implicated oxidative stress as a leading mechanism for arsenic (As)-induced pathologies. We evaluated antioxidant effect of virgin coconut oil (VCO) against arsenic-induced oxidative stress-mediated hepatorenal damage in rats. Methods: Rats were randomly divided into three groups: Control group, as group, and VCO + As group. VCO was orally administered before and along with arsenic (10 mg/kg body weight, orally) for 21 days. Subsequently, serum liver enzymes, albumin (ALB), creatinine, urea, antioxidant enzymes, malondialdehyde, and nitric oxide (NO) level were evaluated. The histology of the tissues was analyzed with standard procedures. Results: Arsenic caused marked increases in …

Role Of Natural Wetlands In Arsenic Removal From Arsenic-Contaminated Runoff, Vanlop Thathong, Netnapid Tantamsapya, Chatpet Yossapol, Chih-Hsiang Liao, Wanpen Wirojanagud Jan 2019

Role Of Natural Wetlands In Arsenic Removal From Arsenic-Contaminated Runoff, Vanlop Thathong, Netnapid Tantamsapya, Chatpet Yossapol, Chih-Hsiang Liao, Wanpen Wirojanagud

Applied Environmental Research

This research aims to identify the role of natural wetlands in arsenic (As) removal. Phu Lek wetland in Loei Province, Thailand, was selected as the study area. Monthly samples of water (144), plant (360), and sediment (144) were collected from the wetland for 24 months. As concentration in the surface water at the wetland inlet was 0.85±0.26 mg L-1, and 0.02±0.01 mg L-1 at the wetland outlet. It was observed that the As level in water decreased significantly along its flow path, with an As removal efficiency of 98 %. As concentration in the sediment was 89.53-356.22 mg kg-1 at …

Risk Management Of Lead And Arsenic Poisoning In Children Through Public Participation In Communities Near Abandoned Tin Mine, Southern Thailand, Anchalee Pongkaset, Banchong Witthayawirasak May 2018

Risk Management Of Lead And Arsenic Poisoning In Children Through Public Participation In Communities Near Abandoned Tin Mine, Southern Thailand, Anchalee Pongkaset, Banchong Witthayawirasak

Applied Environmental Research

Tamtalu Subdistrict, Bannangsta District in Yala Province, southern Thailand was the site of an abandoned tin mine, and was contaminated by lead and arsenic from the mine tailings. As children are a high risk group from these highly toxic contaminants, this study aimed to identify approaches to reduce children's exposure in the area. The study was conducted through participatory action research (PAR) to empower the community strengthen sustainable risk management. The participants were local public health officials, public health volunteers, parents of local children and local community leaders. The participants were engaged in activities relating to risk communication, training on …

Determination Of Arsenic Intake By Duplicate Diet Portion Sampling Method Among Ronphibun Residents, Piyawat Saipan, Suthep Ruangwises Jul 2009

Determination Of Arsenic Intake By Duplicate Diet Portion Sampling Method Among Ronphibun Residents, Piyawat Saipan, Suthep Ruangwises

Applied Environmental Research

Total daily dietary arsenic intake by adults in Ronphibun district, within Thailand has been re-evaluated via duplicate portion sampling and atomic absorption spectrophotometer determination of the arsenic. Hundred duplicate diet samples were collected from participants. The ranges of arsenic concentration in diets were between 0.49 and 1.33 µg g-1, lower than the Thailand Standard value of 2 µg g-1. The daily intake of total arsenic in the Ronphibun villagers ranged between 130.72 and 550.26 µg d-1 with a mean of 274.97 µg d-1 (SD = 74.78 µg d-1). Daily arsenic intakes of males (mean \inline \pm SD; 297.89 \inline \pm …

Effects Of The Dietary Inclusion Of Fish Meal, Rock Phosphate And Roxarsone On Arsenic Residues In Tissues Of Broilers, Kris Angkanaporn, Kriengsak Daengprom, Chutarat Kiratisehwe Dec 2008

Effects Of The Dietary Inclusion Of Fish Meal, Rock Phosphate And Roxarsone On Arsenic Residues In Tissues Of Broilers, Kris Angkanaporn, Kriengsak Daengprom, Chutarat Kiratisehwe

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The effect of dietary ingredients such as fish meal, rock phosphate and roxarsone on the accumulation of arsenic residues in breast meat, liver and heart was examined in Arbor Acre broilers from days 1-43 of age. Broilers receiving diets containing fish meal had a significantly greater amount of arsenic in breast muscle than other groups. There was a positive correlation between muscular arsenic concentration and dietary fish meal levels. Withdrawal of fish meal for a week prior to slaughter reduced the muscular deposition of arsenic. Chicks receiving roxarsone had significantly higher arsenic level in the liver compared to other groups …
