3rd Place Research Paper: Cultural Attitudes Towards Ethnic Cuisine In Italy, Rachel Berns Apr 2024

3rd Place Research Paper: Cultural Attitudes Towards Ethnic Cuisine In Italy, Rachel Berns

Kevin and Tam Ross Undergraduate Research Prize

Italy has become a common “landing country” for many European and Asian immigrants, creating a perception of invasion that has led to cultural reactionism masked in the reinforcement of “traditional cuisine.” For so-called traditional foods to endure, they must continually be reinvented, bearing different meanings and social values throughout time and space while accumulating rich, cultural baggage that serves as a powerful marker of identity in a given society. This paper explores the role of traditional cuisine in Italian national identity and pride, and the subsequent historical culinary antagonism maintained in widespread attitudes toward ethnic cuisine in Italy. Through an …

Music During Political Unrest: A Look Into Protest Music Of Northern Ireland During The Trouble's, Lauren Blue Nov 2023

Music During Political Unrest: A Look Into Protest Music Of Northern Ireland During The Trouble's, Lauren Blue

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Some of the most influential music and art emerges during civil, social, and political unrest. Music, in particular, is a critical aspect of almost every culture, and protest music is even more influential because it can unify causes. For example, when the Troubles in Northern Ireland gained global attention, many well-known artists released commercially successful songs relating to this phenomenon. Musicians worldwide, including Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Elton John, The Cranberries, and U2, implemented music as a reaction against the social injustice and violence occurring in Northern Ireland. Other songs, like Tina Turner's "Simply the Best," became anthems for the …

The Rape-Revenge Genre In The Digital Age Of Heightened Visibility: The Rise Of Female Storytellers And Fourth-Wave Feminism, Marynell Dethero May 2023

The Rape-Revenge Genre In The Digital Age Of Heightened Visibility: The Rise Of Female Storytellers And Fourth-Wave Feminism, Marynell Dethero

Film and Media Studies (MA) Theses

The rape-revenge cinema genre has continued to evolve since its initial emergence in the 1970s. Many of the most popular films belonging to the genre produced in the 1970s, like Meir Zarchi’s I Spit on Your Grave (1978) or Wes Craven’s directorial debut The Last House on the Left (1972), have been criticized heavily by film critics and scholars for their exploitative tropes. However, I argue that regardless of the production value of the films, the rape-revenge genre is inherently feminist because sexual violence is and always has been an inherent issue to the feminist movement and because the genre …

‘Amore Captus:’ Turning Bedtricks In The Arthurian Canon, Candice Yacono Aug 2020

‘Amore Captus:’ Turning Bedtricks In The Arthurian Canon, Candice Yacono

English (MA) Theses

Over the past 1,400 years, the many retellings of Arthurian legend have served as a lens by which readers have been able to explore issues of power, ethics, and identity. The Arthurian canon has been appropriated by different generations, cultures, and ideological groups over the centuries to subtly (or not so subtly) promote their own priorities. But regardless of the culture and social structure in which a text is composed, one trope continues to be reused across the centuries, despite the stretch of imagination it requires. In the plot device known as the bedtrick, people are duped into having sex …

Volunteer Women: Militarized Femininity In The 1916 Easter Rising, Sasha Conaway May 2019

Volunteer Women: Militarized Femininity In The 1916 Easter Rising, Sasha Conaway

War, Diplomacy, and Society (MA) Theses

Women were an integral part to the Easter Rising, yet until recently, their contributions have been forgotten. Those who have been remembered are often women who bucked conservative Irish society’s notions of femininity and chose to actively participate in combat, which has led to a skewed narrative that favors their contributions over the contributions of other women. Historians and scholars favor these narratives because they are empowering and act as clear foils to the heroic narratives of the male leaders in the Easter Rising. In reality, however, most of the women who joined Cumann na mBan or worked for the …

Women In A Man's War: The Employment Of Female Agents In The Special Operations Executive, 1940-1946, Cameron Carlomagno May 2019

Women In A Man's War: The Employment Of Female Agents In The Special Operations Executive, 1940-1946, Cameron Carlomagno

War, Diplomacy, and Society (MA) Theses

The Special Operations Executive (SOE) was established in 1940 under the directive of Winston Churchill to collaborate with resistance groups, divert enemy military advances and “set Europe ablaze!” As the world’s armies marched across the globe once more, dozens of women found themselves deployed by the SOE to act as agents and combatants behind enemy lines; effectively challenging traditional gender roles in war. While World War II has often been perceived as a man’s war, the direct and violent participation of women in various theaters of the war have been largely overlooked. Rather, women during WWII have been recalled as …

“A Question Of Adapting”: Mediating Return Migrant Identity In Twentieth And Twenty-First Century Ireland, Brittany Walsh Apr 2018

“A Question Of Adapting”: Mediating Return Migrant Identity In Twentieth And Twenty-First Century Ireland, Brittany Walsh

Voces Novae

Immigration became a constant in Irish life following the Great Famine of the 1840s and 1850s, continuing steadily over the course of over 150 years and only stabilizing within the last 60 years. Although in previous eras Irish return migrants faced a great deal of difficulty and criticism upon their homecoming, in recent decades returnees have continued to repatriate - with fewer external obstacles and greater accessibility to home than before. While the internal obstacles of the return migrant persist, adaptation back into Irish life has become easier with frequent return trips, close personal connections at home, and a determination …

What Is And What Was: The Ottoman Empire According To A 19th Century American Diplomat, Alfredo Gonzalez Apr 2018

What Is And What Was: The Ottoman Empire According To A 19th Century American Diplomat, Alfredo Gonzalez

Voces Novae

“What Is and What Was: The Ottoman Empire According to a 19th Century American Diplomat” is an intellectual history of David Porter, a navy officer turned diplomat, during the early years of his post to the Ottoman Empire. This research analyzes Porter’s writings to ascertain what influenced his perceptions of the Ottoman Empire and its people. To a greater extent, this project seeks to understand the construction of “the Other” and whether or not Porter understood the empire as such. Ultimately, this research would argue that the common understanding of how American’s viewed the Middle East at this time was …

Conflicting Definitions Of Relief: Life In Refugee Camps After The San Francisco Earthquake Of 1906, Emily Neis Apr 2018

Conflicting Definitions Of Relief: Life In Refugee Camps After The San Francisco Earthquake Of 1906, Emily Neis

Voces Novae

The 1906 San Francisco earthquake is infamous for decimating the city and leaving a quarter of a million people homeless. Afterwards, the American Red Cross redefined “relief” in its efforts to help San Francisco’s refugees, and it tested its new progressive relief methods within the refugee camps. Previously, the charity organization advocated personal involvement and moral evaluation of disaster victims; relief was viewed as feminine and subjective. After the earthquake, officials sought to make relief more efficient, masculine, and objective through favoring victims who were already self-supporting. Refugees who contested progressive views were derided as socialists. Ultimately, conflicting definitions of …

The Golden Era Of Hollywood: The Making Of The Wizard Of Oz And Gone With The Wind, Kalie Rudolph

Voces Novae

"The Golden Era of Hollywood: The Making of The Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind," argues that despite the glamorous facade of Hollywood, the studio heads where clueless as to what films the public wanted to see. Every film they released was a gamble. In 1939, MGM released two of the most beloved and popular films of all time, The Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind. Gone with the Wind was a huge success, whereas The Wizard of Oz was a box office flop. The paper will discuss how these two films were chosen by the …

Medical Manipulation: Public Health As A Political Tool In The 1918-19 Influenza Epidemic In San Francisco, Kirsten Moore

Voces Novae

The influenza epidemic of 1918-19 devastated populations all over the world, and because no scientist could figure out influenza's pathology at the time, public health officials and local governments could exercise an overwhelming amount of control over their populations. In particular, San Francisco mayor James Rolph, Jr. and San Francisco Board of Health official William Hassler took advantage of the crisis to portray their city as the healthiest, and thus most progressive, in the United States. As part of their effort to illustrate the city's strong commitment to progressive ideals, they used public health measures to incorporate immigrant communities into …

"Ourselves Alone": History, Nationalism, And The Nation, 1842-5, Elizabeth Parker Apr 2018

"Ourselves Alone": History, Nationalism, And The Nation, 1842-5, Elizabeth Parker

Voces Novae

This paper focuses on the origins of modern Irish nationalism in the 19th century newspaper The Nation. Co-editor Thomas Davis ideologically led the paper while reinvisioning Irish history. In the poetry section of The Nation, Davis constructed a new timeline of Ireland supportive of an inclusive modern nationalism. Though his dreams of Irish home-rule failed to be realized, Davis's ideology and poetry had a lasting effect on Irish nationalists.

How White Was The Wash?: Bloody Sunday, 1972, And Memory In The Creation Of The Widgery Report, Sarah Ganderup

Voces Novae

“How White was the Wash?: Bloody Sunday, 1972, and Memory Creation in the Widgery Report” focuses on the memory of Bloody Sunday, 1972, in which British soldiers killed thirteen Catholic Northern Irish civilians during a civil rights march, and the ensuing struggle over memory of that event. Recent scholars have dismissed the official memory of that event, the Widgery Report, as hegemonic, but this article argues that to do so ignore sthe greater complexity of Widgery's task in chairing the tribunal that decided on the report. By focusing on a number of the less-commonly analyzed parts of the Bloody Sunday …

A One Percent Chance: Jabotinsky, Bernadotte, And The Iron Wall Doctrine, Andrew Harman May 2016

A One Percent Chance: Jabotinsky, Bernadotte, And The Iron Wall Doctrine, Andrew Harman

War, Diplomacy, and Society (MA) Theses

This thesis is an examination of the long historical processes that have led to the Israel/Palestine conflict to the contemporary period, focusing mostly on the period before Israeli independence and the 1948 war that created the Jewish state. As Zionism emerged at the turn of the twentieth century to combat the antisemitism of Europe, practical and political facets of the movement sought immigration to Palestine, an area occupied by a large population of Arab natives. The answer to how the Zionists would achieve a Jewish state in that region, largely ignoring the indigenous population, fostered disagreements and a split in …

After Bell scandal broke, many officials asserted that these sorts of startling public payouts were tremendous aberrations, when in reality these scandals have occurred multiple times before. In this white paper Sforza brings attention to municipal corruption scandals throughout the state of California and the lack of attention they recieved when the scandals broke in comparison to Bell's.

North America, Jennifer D. Keene

History Faculty Books and Book Chapters

"These demographic shifts are just one example of how considering North America as an entity during the First World War offers the alluring possibility of breaking away from the strictures of the normal nation-state approach to studying the war, presenting an opportunity to consider the war's regional and global dimensions. Uncovering the full scope of 'North America's War' requires evaluating Britain's dominant position in the global political economy, North America's contribution to the fighting, international relations within North America and how North American-based events and initiatives affected the course of the war and the peace."

Origins And Resolution Of Financial Crises: Lessons From The Current And Northern European Crises, Finn Ostrup, Lars Oxelheim, Clas Wihlborg

Business Faculty Articles and Research

Since July 2007, the world economy has experienced a severe financial crisis that originated in the U.S. housing market. Subsequently, the crisis has spread to financial sectors in European and Asian economies and led to a severe worldwide recession. The existing literature on financial crises rarely distinguishes between factors that create the original strain on the financial sector and factors that explain why these strains lead to system-wide contagion and a possible credit crunch. Most of the literature on financial crises refers to factors that cause an original disruption in the financial system. We argue that a financial crisis with …

Incest And Empire In The Faerie Queene, Kent Lehnhof Jan 2006

Incest And Empire In The Faerie Queene, Kent Lehnhof

English Faculty Articles and Research

"When considered in the context of Elizabeth's effort to silence all discussion of incest, Edmund Spenser's courtly epic aiming to cultivate favor with the monarch looks like a disastrous miscalculation, for incest appears throughout The Faerie Queene. Indeed, incest sits at the center (both literally and figuratively) of the Book of Chastity, the very book wherein Spenser encourages Elizabeth 'in mirrours more then one her selfe to see.' In the present essay, I investigate the apparently illogical and impolitic prominence afforded to incest in book three of The Faerie Queene, ultimately arguing that the imperialist logic underpinning the epic is …

Critical Pedagogy As Organizational Praxis: Challenging The Demise Of Civil Society In A Time Of Permanent War, Peter Mclaren, Nathalia E. Jaramillo

Education Faculty Articles and Research

The writers criticize the U.S. invasion of Iraq and the ensuing military and political occupation of the country. They suggest a link between aggressive U.S. military posture and neoliberal globalization and contend that the current situation in Iraq is a metaphor for globalized capitalism across the world. The writers then consider issues surrounding the politics of organization in the search for a socialist alternative to free market capitalism and discuss how critical educators can reinvigorate the civil societarian left at a time when elites are less accountable to civil society than ever before.
